In the novel Kindred, there are many examples of situational irony. Specifically in Chapter 5, when Dana attempts to help Rufus and save him from danger, but then that backfires on her and Rufus begins to threaten her. Dana tries to avoid risk and tries to save Rufus from being his own enemy, but she becomes endangered when Rufus is unsettled by something she stated. On page 118 of Kindred by Octavia Butler, Rufus says “I don't need reminders or threats from you”. This demonstrates the irony of this situation because it depicts how instead of being grateful for being saved, Rufus resorts to his true nature.

The Ransom of Red Chief is a short story published in 1910 by O’Henry. It follows the story of two men, Bill and Sam, who, desperate for money, kidnap the child of a wealthy man to hold for ransom. However the plan quickly begins to unravel when the child proves himself to be an annoying spoiled brat. Because of this the two captors promptly lower the amount they were planning to ask for ransom. The boy’s father however, knowing his child well, demands that the two captors pay him to take the child off of their hands. The kidnappers quickly accept this deal having grown tired of the bratty child. The message that O’Henry is attempting to put across with this story is unclear however it is a quite enjoyable

Literary terms are incredibly vital to short stories. Literary Terms such as symbolism, setting and conflict give the reader a better understanding of the text. In two short stories, “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry and “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury, literary terms are used to develop each of the short stories’ central ideas.
An example of irony would be Siegfried Sassoon's poem, "The Hero" and his real life experience. The poem is about a soldier telling an old woman that her son died while fighting. But then the soldier says to himself that the dead soldier was more of a cold-footed coward, and he did not want to say that to the poor mother. This in itself is ironic, because you see two shades of a character: one where he is portrayed as a hero and the other when he is depicted as a coward. Another ironic detail is that in Fussell's article, we find out that Sassoon himself acted a bit cowardly, when he hid himself during the Battle of Somme. This is the bitter truth. One has a rosy idea about a soldier that they are quintessentially these selfless people who sacrifice their lives for their countries. Again, this ironic interpretation of the war, enhances people's knowledge, and sometimes changes their perspectives.
In society, people endeavor dishonorably, to obtain what they want or need. Some individuals are insidious and commit evil acts. A kidnapper puts effort and determination in his unscrupulous plan to obtain money. The act of attempting to achieve or reach a goal is an example of endeavor. O. Henry’s short story, “The Ransom of Red Chief,” tells about two criminals, a tenacious boy, and a rich man. This thought-provoking story teaches the fact, and that sometimes it is better to give up on an evil denouncing plan.
The life of O. Henry ties in very closely with the narrative The Ransom of Red Chief.
Taking shortcuts to life and not working hard for the things you want can lead out to bad results. This is O. Henry’s theme in the short story “The Ransom of Red Chief.” The story tells about two criminal men who want some money to move to western Illinois so they decided to kidnap a young boy instead of working for the two thousand dollars.
In the story “The Ransom of Red Chief, by O’ Henry,” sympathy should not be felt for the kidnappers. Because they chose to kidnap Johnny and take him back to the cave and let him tell them what to do and then the dumbest mistake in the world was them both going to sleep without him being tied up. Then even after he tried to scalp Bill they still did not tie him up so Bill got a hot potato smashed into his back and then they sent a letter the Johnny's dad and asked for $1500 and instead of him getting the money they wound up having to pay the dad $250 to take his own son back which that is a dad who cares more about money than his own son that is a sorry excuse for a father if their was ever one. Those are just a few reasons that sympathy should
When we don't think things through they usually blow up in our face. In the story, two unexperienced kidnappers capture an energetic child and things don’t go the way they want. The high level comedic short story, “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry, conveys the idea that we should our actions and contemplate the consequences before acting through irony and allusion.
In the “Ransom of Red Chief” I don’t feel sympathy for the kidnappers because they aren't suppose to be kidnapping anyway. They should have known from the beginning when Red Chief threw a brick at them that he was going to be tough to kidnap. They really picked a bad decision on who to kidnap and this was their fault. I don't feel sympathy for them because they didn't really have a great plan. The kidnappers kept Red Chief in a cave to where they could keep him in. The reason they chose to kidnap this kid was because he came from a rich family. They thought they would take the kid then ask for money to give him back in exchange. Once the kid was gone for a while they wrote a letter asking for money from his father to give the kid back. This
The Ransom of Red Chief is a fictional story about the tragic kidnapping of JB. JB was a normal kid in a small mountain town… or so they thought. After these kidnappers take JB for the hope of getting ransom money, they realize he was not at all as easy to deal with as they figured. These men are taken down a road they never wanted to go; being tortured by a little boy. William and Slick started this kidnapping to collect money for their troubles… but you’d never expect what happens to them. This kidnapping completely turns around on them. But in the end, these men were two rotten criminals who deserved the horrible outcome that came to them.
O.henry frequently uses twist endings in his short stories. In his short story, The Ransom of Red Chief, his use of a twist ending becomes clear when, the boy, who calls himself “Red chief”, is kidnapped for ransom and when the kidnappers are thinking they’re going to acquire the money, something unexpected happens. Furthermore, the reader learns that the boy is a handful, and neither kidnappers, nor dad, wants to be near him, so the dad makes a suggestion in his return letter to the kidnappers. In the letter he wrote, “You bring Johnny home and pay me two hundred fifty dollars in cash, and I agree to take him off your hands,”unfortunately for the kidnappers, a while later the dad had two hundred fifty dollars in his hand (98). The kidnappers
