Raise Minimum Wage Essay

A bill increasing the current minimum wage is greatly needed, and our government officials should demand a raise due to the increase in the cost of living, as it’s no longer realistic. We need higher paying wages for all, middle and lower class income levels. Without some sort of help and support from our government the economy will only get worse. Students will not be able to afford the cost of school and living. Single family households will not be able to support their selves.

Raising minimum wage has been a battle for many decades and it has always been a battle to raise it. Many families that work for a minimum wage job often have trouble making ends meet because making $8.75 just isn’t enough in this today’s economy. Some jobs are paying $2.13 an hour but this is mostly at restaurants that are family owned but if they don’t make enough on tips they must get paid $7.25 per hour they worked. Although minimum wage has changed dramatically since 1938 when it was $0.25 cents (Kurtz&Yellin) American families simply cannot live on minimum wage. Raising minimum wage should be raised to help families that need it the most.

In 2014, Senator Patty Murray and Representative Robert Scott proposed the Raise the Wage Act, which would address the crisis of wage stagnation and income inequality (Economic Policy Institute). In an article by the Economic Policy Insitiute, it explains, what the act would do, and how to achieve it. The Raise the Wage Act would increase federal minimum wage to $12.00 by 2020, by slowing increasing the wage to $8.00 followed by an increase of a dollar a year for 4 years. It would also phase out the subminimum wage for tipped workers, such as waitresses. This act would benefit 35 million workers , and in the long run would increase economical sustainability, pump billions of dollars back into the economy because it would increase consumer spending, and greatly reduce poverty. A wage increase in our country would do a world of good rather than harm. This country is in dire need of a wage increase but just because it needs one doesn’t mean people shouldn’t read in between the lines and how it will be helpful. Several American families are struggling to make ends meet because they work a minimum wage job. Americans often face that fact and wonder how they are going to pay their bills and still have food on the table for themselves and their families. One of the biggest reasons the economy remains sluggish is that real wages have not increased although many businesses enjoy record profits. Productivity gains have been divorced from wages, harming businesses as well as American workers. First of all shouldn’t hard work be rewarded; well, money is the best way you can reward a hard worker. Imagine if all the teenagers went to work after school and instead of asking their parents for money. As far as employment rate, I do believe that it would hurt small business. A small business is normally run by one employee or a few and they might not have the funds to pay several employee. But big company I believe it won’t hurt them, more than likely they have the money to pay their employee and provide medical insurance. But now that they want you to have health insurance, business Polly will cut employee hours to part-time witch will hurt low-income families. But if minimum wages did go up, then this low-income family can afford to provide for their family and health insurance. Also, minimum wage increase has little or no effect on employment as studies from economist across the country (dol.gov). If minimum wages was raise I think the government would spend less taxes dollars for low-income family that have food stamps and other government assisted program, because if these low-income family had a little more money to spend each month, they would not need to have more food stamp every month. This also go with child care, every month some parents are giving a break on how much to pay child care provider, when other family over the poverty line have to pay way more than a low-income family would. Minimum wage is not meant to be a sustainable living wage to live in the United States. In America, minimum wage is meant to be a starting wage for adolescents entering the workforce with little to no experience. This tends to be the case in the American work force today, most minimum wage jobs are going to youth who have little to no experience.The consequences of increasing the minimum wage will have a great impact on the American society. It will result in higher unemployment rates, little to no jobs for future generations as well as less experience, and employers finding more ways to use technology to replace workers.

Workers today working in the lower level jobs are receiving a low wage that will not financially support them. Most people think that if the minimum wage was raised that it would have a huge impact on the unemployment rate in America today but that is not the case. The minimum wage has been a huge topic lately on if it should be raised, stay the same, or if they should raise it gradually. People have different opinions on if it should be raised or not based on many different reasons. Minimum wage should be raised because it will not have a significant impact on unemployment, it would lower the rate of poverty in America, and also it would benefit those working lower level jobs.
