In the story Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph shows qualities and characteristics of an epic hero. The qualities in the story are bravery, success, and courage. At the end Ralph gets admiration, just like Odysseus in the Odyssey. In this essay I will point out, and explain the qualities that Ralph shows with an Epic Hero.
Ralph shows bravery because he goes an adventure to get the medal. This medal is in Hero’s Duty, and was lost at Sugar Rush. When he goes to Hero’s Duty he was battling the huge bugs just to get the medal. Once he gets it, it is then lost in Sugar Rush. One of the characteristics of being an epic hero is that Ralph has bravery. In the story Ralph displays this, and he takes extreme measures to do so. Just like Odysseus in the Odyssey.
Through word choice , actions, looks and thoughts, the character of of Ralph is introduced , explained developed over the course of the of the text it reveals his attitude. In the novel ralph finds the conch in the lagoon covered in seaweed ,and then learns how to make a sound when he blows in it. Then they start arguing about whos chief and they chose ralph but a few chapters later they argue over who has the right to be chief . The novel then states “"All this I meant to say. Now I've said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say."They quieted, slowly, and at last were seated again. Ralph dropped down and spoke in his ordinary voice.” this piece of evidence shows how ralph is not wanting to step down his role of being chief and that he is a strong character with a strong personality. Also in the book at a time when ralph is lacking the actions of a good chief, he wants to prove he is the chief by wanting to go check for the beast up on the mountain."I'm chief. We've got to make certain that there is no beast. Can't you see the mountain? There's no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?" this evidence shows ralph's personality by, Ralph learning that just saying "I'm chief" isn't enough, you have to have people to enforce your system of laws and order.
Every epic hero acquires certain heroic characteristics. The poem, “Beowulf, is about the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon period. Beowulf is a warrior from Geatland that comes to help Hrothgar, the king of Danes, defeat the monster Grendel who has been killing men in their kingdom. Beowulf defeats the unstoppable beast, Grendel. Then Grendel’s mother comes to try to avenge Grendel’s death, and Beowulf slaughters her in her underwater lair. After 50 peaceful years of ruling the Geats, Beowulf in his old age fights his last battle with a dragon. He defeats the dragon, with help from Wiglaf, but dies as a result. The main character, Beowulf exemplifies many characteristics that an epic hero possesses. Beowulf’s characteristics include
The short story “The Red Convertible” was written by Louise Erdrich. Louise Erdrich was born in 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota and was the oldest of seven children. Her mother, who was a Chippewa Indian, worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her father, who was a German-American, was a teacher of Native American studies in a school that was run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Growing up, Louise’s parents told her many stories of the Indian culture growing up. Her parents encouraged her to write her own stories and her father paid her a nickel for every story she wrote, and even made Louise covers for them. Louise continued to write throughout her childhood and then became one of the first women admitted to Dartmouth College in 1972. She majored in creative writing and English. She also took classes in Native American studies with the chair of the department, Michael Dorris, who she would marry in 1981. After Erdrich earned her masters degree in writing from Johns Hopkins, she collaborated with Dorris on poems and short stories that were inspired by their love for each other and Native American culture. They first published work together shortly after being married and were in need of money, but the quickly written works went on to be award-winning. The couple continued writing short fiction and published novels together. When the couple separated in 1995, Louise moved back to her hometown to focus her work on Native American themes and be with family.
Ralph’s leadership and help he offers to everyone in the group clearly shows his connection to the Hero Archetype. Ralph wanting to be chief and being chosen to be chief by the group, “‘Who wants me?’ Every hand outside the choir...was raised immediately… Ralph counted. ‘I’m chief then.’” (Golding 19). This shows Ralph’s heroism because everyone voted for him to be chief and he wanted to take that leadership role to guide the group. Ralph helped the group build shelters and he built the most, “We all built the first one, four of us the second, and me ‘n’ Simon built the last one…” (Golding 85). This shows how Ralph is a hero because he is doing his fair share of work and more, for the benefit of others. When Ralph stood up to Jack because Jack was going against Ralph and challenging his position as leader. Ralph said to him, “Why do you hate me?” (Golding 129). This shows Ralphs heroism because he chose to show bravery rather than coware like a hero would. When the group was worried about the beast and Ralph was reassuring them and offered to go look for the beast. The group was talking about the beast and Ralph said, “We’ll go and look.” (Golding 133). This shows how Ralph connects to heroism because he made a selfless act that would put his life at risk for the sake of others. When Jack took Piggy’s specs and Ralph tried to help Piggy get them back. Ralph said to Jack, “...You’ve got to give them back.” (Golding 195).
The existence of mankind on earth relies on various factors. The basic needs for us humans to survive are food, water, shelter etc. These though, are only the physical needs of man. Humans also have social and mental needs. These needs require us humans to have law and order to be able to coexist peacefully with ourselves, nature and the environment. The only way that law and order can be achieved in human society is by a higher authority, or some form of government and/or leader. William Golding tries to touch on some of these aspects of our civilization through the various characters he creates in his novel, Lord of the Flies. Leadership plays a very important role in the novel as it does in real life for us, because the characters need
In the movie, Ralph accepts the challenge from Gene the Nicelander and goes on a quest to get a medal. He enters the game Hero’s Duty and takes the medal from their game, but when he does he accidentally brings with him a Cy-Bug (Disney, 2012). Not only does Ralph take on a very difficult task, but he also inadvertently causes a threat to the whole arcade. Just like many epic heroes before him, he doesn’t think through all of his decisions. However this is an essential characteristic to an epic hero, and without it Ralph would not fit the definition.
