Prejudice And Racism: A Film Analysis

Many people in today’s world feel threatened by discrimination against races, transgenders, and religions. Racism has been a problem in this country since slavery started. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation and amendments to the Constitution that make discrimination based on race illegal, even modern day Americans find this sort of discrimination acceptable. Recently at the Oscars and in the movie producing world, there has been much unrest. After black people boycotted the Oscars for not including many black people in their nominations, Chris Rock became the host of the Oscars. He made a quite controversial speech, having Asian children come up with suitcases pretending to be accountants. He practiced racism after himself being a victim of racism. Asian actors later object to what Rock said (Feinberg, 2016). Twenty five Asians wrote a letter of complaint to the Academy, stating “In light of criticism over #OscarsSoWhite, we were hopeful that the telecast would provide the Academy a way forward and the chance to present a spectacular example of inclusion and diversity... Students are beginning to hold an “Israeli Apartheid” week, accusing Israel of being discriminatory against Palestinians. This idea has little support in South Africa where people are familiar with the apartheid. Most adult South Africans were alive when South Africa was an apartheid state and recognize that Palestinians have the rights to vote, receive healthcare, and others that blacks in South Africa never had (Israeli Collective, 2015). Furthermore, Ruth R. Wisse, author in the Wall Street Journal writes that “Blaming Israel for the suffering of Palestinian Arabs is first and foremost a strategy of deflection, intended to divert attention from dysfunction in Arab and Muslim societies”
