Rape of Lucretia
Above all, Lucretia’s virtues of honor and respect for her husband and family were more important than life itself. Because of Lucretia’s story of life and death in this manner a whole empire was transformed in the way it was governed. Death over dishonor for Lucretia exemplified the ideal Roman virtue of nobility. Lucretia’s suicide created an urgent need to avenge the wrongs done to a virtuous women. Husband, Father, and friend were called upon by Lucretia to essentially extol the Roman virtues of courage, moral authority and dignity in avenging her rape and consequent death. Lucretia’s solution of suicide, in her mind, seems to be a statement of the societal position in the Roman world for women. It’s as though this act was the only way to absolve herself of this crime against her. Death over dishonor seems to be a theme that permeates the Roman culture as a virtue aspired to by both men and women. With the King’s

Interestingly, when Brutus swears to avenge the crimes against Lucretia instead of targeting Sextus he goes straight after Tarquin. Entitlement of the Kings was likely more offensive to Brutus than the rape. Further, based on the status of women in Rome at the time it’s quite possible the people were more enraged at her loss of dignity or reputation than the actual rape. Ultimately many of the Roman people not in the ruling class viewed themselves in similar roles as Lucretia’s Husband, Father, and friend for the purpose avenging the oppressive wrongs done by the Kingdom. These were the Roman people that aspired to the same virtuous principles of courage, moral authority and dignity that Lucretia called upon in her time of need. Principled motivations such as these Roman virtues proved to be a crushing force on the Roman Kingdom while helping to usher in the era of the Roman
The primary source, “The Rape of Lucretia” written in 17 AD by Roman historian named Livy, who authored The History of Rome. The story is a form of propaganda that criticized the Roman monarchy while encouraging the reinstatement of the Roman Republic. The narrative depicts the rape of an honorable woman named Lucretia, who was admired for her humble, modest, hospitable, and dutiful nature. Tragically, she was raped by one of the emperor’s sons, Sextus Tarquinius. After she confides in her husband, father, and family friend Brutus about the Sextus’s crime
Inga Muscio is a very influential writer. Over the years she has earned tremendous credibility within the feminist world. In the chapter, “Rape not Cunt,” from her well known book Cunt, a Declaration of Independence, Inga passionately writes of her feelings about violence against women. She attempts to use rhetoric and captures the reader with a call of action to help prevent further violence against women. However, although Inga Muscio had many valid points about violence against women, her rhetoric does not appeal to all audiences.
A Rape in the Early Republic, edited by Randall L. Hall, is the complete text of the John Deskins Trial which was compiled by Alexander Smyth, a prominent congressman and attorney in the Deskins case. This early in American legal history, rape trials were rare and when they occurred, there was little-to-no documentation of the cases. For example, John Deskins was the only rapist to go to jail in 1806 . This recount is significant to the development of legal history because it addresses gender and sexual misconduct cases in the early republic. During this time, the United States legal system was constantly changing to reflect changes and developments in society, making this case pivotal in legal history. In order to remain true to Smyth’s
The documentary, Rape in the Fields, explores the experiences of women farm workers who are either documented or undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, many of the men that these women work with take advantage of that fact by using it as a threat in order for them to commit sexual assault towards these women. The issues of “unwelcome” and “involuntary” actions, power and powerless, vulnerability, and receiving help for these women are all portrayed within this documentary. As defined in the presentation, “sexual conduct is unwelcomed whenever the person subjected to it considers it unwelcome.”
When Rome was newly established there was a vast disparity between the unmarried women and the men, the women were far outnumbered. Romulus knew that a new city like his couldn’t survive without women to increase the population, and that they quickly need more. After appeals to the neighboring cities with no avail, he decided that if they would not come, he would take them by force. His solution for this is to set a trap for the Sabine women, a festival was announced and people from neighboring cities were invited. Once they arrived, the women were carried off to be married to the men of the city; subsequently the Sabine’s reacted and prepared for war against Rome to retrieve their stolen women. War ensued but eventually the Sabine’s and Rome came to an agreement and later ruled together. This kidnap and rape of the Sabine women falls under the armed actions that Machiavelli finds appropriate for a new king. In order for their people to survive certain measures should be taken, and he believes that the most affective ones are done with force. Also, this action was done with a selfless goal in mind, the advancement of the Roman
A villain against Rome should be unchaste if a woman and dishonourable in a man, these characteristics are quite true of Tamora and Sextus Tarquinius. In Lucrece, Sextus seems at first to uphold the key Roman male attributes. Coming back from war he happily shares tales with his comrade in arms, it isn’t until he begins to plot Lucrece’s rape that his distinct ‘anti-Rome’ personality surfaces. Though he carries himself as a Roman, his inner workings are anything but, “And reverend welcome to her princely guest, / Whose inward ill no outward harm expressed.” (90-91) To Lucrece, his outward manner seems princely, a Roman man with honour whom will respect her as a true man should, it is his innermost turmoil that shows him to be cruel and dishonourable, for while he looks upon her with reverence, he plots his misdeeds within. A Roman man should be forward, righteous in his intent, Sextus is anything but. As with Sextus, another shows such a lack of Roman belief in Titus Andronicus, Tamora is wild and unkempt, proud in her lack of chastity and loud as a Roman woman ought not be. She is wicked and cruel, when found with Aaron by Lavinia in a distinctly unchaste position, she wastes no time in allowing her sons to rape the girl stating “Therefore away with her, / and use her as you will; The worst to
Tamora was begging Titus to not kill her son Alarbus, “ Stay Roman brethren, gracious conqueror, victorious Titus, rue tears I shed, a mother's tears in passion for her son (1.1 104-105). Titus kills Alarbus to hurt Tamora only because she and her sons were Goths and he thought this was some kind of revenge on the Goths after her son was killed Tamora is ready to get revenge on Titus and the Romans. After Saturninus becomes emperor, he tries to force Lavina to be his wife even though she is with Bassianus, “Lavinia will I make my empress”(1.1 242). Lavina is being forced to be his wife even Titus doesn't try to stop it, Lavinia shows him that he doesn't want to be with him so he moves on to the only other woman in the play Tamora.”Behold I choose thee Tamora for my bride”(1.1 325), Tamora agrees to be his wife only because she wants power and she can have if she is the Empress. The men have power over the woman they can not fight back or refuse to do anything, they are taken advantage of, they are hurt and have things taken from them like their own children or like Lavina her husband Bassianus.
Today’s society is full of insane and demented human beings who don’t seem to know right from wrong. A lot of people suffer because of this, especially college students. Simple assault, abduction, and rape are three crimes that have been on the rise throughout college campuses all over the United States. From 2008 to 2012 forcible rape increased by forty-nine percent in four-year colleges. It jumped from 2,370 to 3,621 in a matter of four years (Shapiro). We as individuals have the ability to help keep ourselves safe from these kinds of people. We are provided with a variety of resources and information including forms of personal protection, body strength, and safety in numbers. The problem is we are not utilizing these to the best of our ability. I know we all think that we are invincible and nothing terrible could happen to us, but the reality is, it can.
The accusation of statutory rape can insult both parties involved when the case is of a completely consensual & committed relationship. Since the year 2003 the legality is expected to be easily understood, if one person isn’t giving consent, with the capacity to do so, and the other involved does not think there’s consent, that is an offence. So when two people in a committed relationship are being punished for something that any other normal couple could do without such extreme consequences, is the statutory rape law really just?
Renaissance England has been labeled a culture of shame - a society in which an individual's identity was primarily constructed by the way in which his or her "reputation" or "honor" was perceived by others. A woman's public reputation was always based on her virginity or chastity. Just as women were considered the property of their fathers or husbands, a woman's chastity was an asset owned by and exchanged between the men who possessed her. (Gutierrez, 272) A man's public reputation was therefore determined not only by his own qualities, but also by his wife's reputation for chastity. Conversely, a woman's unchastity was a liability to her husband. Rape and
“Before the rape I felt good. My life was in order. I was getting ready to get married. Afterward everything changed. I kind of lost who I was as a person…

After being raped by the king, Lucretia commits suicide out of devotion for her land and the laws that were implemented (102). Therefore, she understands that in order for justice to be served, she must fulfill her duty to her land by killing herself which will ensure that the king receives his fair punishment. In result, Lucretia’s devotion to her land shows that she believes in honoring her morals. Lucretia knows that she is “innocent of fault,” but she respects the laws of her land and does not want to “provide a precedent for unchaste women to escape what they deserve.” Therefore, Lucretia accepts an unjust punishment in order to demonstrate pietas and show her respect for her husband and
Sexual assault and rape are on-going issues plaguing college campuses all across the nation. In part, I believe this is due to a lack of education on what sexual assault actually is. All too often, victims are leaving these situations feeling confused about something that they will forever deem "a weird night". It often isn't until much later that they realize what happened to them was a violation of their body and of their rights.
Most people think that rape is about sex but it is not. If rape was about getting sex the person would just go and have sex with someone who wants to give it to them. Paying for sex is better than going out and raping someone. Rape is also called sexual assault. Rape is about having power and control over someone. Rape is defined as one person forcing another person, without his or her consent and using violence or threatening violence, to have intercourse or other forms of sexual activity. Usually when people hear about rape they think of a man raping a woman, but rape can happen to anyone. It is one of the worst things that can happen to someone. Some people think that rape is
