An example of racism occurred at the beginning of the film when the Arab looking father and daughter attempted to buy a gun. The clerk at the gun shop made a few blatantly racist comments about the customers because he assumes they are Middle Eastern. There were several references to the September 11 attacks. It didn’t matter that the two were Persian, not Arab. Unfortunately, the reoccurring theme post 9/11 is that all Middle Eastern people became potential terrorists. It is amazing that people have the ability to interpret bad events and cast their own prejudices on different ethnic groups to mask their own feelings of anger and frustration.

“Crash” is referring to the general consequences of racism. The term crash indicates that we are bound to have conflicts with each other because we ignore that racism is happening. Often times racism is pushed under the rug unless it results in violence or death among minorities. The acknowledgement of racism and discrimination is getting considerably prevalent due to the fact that there is a blind eye to this issue. The term “crash” is being used when describing racial inequalities because people do not want to acknowledge that racism or discrimination is happening thus people become upset about the ignored situation and express their concerns through violence and protests. For example this accurately describes the race riots among the African American communities, they feel they are being ignored which is causing violent outbreaks. A quote by Rick in the movie Crash stated that “what we need is a picture of me pinning a medal on a black man”. Rick is trying to prove to the Los Angeles community that he is not racially biased and to prove that he wants to show him pinning a medal on a african american. Although he claims that he is not racially biased, he knows that it is still an issue with color. Overall the movie, shows that no matter a person race, religion, ethnicity or gender we ultimately need each other when confronted with the loss of a life.

While the film “Crash” has several complex characters with storylines that all become interconnected in various ways, the movie is predominantly about how prejudice plays into people’s everyday lives and how such prejudice usually has negative implications. The characters in the film all had their own prejudices, or attitudes judging others in negative ways, which set the stage for discrimination, stereotypes, racism, and scapegoats. Thus, one can see how prejudice plays such a pivotal role in people’s relations with each other. As a result, it is best to analyze this film from a symbolic interactionism point of view by analyzing how the labels the characters encounter in this film affect their perception and in turn create prejudice

The degree of connection between all of the characters in the movie is so coincidental and interrelated to emphasize the point that we do not always know what is going on with everyone else we may encounter. It also accentuates the fact that racism is not one particular race against another. Frankie and Derek both grew up in Claredon Heights, a public housing with poor families. Frankie is one of the characters in the book that actually turned into a changed man. Frankie is associated with the Hallway Hangers, a group of white teenagers who reject the values of society. The mindset of hallway hangers is “to make a quick buck.” However, the hallway hangers hold a strong bond with one another. They formed a brotherhood where they have each other’s backs. Frankie was considered the leader of the hallway hangers. Hallway hangers prioritize their life around drugs, violence, and crime. The attitudes towards the hallway hangers is somewhat depressive and negative. However, I do believe that race, class, and family influences had an effect towards the social reproduction of these teenagers.

The conclusion of the Civil War in favor of the north was supposed to mean an end to slavery and equal rights for the former slaves. Although laws and amendments were passed to uphold this assumption, the United States Government fell short. This movie has a very good outlook on racism and on how we should treat others. Another example was a married American couples, their car got stolen by two African American guys. Who felt insulted by the women look and decided to revenge to them by stealing their car. Sometimes people hurting others by looking at them, especially if that person was discriminated before he will experience that feeling most of the time.
