Reading Learning Target- We will learn that when researching an argument, it is important to grasp (investigate) all the sides of an argument early in your research.
CONNECTION
Ask students to sit in the meeting area with their research groups. Let them know that today they will begin researching one issue in-depth as a group to prepare for a debate.
"Readers, sit with your research groups today." I pointed to a list of the group members. Students had soon settled themselves in the meeting area with their groups, and I gave each group a basket of resources.
"Readers, all year long I have been getting to know you not just as people but as advocates. I have figured out issues many of you care about-we'll call them hot topics. Here's what

One way readers do this is to focus initially on texts that layout the argument clearly, and then read to learn about both sides."
TEACHING
Set children up to watch you do two demonstrations. In the first demo, start by announcing your opinion and then look only for evidence supporting that opinion. Exaggerate! Ask kids to assess.
"I'm going to do two quick demonstrations of how a reader might start researching an argument. For each demonstration, watch closely, and be prepared to critique. Really be ready to pass judgment."
I picked up the basket of texts labeled "Chocolate Milk in School?," and I made a little drama of glancing overexcitedly at the basket title, making an "I already know this" face, and picking my notebook up right away. "Well, this basket is about whether chocolate milk should be served in school! I already have an opinion about that! Of course we should serve chocolate milk! I'm going to first record my opinion in my notebook: Yes. Schools should serve chocolate milk."
I closed my notebook and turned to the basket, making a show of pulling some texts out. "Let me see. Where are the texts that support my opinion ... 'Raise Your Hand for Chocolate Milk!' That sounds like one I should read first ... then 'Tasty Nutrition' ... yes! I'll read that second. 'Reasons Not to Drink Chocolate Milk'-Wow. I definitely don't plan to read
In the last couple of weeks, I have struggled to find time between classes, studying, work and other things to find time to read a book from start to finish. At this point in my life, I find myself only being able to finish books that are assigned to me. My initial goal was to read three books that, in the past, I came across but never actually found the time to read. I chose the books, Paper Towns by John Green, The Choice by Nicholas Sparks, and Where She Went by Gayle Forman.
Nevertheless chocolate milk should stay in schools because, it is affordable, healthy, and helps reduce stress hormones. There are many families that would be very thankful to know the school is helping them with making sure their child gets proper nutrition and is as happy as possible at all times. Also, families want what is best for their children, and proper nutrition is one thing all children need. The solution is so simple and it can help so many, so please consider leaving chocolate milk in schools around the Troy R3
In this article titled “Analyzing Arguments: Those You Read and Those You Write” goes over multiple strategies and examples to help you analyze the meaning and purpose of a specific argument and how to strengthen your own.
The room, where the meeting occurred, consisted of a business meeting atmosphere, with wooden walls, lack of windows, 12 metal chairs in a circular construction, with an informal dress code. Twelve individuals attended the group – 8 members, 2 family members, the leader of the group, and myself. Of the twelve individuals, seven were males and five were females. The individuals in the group appeared
In presenting an argument, should a writer strive to be the final authority or a reasonable voice on an issue? Review Chapter 22 to understand the difference. Then, using your topic and one or more of your sources, define and provide an example of an arguable claim as opposed to a personal judgment.
It has been shown that if students start at an early age to learn to read and write their learning in all content areas will improve. It is for this reason it is important for secondary teachers to understand early reading acquisition as to incorporate those reading skills in lesson to accommodate students with reading deficiencies. Educators can understand the building blocks of how a student learns and develops into a successful reader in order to help them develop their reading skills. If teachers understand reading acquisition they can better assess their students’ reading level. As such, the role of professional judgement in understanding the selection of reading or writing material is to know their students reading needs and select materials

(Ramage, Bean, & Johnson, 2012). The best way in choosing an argument is finding a topic that can make a good statement or debate. Gathering enough evidence to prove your topic, can have the audience agree with the focus. College students will tend to write on arguments that they are very interested in or something that they can relate too. There two main helpful ideas when choosing evidence and research. First hand research is research that has been established by doing interviews, experiments, surveys, or personal experiences and anecdotes. Second hand research is research from getting other ideas and or information such as books, periodicals, and web sites. All evidence of work must be trustworthy, dependably, and credible resources (The Writing Lab & The Owl at Purdue, 2016). The reason for an argument is to persuade other people or another person, to your point of view (Hult & Huckin, 2016). The 5 key terms of information are specific thing to look upon when creating an argument. Persuade who are undecided to agree with you, reinforce views with those who already agree with you, try and change the minds of those who are in disagreement, what is being written, the writer should have his/her own feeling to the choose looked upon or frowned upon, and finally, a college student whether they are or not, they need to show the ability to work through the
