Racism has taken on many forms in America over the past several hundred years. The most substantial or well known is the plight of the African American slaves and the injustices they suffered. Today, a new form of racism is developing; one that has always been around but has now entered the forefront of most Americans minds. This new racism is against members of the Middle Eastern culture and religion. The actions of September 11th did not create a new problem, they just shed light on a problem that we have had for some time. Racism is everywhere in one form or another. To understand it, I think it is necessary to look at the history, causes, and ways to resolve it.

Is it racism or economics which hinders many African American communities from progressing economically in the 21st Century? This research proposal will address this question by examining the social and psychological impact caused by racism and the economic impact it’s had on the African American community. This proposal will further investigate whether the emotional scars of slavery continue to hamper African American progress or if racism is actually the cause.
Throughout history in America there has always been the idea of racism. When Americans think of racism, they usually think of slavery and that racism is no longer a problem in America. However, this is not the case. Racism is still very apparent in America. It is true that since the end of slavery, the U.S. has made great strides towards becoming a less racist country. American History X is clearly a film dealing with racism. The interesting thing about this film is the way in which the subject is treated. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dumming down. Second, the film's figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well-spoken, charismatic and intelligent, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. African-Americans in the South after the Civil War were new to the concept of freedom, yet that very small two syllable word meant a lot to them. Slaves were not considered as a piece of property that could be used and abused by their slaveholders anymore. Slaves families were separated by the effects of slavery, so the freed slaves immediately tried to reunite with their families. News finally reached Texas about slaves being freed on June 19th, 1865, also called Juneteenth. Juneteenth is considered one of the oldest known celebrations that commemorated the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was presidential executive order given by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1963. It changed the Federal legal status of enslaved people in the South from slave to free. This proclamation ordered all ten states to free slaves. This proclamation excluded areas not in the rebellion. The reason these areas were excluded is because the proclamation was issued under the president’s authority to suppress rebellion and it was not passed by Congress as a law. The Southern Confederate supporters were given sixty days to surrender their slaves or they would face confiscation of their land and slaves. This proclamation did not ban slavery or grant citizenship to ex-slaves. It was intended to cripple the Confederacy.
The Emancipation Proclamation declared, based on Abraham’s war powers, that within named states and parts of states in rebellion against the United States ‘“all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free…” ’(..). Unfortunately, the Emancipation proclamation did not stop slavery nor free any slave. As the Civil War continued, it was no longer a fight for the nation’s advancement but now the war had become known as the war for human rights. Abraham Lincoln now concerned that after the war slaves would not be free, decided to formulate a constitutional amendment. The first attempt to pass the amendment failed when the House of Representatives did not reach a 2/3 vote. The amendment was stagnating for two years until finally forwarded to the States on February 1, 1865 and ratified later that year in December. He provided clothing, descent living quarters and food for them. He also challenged and pursued the right to gain emancipation for the slaves he owned. The laws regarding emancipation were designed to prevent and discourage anyone from seeking this freedom for their slaves. Washington eventually found a loophole in the laws that allowed him upon his death to emancipate his slaves and give them their freedom. Washington died the year of 1799. Shortly after in 1806 Virginia repealed the emancipation law.

An approximate of three thousand slaves escaped from their masters in 1781 when the British invaded Virginia (Blumrosen & Blumrosen, 2006). About five thousand and twenty thousand slaves in Georgia and South Carolina, respectively, were freed from bondage as a result of the American Revolution (Clifford, 2005). The Revolution’s natural rights philosophy inspired the freed blacks to request the state legislatures to get rid of slavery and Congress to terminate the slave trade (Waldstreicher, 2004). Many of the freed slaves moved to the North because they believed that living conditions were better in the North than in the South. Unfortunately, they experienced many problems in the North, such as lack of jobs, insufficient food, and lack of housing, which forced many of them to go back to the south to work on the cotton plantations for wages (Clifford, 2005). In the South, the freed slaves were assured of food and housing.
American society likes to believe that race relations in our country are no longer strained. We do not want to hear about the need for affirmative action or about the growing numbers of white supremacist groups. In order to appease our collective conscious, we put aside the disturbing fact that racism is alive and well in the great U.S.A. It hides in the workplace, it subtly shows its ugly face in the media, and it affects the education of minority students nationwide. These people are correct in a sense; loud and public acts of racism are no longer prevalent in the US as they were in the past. However, today racism is stealthy and unspoken, and often deftly covered up with fabricated cover stories to legitimize the discrimination. This new breed of racism is perhaps even more difficult to fight against than its more egregious past self; its subtlety allows its perpetuators to claim ignorance of any discrimination, and its lack of media attention lulls Americans into complacence and acceptance of the current system. Further disturbing is the prevalence of “covert racism”, also commonly called “subconscious racism”. Many white Americans may actively stereotype and discriminate against blacks without even being aware of their actions and thought processes (BlackYouthProject). This phenomenon is a sad consequence of being raised a subtly racist society which perpetuates discrimination, even if never openly. Many subconscious racists may also be unwittingly subscribing to “symbolic racism”. In J.H.
