Reaction Paper #1 In selection “Sick out of Luck, The Uninsured in America” by Susan Starr Sered and Rushika Fernandopulle it discusses the many uninsured people in our society and the extreme measures they go to in order to receive health insurance and also the difficulties of not having health care. In this selection the author’s don’t really have an argument but in the beginning of the selection they talk about the interviews they have had with uninsured Americans and how these interviews demonstrate that working and taking jobs solely for health care is leading to fundamental changes in the nature of society. I honestly think the health care in our society needs to change, I don’t know how this will happen or when it will but it most definitely needs too.
I personally agree one hundred percent with the author’s on this topic of uninsured Americans because in today’s society the average working class honestly can’t rely on their jobs for health coverage. In today’s society healthcare is a privilege not a right like it should be, if you’re broke or have lots of money you are ok but for the average working class Americans it’s a constant struggle to find a good paying job that also covers you for healthcare which is why the nation’s uninsured rate is steadily increasing. According to msnbc.com “In a reflection of the battered economy, the number of people without health insurance rose sharply last year to 50.7 million which is an all-time high according to the Census Bureau”. Another shocking statistic that I found on healthcarefinancenews.com was “Over 20 million of the 46 million Americans without health insurance are working for a living, the biggest reason for the decline in coverage since 1979 has been a fall in employer-provided coverage”. Almost half of the uninsured Americans in our society are actually working for a living and still remain uninsured because a lot of employers aren’t covering their employees. These statistics just
