Reactions to Depression

Prior to having an abortion, I became indecisive on many reasons, so I looked at the pros and cons of the dilemma to better justify my reasoning. I was only seventeen years old in my junior year of high school when I found out I was two months pregnant. The main reasons I concluded to my choice, were because I knew I wanted to go to college, and raising a baby while in school I knew would be a difficult task to handle. My second reasoning was I didn’t want to be portrayed as the typical teenage girl who was pregnant, since majority of the girl’s at my school had gotten inpregnated. I knew I did not want to end up alone either. Even though I had gotten pregnant by my boyfriend, I still underestimated the fact that he would help me through my situation. The last reason was, because I did not want to disappoint my parents. My father mentioned to me a while back that if I ever gotten pregnant, he would kick me out his house. I couldn’t bear pass the thought of what might happen since he suffers from a bipolar disorder. My mom on the other hand, would be even more stressed by the situation, since she already is dealing with enough problems of her own.

One of the most controversial topics in politics is abortion. In class, we talked about the different type of abortions there are and the many different opinions that people may have about them. We also discussed the many reasons why a woman may choose to have an abortion. And surprisingly, what I thought I knew about them was completely wrong. Thus since learning about the reasons why one may get an abortion, I have changed my opinion on the topic and I was curious to find out what my mom’s opinion may be because abortions were not something that we had discussed before. Babies are born and killed every day. Not babies, but unborn fetuses. It’s a sensitive topic for some, more than others. But for me I feel the topic of abortion should be discussed and ideas should be shared with one another. Abortion is a permanent decision to have an unborn fetus, (between 12 and 20 weeks), removed from a woman's womb. There are more pro-life believers than pro-choice. I am one of those few pro-choice believers that laugh at the “anti-abortion” picketers outside Planned Parenthood. Abortion is a woman or teen pregnancy and end up making a choice of giving up on the baby, they go to the doctor and they perform a procedure that is going to kill the baby. People don´t realize how bad and horrible it is killing a baby they don´t know the exact representation of it. When I was only 15 years old, a close friend of mine got pregnant. After spending a few days talking it over with her parents and now ex-boyfriend, she elected to have an abortion. At first I was totally appalled that she had reasoned to kill her newborn child. “How could someone find it so easy to take away another life?” I thought. Now, three years older and more mature me is finally able to process the reasoning behind not keeping the child.

It was only three days after being born that I was flown to my new family in Illinois. If I had not been for a one woman’s unselfish decision, I would not be writing the words on this page right now. Various studies have been conducted to show the psychological effects following an abortion. According to the results some women experience depression and anxiety. These psychological effects reflect on several factors. Abortion may relieve stress by ending an unwanted pregnancy, but the event itself may simultaneously be experienced as a stressor causing anxiety grief, guilt, despair and anger. These factors could lead to depression, as feelings of powerless, anger and self-condemnation are emotions that underlie depression. Controversies exist whether abortion is linked with mental health or not. Future research requires a better understanding of the conditions that lead to unwanted pregnancy and abortion with the ultimate goal of improving women’s lives and well being.

There are religious and emotional objections to abortion as well as the possibility of negative medical and mental consequences. Many are in favor of making abortion illegal because, they feel it is immoral. Others believe that government should not have a say so in such a personal matter. Are there any other factors that could possibly change the way people view abortion? The matter of abortions negatively affecting the women who have the procedure done is one that the world has been dealing with for some time now. Researchers have decided to explore the idea that women who have had an abortion could possibly be at a higher risk for developing and even intensifying mental health issues. Researchers use various measures to determine if or how having an abortion effects woman. Measures include factors such as women who request an abortion but have not yet gone through with it, women who have gone through with the procedure, and women who have lost a child due to abortions or other ways. Studies by pro-choice researchers also conclude that women often have difficulty coping in life after an abortion. One study found that “17% of women felt guilt after the procedure… 56% of women experienced a sense of guilt about having had an abortion and 26% said they mostly regret the abortion.” (Dube 24). Sometimes, women have abortions and then carry such guilt with them that when they do want to become pregnant, they are not capable to because of the psychological stress associated with guilt. “In cases of selective abortion, there is grief for a wanted child, questions about the characteristics of the baby – not usually seen by the parents – worries about future pregnancies, ambivalence about abortion itself, and guilt – terrible guilt” is what Susan Borg and Judith Lasker had written in When Pregnancy Fails (Borg 50).
