Austin Alan's book The Island at the End of the World explores the effects of two people surrounding a dramatic decrease of radiation in Hawaii. They travel through a rough time when the world is being controlled by a giant green mass. The book revolves around two main characters Leilani and her father, Mike, whose lives are being destroyed trying to get back to their house. Leilani an epileptic is brought to the main island of Hawaii to test a new medicine that will help her to not have seizures. The events following Leilani to not have seizures anymore leads her to a situation that makes her realize having them might be good. While she is there she has to meet with a special doctor that will put her on a new type of pill that will help her to not have seizures. The first night that she is there she encountered a giant green mass in the sky. This mass was called the Emerald Orchard, no one knew what it was or why it was there. The only thing that they knew was that everything stopped working cars, microwaves, televisions, and phones. Before Leilani left for the Main Island she had a very strong relationship with her mom, dad named Mike, brother Kia, and her grandfather. Leilani and her mom didn't spend a lot of time together while they were with each other but they were very close and liked to spend time together. Her little brother named Kia had a close relationship with Leilani and they were never mean to one another like other siblings and they told everything to each other. Leilani and her dad shared the same interests like surfing and they are very brave in tough times that they had to go through. Lastly Leilani and her grandfather share a good relationship because they very nice and concerning about everyone else in the

As the boat trip becomes “over” there is a connection with her father’s passing. Leah says, “We’ve been through a lot eh?” They are starting to heal and become closer to one another.
The story draws attention to the disadvantage that the language barrier caused in the Chapter titled “Take as Directed”. This chapter talks about how the parents don’t follow the doctor’s orders in giving Lia the proper dosing regimen. The staff and doctor’s didn’t know if her parents simply did not want to give her the medicine or if they basically didn’t know or understand what to do. Lia’s suffers a grand mal seizure during this chapter and gets intubated and placed on a ventilator to keep her alive. To make matters worse, the doctors start to believe that the seizures are causing retardation and that if Nao and Foua would give the child the medicine as directed she would be getting better. Finally a decision is made among medical staff that placing Lia under Foster care may be in her best interest in order to assure a proper dosing regimen.
When they pulled up to Mia's house Erik walked her the door and kissed her goodbye. Mia walked into a dark as the house not being able to see anything. They originally believed that when their older daughter slammed the door, Lia Lee’s soul fled from her body. Foua and Nao Kao diagnosed her illness as “the spirt catches you and you fall down”. They also believed that Lia Lee’s seizures made her special because in the Hmong culture, epileptics were often chosen to be important figures such as, tviz neebs or shamans. Her parents were also concerned for her safety, so they brought her to Merced Community Medical Center to be treated. Epilepsy is a medical ailment in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. Epilepsy consists of many levels of severity; there are staring spells on the lower end, and Grand Mal seizures on the higher end. Cheyenne is on the lower end with staring spells, memory loss, and involuntary talking it’s called Partial Onset Seizures; she has the potential that it can have it turn into Grand Mal seizures at any point in her life. On the path to discovering her epilepsy, it changed her and her family’s lives forever.
