Many people say that racism is a thing of the past, but is it really? Is our society racism free? Is America truly a place of equality? Are all races treated equally? I believe that the answer to these questions is “NO”, because racism is still a prominent issue of today’s society. Yes, we progressed greatly from the past but we still have a long way to go. In order for us to continue working towards equality for all and the end of racism, we must be aware that racism is still alive and continues to affect the world that we live in.
Prior to examining the origins of racism in America, one has to know what racism is. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary the word racism means the “poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race or the belief that some races of people are better than others” (“Racism”). This great nation that we are a part of, America was created upon a foundation of racism in the form of slavery.
Africans were brought into America to serve as a source of free labor. Americans saw Africans as an inferior race because of their color. As mentioned in “The Simultaneous Invention of Slavery and Racism” the connotations for the colors white and black were complete opposites “White and black connoted purity and filthiness, virginity and sin, virtue and baseness, beauty and ugliness, beneficence and evil, God and the Devil” (Jordan Winthrop D.).
