Analyse the interaction between “realist” and “unreal” elements in the text. What role do fantasy, fairytale or gothic aesthetics play?

One might be quick to categorise Jane Eyre as a supernatural novel at first glance and perhaps if they read into it a little more might decide that it is in fact a realist novel. There are many events in the book to be explored however before we can say for sure it is one or the other. These are used to advance the action, to keep the reader engaged and hungry for more and to foreshadow future happenings. To fully grasp Jane Eyre and where it lays on the realist/unreal spectrum these events must be analysed looking at the aesthetics they employ, may that be gothic, fairytale or fantasy, as well as what affect they have on the novel and its characters and most …show more content…

Besides Rochester’s infatuation we see other references to Jane as a supernatural creature. In the Red Room when she passes the looking glass we see her comment on the “strange little figure there gazing at me, with a white face and arms specking the gloom, and glittering eyes of fear moving where all else was still...”. This seems to be a subconscious understanding in young Jane that she is not the same as those around her and indeed as an orphan with no money this is certainly the case. The “Vampyre” Bertha and the “Spirit” Jane are two heads of the same coin and Bronte uses fantasy and fairytale to show this to us. Furthermore this connection could be interpreted as subtle foreshadowing for the emergence of Bertha that may only be caught on a second read. A less subtle form of foreshadowing is seen at the moment Rochester proposes to Jane.
