The first step is to access the data, which can be found at Sports Reference LLC (2000-2012). Then the data is tabulated columnwise, here into Microsoft Excel but that is not necessary. Double checking against Yahoo! Sports (2012) verifies the data is correct, quickly by counting total number and then by checking that the 150th and 180th scores are the same, which they are. What this checking accomplishes is to reveal "n," the number of entries, which will be necessary describing these results. This also reveals that "n = 179" describes the total possible games for the Rangers this year, a population, rather than a sample from a population, which will makes a difference. The formulae for calculating many statistics are different for samples than populations. Using the wrong one delivers incorrect answers so the difference is material. The second step is to sort the data from lowest to highest, which reveals the highest score was 20. Without sorting, useful patterns could still become apparent but this measurement is interested in central tendency and dispersion so the data are sorted. This also reveals many games where the Rangers scored zero, so an actual entry of zero must be counted along with the other possible scores, rather than left blank and counted as no entry. Now that the data are sorted, one result is the range of the data from 0 to 20, i.e. 21.
