My dream has always been to go to college. I want to attend Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska in the fall of 2017. I want to go into Radiological Technician. My interest in this program started when I was a teenager living abroad in the Dominican Republic and I had to get a CT-Scan for an injury. Despite being in discomfort and pain at the time, I remembered asking the technician a lot of questions about the equipment and how it worked and what the images of the scan explained about my injury. The field of radiology technology interacts with all areas of medicine and it not only offers specialization but it offers new challenges and offers numerous learning opportunities to further my knowledge. Radiology technicians play an important role in society and have the ability to make a positive impact on people’s lives. They have the ability to make a difference in a patient’s live by employing their communication and patient care skills. Working as a radiology technician would allow me to fulfill my passion for helping others and making an impact while working in a career that I know I would love. I have been fortunate enough to work alongside many radiology technicians for over 4 years and have come to realize the vital role they play in Healthcare. The fast-paced work environment and major responsibility is something that I am intrigued by. As healthcare professionals, those in the field of radiology work to support sick and injured patients on the road toward diagnosis and recovery. Though many may see radiographers as employees serving a purpose to aid those with a disabling injury, many fail to acknowledge the possibility of radiographers being prone to injury themselves. There are many factors that contribute to the risk of work related injuries, which include heavy physical work, lifting and forceful movements, bending and twisting, sustained poor postures, and repetitive or frequent movement patterns. As a radiographer, job requirements entail repetitive movements involving lifting and positioning patients, some of which fail to cooperate or are unable to follow verbal direction. Also, some patients who are unable to assist in moving and position create added stress to multiple joints and muscles for the technologist. When patients are maneuvered incorrectly, radiographers are prone to physical stress and musculoskeletal disorders in many different areas of the body. Education and training in this field is both crucial and mandatory because of the fact that technology is in flux. The first time my mom bought me blue medical gloves was when I was four years old. I received a new box every month. I wore a new pair of gloves everyday up until I was eight years old. As a child, I would play ‘doctor’ instead of ‘house’ with my older brother, Bryan, because I have always really enjoyed health related games and work. My brother always played the patient and I would “operate” on him; those were the best days. Now, I can actually pick my classes in school, follow my dreams of becoming a doctor, and live how I want to. Despite the fact that there are many careers to choose from, in my opinion, it would be cool to have a career that is hard but fun at the same time!

The true definition of a Radiologic Technologist is the “medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care”. The first couple weeks of school are always the most stressful. They get you thinking about how the semester is going to be and different ways to get you motivated. However, the beginning of this semester is probably one of the most stressful semesters that I have encountered because being a part of the radiography program is a very big achievement. It is a program where I know I will have to be ahead of the game the whole two years, which keeps me on my feet. Throughout this paper I am going to discuss the reasons why I wanted to enter into the program, and the things that I have learned so far along with my short-term and long-term goals.
