War has the ability to change many things about the world. While most associate the changes of war with boundaries and governments, people often forgot the influence it has over society and culture. The United States experienced a change similar to this shortly after the Civil war. Citizens were shown the brutality and devastation of war which lead to them having a grim outlook on the world. This viewpoint inspired a new generation of artists and authors who ,with their combined works, created Realism. Writers like Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Abraham Cahan, Ambrose Bierce, and Henry James pushed the drastic shift from feelings to reality in the hopes of appealing to the more literate working class. Many stories, in order to capture reality, relied on similar techniques and themes such as: simplicity, truth, and criticism. One of the most notable techniques of realism was the simplicity of its writing and dialogue. Realism usually followed the adventures and life of the common person, therefore in order to accurately portray the average man authors had to drop the fancy words and grammar of romanticism and pick up the simple dialect of daily life. Twain is best known for his ability to replicate dialogue in this way. He would usually break the rules of grammar and spelling to capture the accents of an area, as seen in his story “ The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Cavalier County”. “H'm so 'tis. Well, what's he good for… Well, I don't see no p'ints about that frog that's any
Twain uses local dialect throughout the story. Dialect enhances the story by painting a picture of the surroundings, giving a deeper understanding of the characters and adding local color. The following quotes show Twain's main purpose is using dialect, which is to emphasize the rural feel of the story's setting. On page 1189 the narrator says "He was always ready and laying for a chance; there couldn't be no solit'ry thing mentioned but that feller'd offer to bet on it, and take ary side you please, as I was just telling you." On page 1190 the narrator says, "Other dogs jest by the j'int of his hind leg and freeze to itnot chaw ." Smiley uses some interesting and somewhat peculiar phrases at the end of the story:
In Mark Twain's Story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, there are plenty of ideas presented that are implausible. Using implausibility played a large role in Twain's humor throughout his writing. This was especially the case in the passage about Jim Smiley's betting frog. He believed the frog was the most talented and intelligent frog to ever be in existence. It was full of exaggerations and the seemingly impossible that made it perfect to be in a tall tale. Twain uses implausibility to create humor in his tall tale by taking a regular story and adding events that cannot actually happen.
An army can only be considered present once its' power, and effectiveness work in tandem to offer a safe environment for its civilians. In "The War Prayer", Mark Twain illustrates an empowered congregation, that is preparing to send off its' young men to war the following day to draw attention to the naïve nature of a war-ready society. Twain's depiction of an excited and proud assembly's lack of awareness lays the foundation for a convincing argument against the glory of war.
Realism best represents the literary movement that America was facing at the time because the texts’ use detail that show how things really happened, how things really sounded, how they really looked, and used this literary style to get the reader more involved to see how the text will make them react while reading instead of just focusing on the narrator and the writer. While reading The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County Twain says “ He never smiled, he never frowned, and he never changed his voice from the gentle-flowing key” (Twain 4). Twain uses these words to show real details that the other movements would never use in their
In the story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, the use of diction provides differences upon the certain class of characters. The text consist of three characters as the narrator looks for someone known as Smiley. He comes across a man by the name of Simon Wheeler and is caught in his story of another man by the name of Smiley which provides a story within a story. As clear of a difference as black and white, the diction of the narrator is more profound and well educated than other characters is this humorous fiction piece. The differences is the use of diction is a bit extreme, providing a possible time era and a separation in educational class.
Using realism (-ing), Twain captivates the reader. The contrast between the slaves and aristocrats, Tom’s economic trouble, and the vernacular of the Dawson’s Landing townspeople display realism. It displays realism because social class contrast, financial issues, and modern language are empathetic topics. One is able to apply the issues in the novel to his own life. However, there is one very prominent message in the book. The moral of the story is to not let social class define who you are. Do not be blinded by the standards others put on you and do not judge others based on their origins. Do not be arrogant like Tom; be humble like Chambers. Life is too short to judge others and to live on a pedestal because sooner or later you will have to learn that we are all equal no matter the
The varying writing techniques of the literary world bring particular elements to stories, giving each their own added meaning. In his story, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” Mark Twain uses two distinct dialects. Contrasting characters, one named Simon Wheeler and the other remaining unnamed, each speaking in their own fashion. By doing this to his characters, Twain ensures that the reader experiences the writing of the realism era in a way that is more than a plot that is merely stated, and not given much value. The characteristics that the story has from dialect usage- these being distinction between two scenarios, theme, and authenticity-are supplemental to the plot’s overall caliber.
