Introduction:
Donepezil is a significant drug marketed under the brand name of Aricept and is manufactured by Eisai and Pfizer. It is approved by United States Food and drug administration and has been marked safe for patients of Alzheimer’s disease treatment as well as treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It considerably slows down the pace of memory loss by accelerating acetylcholine in the brain cells which vanishes the hindrance arising between blood circulations within the brain cells. It has also been approved for the treatment of chronic diseases like Down’s syndrome and Schizophrenia.

Side effects:

Donepezil has certain side effects which patients should have knowledge about. Some common side effects comprise of Diarrhoea, lack of sleep, loss of Appetite, loss of Weight, Fainting, Dizziness, Muscle pain and cramps, Nausea, Vomiting etc. Furthermore, there are certain severe side effects too like problems of rashes, itching, swelled lips, fingers, mouth and tongue. In addition, some people suffer from problem in urinating, slowing of heartbeats and heart burn too.

Dosage:

In the initial 4 to 6 weeks, the Alzheimer’s patient is given a dose of 5mg Donepezil once everyday which one can take in evening or before bedtime as preferred by the patient. When the Alzheimer is mild to moderate the patient is subjected to a dose of 10mg once in a day which is to be continued for three months.
