A recent study shows that the United States is home to five percent of the world’s population, but twenty-five percent of the world’s prisoners. That may seem like a lot, but almost half of the prison population is Black men. People may think that this is a sign of racism, which may or may not be true, but where does racism come from? Some people believe that it is “in the blood” while others believe that racism is a learned trait they attained from the parents. I personally believe that racism is a learned behavior. First off, it is a common belief that today racism is something that people are born with, especially Southerners because of the history of slavery in the South. I have always believed that it is not right to single someone out no matter what, but that is because I grew up being told to have an open mind about everything and to be nice to everyone I meet. With my job, I think I have become even more accepting of people from different cultures. I work with and help people from every culture on a daily basis and it is where I have met some of the nicest people. Everyone is always so quick to judge a book by its cover and never take the time to get to a person before they judge them. I just wish everyone would take the time to get to know someone before they judge or single that person out. Some people don’t realize how much they are actually hurting another person with the words they speak. That’s what I personally believe in, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs. In this essay I stated my views on racism and other perceptive views of racism. I have always had a different mindset than most, and I am ok with it. I think that it is good to be able to think for oneself and that is what I did in this essay. Racism is inevitable in today’s world.
