In every group survival story or TV show there is always a character on the show or the book who shows the true character traits of a leader and there is always the antagonist who is the opposite of the leader mainly always looking to control everyone and to have power. In the Lord of the Flies novel the character who is showing the qualities of a leader would be Ralph. The adversary of Ralph would be Jack who shows throughout the novel that he wants to have complete control over the group of boys. What a true leader is, is someone who can have an influence on another group of people for the greater good, or you could say “real leadership is when everyone else feels in charge.” For example an effective leader who that would be living in our society would be Barack Obama. …show more content…
The reason why Ralph represents the leader is because one thing is that he got elected out of the group of boys to be in charge, and another reason being that he wants everybody on the island to survive with him, while Jack is the kind of character who wants to be the boss of the group and wants to be able to control the boys plus he is also the person that shows violence towards others. For example when Ralph is in charge he wanted the group to build huts so that they could have shelter on the island, and an example of Jack being a poor leader is when he went with the other group of hunters and went killing the pigs on the island as if it was a sport just for the killing of the pigs, Jack was even the one who said “Get him it’s the beast!” which was when Simon went into the middle of the group and got killed by all of the boys by accident. Another example of when Jack was very pitiful was when he stole the glasses from Piggy without telling him, so when Piggy went to get his glasses from jack, Roger then rolled down the boulder on to him which then killed
A leader must possess leadership skills, whether good or evil. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph possesses three good leadership skills. Three leadership skills a leader needs to have is responsibility, determination, and initiative.
In the United States’ past, the elected Presidents have been blamed for many catastrophes. This includes hurricanes, the Gulf Oil Spill, the decline of the economy from sending jobs overseas and the greed of Wall Street, home foreclosures, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, on the island, Ralph is in charge of all of the boys. Even though there has been so much chaos since Ralph was voted leader, he is not solely responsible for the chaos that has occurred. The boys themselves are responsible for all the things they have committed.
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is about a group of British boys that were on a plane and they got shot down onto a deserted island. The boys are alone on the island without any adult supervision because the pilot died during the crash. The boys split up into two groups focusing on different aspects, specifically shelter and hunting. During their survival, they face many obstacles such as the beast and the pigs. In the end, they get rescued by a ship passing by.
German journalist John Zenger once stated, “Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths”. When one is forced into a situation where a leader is necessary, a person that displays the fundamental attributes will successfully guide the society. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island represent various aspects of leadership, characterized by differing strengths. However, the protagonist’s, Ralph, leadership undoubtedly triumph over the other boys because his attributes allow him to be a powerful leader on the island. Throughout William Golding’s novel, he clearly depicts Ralph as an effective leader through his desire for the survival of all of the boys, his adamant
First I will talk about my first piece of evidence about how Jack is an effective leader. “He’d never have gotten us meat. He isn't a prefect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing.” (Golding,PDF, 98) This quote shows that Ralph wouldn’t of done anything to hunt for meat for the boys on the island like Jack did. Ralph only worried about keeping the fire alive to have them get rescued, and not about hunting for food to stay alive. Also, you can’t just expect people to do orders when you don’t have anything to give them in return. Jack gave the other boys meat when he gave them orders. By Jack giving the
The existence of mankind on earth relies on various factors. The basic needs for us humans to survive are food, water, shelter etc. These though, are only the physical needs of man. Humans also have social and mental needs. These needs require us humans to have law and order to be able to coexist peacefully with ourselves, nature and the environment. The only way that law and order can be achieved in human society is by a higher authority, or some form of government and/or leader. William Golding tries to touch on some of these aspects of our civilization through the various characters he creates in his novel, Lord of the Flies. Leadership plays a very important role in the novel as it does in real life for us, because the characters need
A true leader is a person who takes initiative and does what is needed to lead a group of people. If they need to, they will make any sacrifices, take the ability to take control and charge of a group. Ralph displays initiative and leadership in the book, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, by leading the innocent group of kids to survival.
