Hello, I am Eleanor Cameron and I am doing a research paper about the program in our school called Reading Plus. I stand firm on my thesis statement that Reading Plus should be eliminated from our school curriculum due to cost, the added stress and anxiety because not all students have access to the internet, and added exposure to screen time affecting emotional well being. Reading Plus may increase reading levels but, it also increases anxiety. One reason Reading Plus should be removed from our school system is that not all students have access to the internet. Little class time is given for students to finish Reading Plus, so it is up to the student to complete the Reading Plus assignment on their own. It is unfair that some students don’t have the opportunity to work on Reading Plus on their own. Either they don’t have access to the internet or they are unable to stay after or come before school to work on Reading Plus and can easily fall behind with no fault of their own. Imagine if your boss requested you to finish a project at home. Now imagine you don’t have the tools needed to be a successful employer and you fail at it. That would create an unmeasurable amount of anxiety that is out of your control and no fault of your own. …show more content…
Certainly, Reading Plus may slightly increase test scores for some kids but, not all and at what cost? Emotional health and well being of the students should be just as important as improving a standard test score. When demands are high with added pressure of Reading Plus, stress levels are also high and test performance will be low. There should be a good balance between exercies, screen and or computer time. Hailey Middlebrook, CNN reported that screen time not only lessens self esteem but could also become an addiction. Screen exposure for children of
Dana Gioia, author of the article "why Literature Matters", writes about the decline of reading in the U.S. and how it affects our society. The consequences of people not reading are expressed through his specific factual evidence and his prediction of what is going to happen if the American people continue to ignore this issue.
While some people will say that there is not enough evidence to say that reading has or will have a negative effect on our society, it is important that young readers find reading enjoyable and not a chore. Others may say that Carter is too biased to say that a decline in readers is a problem while other may agree because of the evidence that the reports say. Even though there is only one report that he references is clearly say that not reading for pleasure could and will most likely cause problems for our society in the
Reading is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing information which is essential in being a productive member of society. If and when a student missed an opportunity to learn the skills necessary for reading, it’s has a profound impact on their lives. As educators we realize that teaching all children to read requires that every child receive excellent reading instruction. We are also aware that children, who are struggling with reading must receive
The internet is a world wide web connection that unfolds endless possibilities to the users. The internet has many perks including the improvement of children abilities to read. From reading the article, “Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading?” by Motoko Rich, I believe that the internet opens up a wide variety of opportunities to readers around the world and is an essential tool in this generation. The internet does no harm when it comes to getting kids to improve their ability to read. In the article by Rich, Carol Jago states “Nobody has taught a single kid to text message…. Kids are smart. When they want to do something, schools don’t have to get involved” (5). Today’s kids show a wide variety of reading comprehension and proves kids
Actually I learned many things from this class. First of all I learned how to write a thesis statement and the topic sentences. Then I got the idea about the hook sentences. I learned to add the transition sentences so that I could connect every paragraphs which makes the flow in the every paragraph. We also did the assignment of the rhetorical analysis about the advertisement which helped me to analyze the advertisement. In that assignment I learned about the ethos, pathos and logos. I knew how to bring the main idea of the essay into the body paragraphs. I learned to connect the sentences with each other’s. It helped to find my weakness and work on them.
In response to Mitoko Rich, “Literacy Debate – Online, R U Really Reading?” In the 21st century, children are learning via many different sources, whether through textbooks, internet, blogs, etc. Therefore, it was not surprising to read what was mentioned in this article. Reading in the digital age is causing a debate, especially in regards to students. After reading the article, I began to wonder; is it possible that digital text can cause more harm than good? Can digital text take away the value of reading books? And what is happening psychologically to a child when they are using digital text?
All Goniatites have an external shell which is internally divided into gas chambers. This gives buoyancy during the life of the animal.
Children who have developed strong reading skills perform better in school and have a higher self-image. They become lifelong learners. My daughter has done an amazing job overcoming these obstacles by applying herself. She has spent double the time of a child without a learning disability to learn literacy. My daughter learned at a young age if she did not work hard to learn reading and writing she would struggle throughout her life.
Consistent reading remediation in the first three years of school helps children to maintain and/or improve their reading skills.
Over the years while in high school I never understood the big idea of reading, and the significance it has in education. If I could go back in time I would tell

We all know reading is boring, time consuming, and compulsory. All though, most kids would agree with that statement, some may disagree. Some can say that if one does not read they can lose knowledge and become less smart. If you don't read there can be consequences for stopping. Reading is valuable because it gives readers the power to escape, to maximize their potential, and to strengthen their mind.
he most fundamental responsibility of schools is teaching students to read. Indeed, the future success of all students hinges upon their ability to become proficient readers. Recent scientific studies have allowed us to understand more than ever before how literacy develops, why some children have difficulty, and what constitutes best instructional practice. Scientists now estimate that fully 95 percent of all children can be taught to read. Yet, in spite of all our knowledge, statistics reveal an alarming prevalence of struggling and poor readers that is not limited to any one segment of society:
