Ray Charles was born on September 23 1930 in Albany, Georgia as Ray Charles Robinson. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Greenville, Florida. At the age of six, he started to lose his sight from glaucoma after being traumatized by watching his brother drown in a washtub. When Ray tuned seven, he attended the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind, from 1937 to 1945, where he learned to play the piano, clarinet, and alto saxophone. He also learned how to compose for orchestras and read and write music in Braile. He was soon orphaned when he was fifteen but started to perform in bands around Florida. In 1948 at the age of seventeen, Ray moved to Seattle, Washington, with his $600 in savings. In Seattle, he formed the Maxim trio,
