We all know that 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust, but did you know that a few went into hiding and almost escaped the Nazis? The drama Anne Frank tells us of a group of Jews who hid in a secret annex during World War II. According to the drama, the characters (the franks were joined by the Van Daans and Mr. Dussel shortly after) stayed in the secret annex for over 2 years, which was much longer than what they expected. There were historical events taking place outside of the hiding place, but that doesn’t mean the characters were not affected by them. While many of the historical events took place outside the secret annex, the events affected the mood and actions of the characters hiding in there. The historical events taking place outside of the secret annex affect the characters’ mood. A few months into hiding, the Franks and the Van Daans welcomed a new Jew to join them. It is now when they get a dose of reality about what is going on outside.“Right here in Amsterdam hundreds of Jews disappear . . . They surround a block and search by house. Children come home from school to find their parents gone. Hundreds are being deported . . . people that you and I know . . . the Hallensteins . . . the Wessels . . . ” (Hackett, 130). The impact that this had on the drama was that it changed how the people in the annex handled the situation that they were in. They thought before that they are just trying to stay out of what the Nazis’ views were, but now it is more serious.
