Rainforests have been declining rapidly over the last few decades. There are various factors responsible for this decline, resulting in serious impacts on the environment and the economy. Critically discuss the causes of deforestation and solutions to it. Deforestation is the cutting down of a large area of trees and the destruction of forests by people. Forests are what we call an exhaustible resource, one which can be used up if it is not used carefully. Over the last few decades, deforestation has threatened the rainforests with total extinction. To understand why deforestation is such an important issue, you first have to understand why trees matter. Trees improve in many ways the life of all species, including the human race. …show more content…
In his concept, Adam Smith explains that in a free market no regulation of any type would be needed to ensure that the mutually beneficial exchange of goods and services can take place, since the ”invisible hand” would guide market participants to trade in the most mutually beneficial manner. Many private agents, according to these studies, have no interest in maintaining the forest’s beauty and biodiversity, as services provided by forests are benefits that cannot be priced, so are not profit-making.
Another factor precipitating deforestation appears to be poverty. Commonly held views argue that “high discount rates” received by poor countries are a cause of deforestation (The World Bank Forestry Policy 1991, Pearce and Watford 1993.). Because forests imply long gestation; private agents, particularly from the poorest countries, value what they can get immediately from forests more than what they can get in the future. But in 1999, Ekbom and Bojo challenged those views in a World Bank examination by showing that poverty does not necessarily lead to shorter time horizons and an increased rate of environmental degradation. They show how in fact the rural poor have used resources in a conservationist manner over a long period spanning centuries. Ostrom (1990), one of the various analysts they quoted, established a number of conditions that would lead to long term use of common resources despite their short-time
Earth faces many problems. But the worst of them all is rainforest destruction. People are cutting down our trees in our rainforests. We need our rainforests on our Earth. Rainforest destruction is the most serious threat to our Planet!
However, due to more people searching for plots there is greater pressure on the amount of available land. The logging industry is responsible for a relatively small level of deforestation, accounting for 3% in Brazil. Consequently, all these activity contribute together to the rapid loss of what is left of the rainforest and a large proportion of the world’s biodiversity. All of the resources that the rainforest provides could be lost in the next 40 years.
Deforestation is the clearing of a forest and/or cutting down of trees for human benefits such as agriculture, wood exports, etc. Deforestation is the cause of numerous environmental impacts such as habitat loss, flooding and soil erosion. It can also cause climate change, by reducing the amount of rainfall and changing the amount of sunlight reflected from Earth’s surface and increases the risk of forest . Tree growth is important for biodiversity because they absorb carbon dioxide which is a harmful greenhouse gas . However, since deforestation reduces natural carbon sinks, it disrupts the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air causing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air to increase. This poses a serious
The Amazon Rainforest is a mighty jungle filled with an array of exotic species of wood, like mahogany, and rich natural resources such as gold, copper, tin, and nickel. Naturally, people want to make a profit, but the rainforest’s trees stand in the way. Logging is the main source of deforestation. Every year, millions of trees are cut down to be made into timber. Many times, these logging operations are illegal. These operations will keep exploiting the Amazon for its exotic timber, not caring that many of these species of plants are either rare, or help support rare species and ecosystems. Mining also creates deforestation, but not as severely as logging. Trees are cut down to make way for mining operations that dig for non renewable resources like copper and gold. Trees are also used as charcoal to help produce pig iron. A third cause of deforestation is agriculture. Cattle ranches and soy plantations are created where the Amazon Rainforest once stood. As people expand their farms, they must cut down the areas they now use for farming. Trees are also cut to make space for animal pens. Governments also contribute to the deforestation problem by building roads and creating infrastructure. Although these roads help with communication and navigation, they cut through the rainforest, and often help illegal loggers create new roads from their operations in the jungle to these roads that connect with civilization. All of these factors have helped cut down the Amazon Rainforest. In the past
This paper explores the causes, effects and possible solutions of the deforestation of the Amazon Forest. It is important to understand why more than 580,000 square kilometers of Amazon forest has been destroyed in Brazil since 1980 (Rhett Butler 2012). The main topics of this paper, in order to fully explore the issue at hand, will include:
On the other hand, deforestation may be giving thousands of jobs but these people do not know how to operate the forests to their full potential. For example the Amazon, once in pristine condition, is now damaged by many operations
Now it makes sense that in order to get a pack of paper, thousands of trees become an everyday use of humans, and some don’t take into account the hurt its causing mother earth for one sheet of paper. Along with paper plantations, there are also timber and fiber plantations. Mahogany is found throughout the whole rainforest, and as we all know it is also a very, very nice and expensive piece of furniture. But no one seems to consider the fact where the lumber comes from. The same trees brought down and logged are used for its beautiful lumber that today is being used to provide even the fanciest house with very expensive furniture; therefore being a major cause of deforestation for the same claim humans have for such beautiful lumber.
