Racism thrives on an individual’s ability to dehumanize another. Too make them feel as if “you are not anyone, worthless, you are not worth you” (Rankin, 139). The reality is that some view you as not worth the same dignity and respect as everyone else simply by virtue of the color of your skin. That it is acceptable to be forced into the center of attention only to receive micro-aggressions against you simply for existing. That it is acceptable to not be recognized, to be brushed aside, to be perceived as not worthy enough for any form of positive attention. To see the terrible truth of life that one cannot will themselves to escape on their own (Letter to My Son). Collectively, as a society, we must commit to change in order to allow everyone to achieve the so called “American dream”.
The dream that allows individuals to be made to feel most colored when they are thrown against a sharp white background (Rankin, 53). In which many suddenly find themselves in a state of hypervisibility where minorities are subtly or unknowingly degraded. The woman in my story did not know her post she was shared online would be sent in my group chat only to be mocked. This family saw themselves in a safe space in this group chat as I had never heard them say such divisive remarks in public.