Mark Twain’s syntax and diction make a distinct writing style that conveys not at all simple ideas about life and oppression through a young and uneducated boy who speaks mostly in messy and short sentences. The passage above shows Mark Twain’s skill at conveying adventure and childish fun just by vivid imagery- something heavily relied on in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Words and phrases such as: “best fun”, “right down good sociable time”, and the misspelled, “intellectural” in the passage show Twain’s entirely informal diction. Mark Twain also chooses to write with a very life-like syntax, using short sentences and rambling character dialogue.
In the story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” Mark Twain incorporates the use of informal, slang, and uneducated diction. Twain uses this type of diction to describe the character, Jim Smiley; furthermore, it also give the reader a conclusion of when and where the story takes place. This also helps develop a persona of Jim Smiley and gives the reader an insight of the western setting.
This quote from the story reconstructs the perspective on Twain’s diction because of the way using figurative language brings more interest into the story instead of putting things short and simple and using the this diction it’s playing a critical role for the figurative language in the
In the folktale, “Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain is a mid 18th century story of a man traveling to the East for a friend, in search of another. The narrator ran into a man named Simon Wheeler at a bar and the man told him a story of a guy name Jim Smiley. Jim Smiley was a good guy, but he also liked to make bets. Smiley had never lost a bet before and got used to winning, until he stepped up to the wrong person. One thing is to lose fairly and worse is when you lose to cheating. The author included extraordinary amount of figurative language throughout the story, which creates a wild-western setting.
First, Twain’s style can be described as including many different forms of figurative language throughout his stories, including similes, hyperboles, and polysyndeton. According to Chapter 12 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, “Nothing but just a shiny bed of lights …” (Twain). In this quote, the author used a metaphor to compare the sky to a bed, and lights to stars in the sky. Similarly, Twain stated in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” “You never see a frog so modest
In Mark Twain’s, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, Twain is asked to find Leonidas W. Smiley by a friend. Throughout the story, Twain uses diction in order to emphasize a sense of sophistication, and an old timey country accent feel. In paragraph two, Twain narrates, “...dilapidated tavern in the ancient mining camp of Angel’s.” In order to create a sophisticated tone, Twain conveys the tavern in a way that gives the setting a more depressed and rundown impression. The sophisticated tone also helps keep the reader hooked and engrossed within the story, rather than using simple phrases. Paragraph four then begins a newer piece of diction, where wheeler says, “...but anyways, he was the curiosest man about always betting...”
"Authors began to focus their writing on ordinary people and their everyday lives" which caused the shift from Romanticism to Realism to begin. Many American authors were influenced by this movement ("Realism"). Realism inspired these authors to take into a deeper meaning the realties of life by further examining the obstacles and circumstances they have undergone (Marshall). The main ideas of literature shifted from giving people supernatural traits to authors portraying humans as the ordinary person ("Realism"). The major theme of this time period was to preserve the foundations that America’s forefathers laid down for the country. The Civil War was ultimately a second chance for the nation to rebuild and gain back the beneficial aspects that were overlooked in times of change. Realism began around the time of the Civil War and ended in early 1900. The changes in the writing styles shifted America’s views on the works of literature in the time period and caused a drastic change in the country (Leonard). Realists wanted to use the diction of the typical person to be able to connect to them and portray the concreteness of life
Between the end of the civil war in 1865 to about 1910, two styles of literature dominated American literature: realism and naturalism. Realism presents the world as it really is. One of the well known writers of realism, William Dean Howell’s, wrote “realism in nothing more and nothing less than the truthful treatment of material.” Realism in literature tends to be the plain and direct account of whatever is being written about. Writers of realism fill their work with facts to complement the readers’ feelings of the fact that these things can happen in their everyday lives. Realists are sure to write about normal, everyday people, living