Many people consider themselves a good leader, but that is not always the case. In the book, Lord of the Flies, there are two types of “leaders”. Throughout the story, there is a clash between the two types of leaders. Ralph, the original leader, is overthrown by Jack, a savage tyrant. If Ralph was a better leader, Jack may not have taken over. Some traits of a good leader that Ralph lacks are optimism, confidence, and awareness. Ralph would have been a better leader by keeping the boys busy and focused, being open to new ideas, and enforcing his rules.
A leader is someone who has determination. They are willing to do anything to benefit other people in order to help lead them to greatness. When I think of a leader, the people that come to my mind are those who have helped change the world. This includes George Washington, or Martin Luther King. Jr. I definitely do not think about Ralph from Lord of the Flies when I think of a leader. Some people may argue that Ralph kept the group together and knew what was best for the young boys. However, I am aware that Ralph had good ideas. For instance, the signal fire which, in the end, helped the boys get rescued was a good idea. Despite this, Ralph did not do an altogether good job at holding the group together. By the end of the novel, one boy went missing, two of his friends were murdered, and Jack's tribe had almost accomplished their goal of hunting Ralph down and placing his head on a stick.
He's definitely the better leader compared to Jack. Ralph was a great leader that could never really win people over because he wasn't the most fun. Jack won every one over once they realized Ralph wanted to do work. Luckily, after awhile on the island they begin to realize how cruel Jack can be and come to Ralph but Ralph realizes they really need to get off the island or they'll all end up dying there. Once they're finally rescued Ralph steps up and takes responsibility for everything even though Jack caused most of the conflict. Taking all that responsibility on takes a lot of courage and to me, that says good
Ralph’s Failure as a Leader. Leadership is the ability to take action when no one else is capable, giving strict orders that must be followed, and making sure that the group is together and well. In the Lord of the Flies, there is a group of little boys that are stranded on a deserted island that must act quickly or they will all die. In doing so, they pick a leader to assign them different roles so they are able to survive and flourish on the island. However, society tends to sometimes pick role models because of their appearance; charisma is a powerful leadership trait but lacks control and knowledge.
(lead·er /ˈlēdər/ - A person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country.) This is the actual definition of a leader, yet when thinking about a leader this is not what comes to someone’s mind. In today’s society the word leader has been tossed around an astronomical amount of times, and as this happens people begin to develop stereotypical assumptions about someone, or how someone should act. Such as an attractive, skinny, and opinionated male. Someone that stands up for what they believe in. Someone that can relate to the others. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding we have multiple leader figures that show their leadership potential, some more than others. But who was the actual leader?
Even though many supporters suggest that Ralph is a great leader, it is obvious that Jack is the best leader on the island. Since the boys set foot on the island, Jack was honest, and he never hesitated to express his feelings. “Human nature cannot be so irremediably bad if the arrival of one adult can immediately put everything to rights” (Reilly,10). This quote explains that when Jack was introduced on the island he was a great leader, and this made the boys realize they each have individual responsibilities in order to contribute to the group. While being honest, Jack demanded the group to do what he wanted, and the boys would obey him. “Jack at first demands to be called as at school, Merridew, the surname his mark of superior age and authority”(Oldsey 4). This quote illustrates that Jack immediately separated himself from the other boys on the island.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
In Lord of the Flies two boys that have leadership qualities are left on island with many other boys. Ralph is a good and thoughtful leader, while Jack is ruthless and goes into savagery when is not accompanied by an adult. Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding who wrote this book to show what happens when a civilized person and a person of savagery leads a group. Ralph is a nice handsome boy who is elected as a chief of the boys, Jack and his choir become the hunters, and Piggy is a chubby boy who is intelligent. In Lord of the Flies Jack and Ralph are two leaders, at first the boys follow Ralph but then the stop. During the time Ralph is chief him and Jack fight over power until Jack gets his power and Ralph wants