2.4 acres per second- two football fields of rainforest disappear every second (World History 1). Deforestation, or the clearing of trees and plants on a massive scale, has been happening since Portugal first colonized the region known as the Amazon Rainforest, which is in Brazil. As development and population have increased, relief from overpopulation has been found in rainforest land. Currently, use of the land is a result of industrial use, poverty and agricultural plantations. The excessive clearing of rainforest demonstrates the devastating destruction that is possible, from killing animal species to eliminating water
Brazil is a place that is known for noteworthy excellence and incredible natural assorted qualities. Hence, deforestation in the Amazon is particularly alarming. While ecological misfortunes and debasement of the rainforests have yet to achieve the purpose of breakdown, the proceeding with vanishing of wildlands and loss of its species is dampening.
It is a true shame, seeing what third world countries have done to their beautiful forests. But who is one to judge, their ignorance is a result of the lack of education and resources provided to them from more developed countries; countries, who have great education and knowledge of what is being done to this planet. Focusing on Guatemala, only 18 percent of their people enroll into higher education(global education fund). Higher education in Guatemala is equivalent to the first three years of high school in The United States. Is anyone really to blame for deforestation in such a big portion of this country? There is not any one specific thing that has created the destruction of forests. Many factors, and many years have gone into this; for an example, agricultural expansion, natural disasters, and logging. I will be explaining how all these factors lead to one main problem, deforestation; and how we can work on fixing this problem.
Although the cries for deforestation to be stopped may not be heard by those in power, or by companies whose business and profits depend on doing so, many individuals were shown that this is a problem. According to the World Wildlife Fund, its goal is to “… eliminate one of the largest drivers of deforestation… prevent the irresponsible expansion of agricultural operations.” The World Wildlife Fund is also committed to ensuring that businesses, government, and others meet their commitments to help conserve the world forests, and protect the only world we
Deforestation can improve the economies in developing nations and create room for new businesses, roads and railroads. The resources created also provide lumber and paper for other nations, and the land is available for agricultural purposes. These are all reasons why deforestation continues to increase. A New York Times article discovered that Cargill, the world’s largest privately owned company, and Bunge are increasing their share in the destruction of the rainforests in Bolivia and Brazil. These companies and many others have made a drastic choice, choosing profit over the environment. These companies along with many politicians question the importance of the worlds forests, claiming that the economy is more important. The world can only hope they are right. Currently, Tropical Rainforests make up 7 percent of the earth’s dry land and houses 50 percent of all species of animals. The Amazon basin alone contains 20 percent of the world’s fresh water. Astonishingly, these forests are being destroyed at a rate of one football field of land every minute. While millions of acres are destroyed each year. These numbers show the drastic consequences that loom ahead. Tropical rainforests are not sustainable at the rate they are being cut down. Scientists predict that if the rate of destruction stays as it is, all of the earths rainforests will disappear within the next 50 to 100 years. By not conserving
The term "deforestation" refers to the clear-cutting of large sections of primary or original-growth forest, which causes the loss of native species of plant and
The continued deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, and many others like it around the world has been of major concern on the global stage. Concern has increased as climate change has intensified annually, mostly caused by human affluence and manmade pollution as is known in the twenty-first century. Therefore, as mentioned previously, I will analyze deforestation of the amazon rainforest and why it should be reversed via a global effort through the constructive theory lens. I will give a brief background on this deforestation and how it affects climate change, pollution, weather, indigenous communities and the flora and fauna within it.
Deforestation is an increasing global crisis and is mainly caused by human actions. Forests cover approximately 31% of the area on the planet (Deforestation, n.d.). Deforestation is the destruction of a wide area of forest land into a cleared land that is used for a variety of reasons. The impact on the environment from cutting down, burning and damaging forests is very detrimental and there are severe consequences for the environment and future generations due to deforestation. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, approximately 7.3 million hectares of forests are being destroyed per year in the world (Bradford, 2015). In this essay, I will explore the impact that deforestation on the environment and I will