All throughout the story Ralph shows us heroic qualities like: blowing the conch and having all the boys run to him. It shows that the boys look up to him as their hero to get them off the island. Even at at the end when all the boys chased him down trying to kill them. He still lead them all right to the naval officer. Showing us that he is the true hero of the story. At least Ralph stayed moral that meant he could live with himself without the weight of a person's death on his
Someone who possesses the qualities of an epic hero is a very brave and loyal individual whose excellence deserves to be recognized. In the poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is the king of Ithaka who embarks on his journey home after being away in the Trojan War for ten years. He is a perfect example of one who possesses epic hero qualities. His skills are evident when he tricks a Kyklops by lying about his name, when he continues on his journey after being living lavishly for several years, and also when he remains strong and perseveres after a deadly storm. Odysseus faces many challenges, but manages to overcome them because of his epic hero qualities of strategic intelligence, independence, and courageousness.
Ironman, Spider-man, and Batman are all extraordinary people who are deemed heroes. Everyday heroes like firefighters or police officers, and fictional heroes such as the ones listed before are illustrated as invincible and a moral example for individuals. However, neither of those characteristics apply to an epic hero. An epic hero is flawed, and because an epic hero possess this quality it is the reason why a person would relate more to him and connect with the written work rather than a superhero. An elementary example of an epic hero, is Odysseus the main character in Homer’s The Odyssey because he goes above and beyond the call of bravery and courage of any normal human being to give sanctuary to his men while trying to get home. The Odyssey divulges the journey home Odysseus must make after fighting in the Trojan War; Little does he know that his own hubris will cause this short trip from Troy to Ithaca, to prolong into a twenty year voyage. The characteristics he manifest while facing adversities, his guile, and his tenacious desire to get home to his family is what makes him an epic hero in literature.
An epic story once told from family to family has transformed into modern day movies that many people watch. An example of a movie that is a modern day epic story is Rocky IV. Characteristics of an epic story that are demonstrated in Rocky IV are a character that is highly valued or important to his people, a setting that spans across great amounts of land, and many examples of the hero’s super strength that none of the other characters. In addition to this, the hero has his own characteristics that include great amounts of courage, superhuman strength, and is extremely dedicated to his success that he doesn’t worry about how it could affect his family or people that are important to him. Rocky Balboa is a perfect example of a modern epic hero because of his difficult journey to victory.
How the media portrays those living in poverty initiated many new chapters in scholarly research. Very few, however, address the media’s depiction of the poor during times of disaster (natural or manmade). The issue of poverty is mostly understood through the frames in which the media presents it. As the media continues to use episodic frames (individual causes) over thematic frames that seek to address poverty in its entirety (Iyengar, 1990), the frames deliver largely inaccurate and stereotypical interpretations of those in poverty. Episodic frames often ignore the larger structural factors, such as unemployment, (Kendall, 2011) thus creating a fractured image of poverty and those who live within
Ralph's common sense and ability to recognize what is best for the group also shows his excellent leadership skills. His main focus throughout the book is getting rescued and tells the boys to make a fire and to keep it burning to make a signal. However, the boys do not listen and he becomes angry. "The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep the fire going?" (p. 86) Ralph's determination to get rescued is not only for himself, but for everyone else
How do you define a hero? Some may define a hero with the ability to fly, or run fast; to others a hero may be saving someone who is in dangers; others may define a hero as one who is able to help another in various ways. Harry Potter is a orphan boy who find out he is a wizard and goes to a magic school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While he is at Hogwarts, he develops his supernatural qualities, goes on a journey, and defeats evil. Although Harry Potter is not a Epic hero in the same way as Odysseus, Harry Potter still fulfills the stages of epic hero cycle and proves that he is a hero by overcome obstacles and showing his bravery, and selflessness.
Of the many social issues that plague American society, the issue over the legalization of Marijuana remains as one of the most controversial topics. Marijuana, also known as Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. According to national surveys conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), “marijuana use rose from 4.1 percent to 9.5 percent of the U.S. adult population in the past decade.” The increase of Marijuana use created an ongoing debate over whether it should be federally legalized or not. Supporters of marijuana legalization emphasize the benefit of marijuana as a treatment option for some life-threatening illness and claims that legalizing the drug will boost the economy
The characteristics of an epic hero range from unfathomable strength and courage to simply being a good person. A typical epic hero has super strength, courage, devotion, loyalty, a strong sense of justice, a primary weakness, a love of glory, and they are usually champions of freedom. There have been innumerable changes in the characteristics of an epic hero over time; however, there are a few key traits that will forever stay the same. Beowulf is a prime example of an archetypal epic hero—past and present—because he exudes qualities such as loyalty and honor, courage, and adroitness to risk his life for others and the “greater good” of society.
