Recently, people have called out for the U.S. legal voting age to be lowered. If this is to happen the voting age would go down two years, from 18-16 years old. While some say it would help increase the voter participation, others have good reasons to think the opposite. Reasons for not lowering the voting age seem obvious to most people. The legal age at which one becomes an adult in the U.S. is at age eight-teen. Most eight-teen year olds are just graduating from high school, and moving away from home to go to college. They have been prepared for life as an adult, which includes being properly educated on the U.S. Political system and how it works. In the U.S. most six-teen year olds are just getting their drivers license,
The current minimum age for voting, 18 years old, isn't a very good time to start allowing people to vote. When people turn 18, they have plenty of things to worry about. They're (hopefully) moving out of their childhood homes, and they're (probably) going into college. How does that affect their abilities to vote? Well, people are less likely to vote when their lives are disrupted. Eighteen-year-olds have a lot of things
The voting age should be increased to 19 or 21 years of age. Most 18 year olds have just graduated or are still in highschool, so many of them are immature, and lack life experience. In addition, many 18 year olds do not have a plan(s) after high school, so if they can’t make a decision about their future what makes people think that they can make an informed decision about the future of the country. However, there are some states like Ohio that are allowing seventeen year olds to vote in primaries.
In 1971, the voting age was lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. To avoid the confusion that would result from having two voting ages, the states started to enact new laws that enabled 18-year-olds to vote in state and local elections.
I personally don't have much political experience because my parents don't vote. Therefore I don't really care much about voting. If kids aren't exposed to politics or informed on why they should vote then I don't believe decreasing the voting age will make much of a difference. If 18-year-olds do not have a high number of votes I don't see how kids younger than that would make a difference. I don't believe lowering the age is solution to increases voters. I think we should focus more on teaching the importance of voting and why it makes a difference so that when they do turn 18 they will understand why they should vote and by understanding that I believe they will be more likely to
I agree that the voting age should be lowerd to the age of 16.Simply because they do have mature 16 year olds.To me it's like the passage says "There is nothing magical about the age 18." In my opinion ,if they are allowing 16 year olds to complete high early, that shows that they have the brains to know who to vote for obviously. I've seen most 16 year olds in this generation willing to want to vote than the older generation. So I think the age should be lowerd to those 16 year olds whom have completed high school though. If many countries have already done so, then I think this is the one time America should also follow.I think the turnout would be more higher if the age was lowered.Another thing I agree with from the passage is that "Lowering
There are many concerns that might be brought upon if Congress chooses to lower the voting age in the U.S from 18 to 16. Many could assume that 16-year-olds are not competent enough to make mature and informed decisions. They could either choose to not vote or vote the way their parents tell them to vote. There have been past issues with lowering the voting age in America from 21 to 18. Dissatisfaction among many people could cause a huge conflict if lowering the voting age to 16. Although, we must weigh out the pros and cons of lowering the voting age. This will possible affect the voter turnout in a positive way. For those who vote earlier in life can possible develop a habit of voting in the near future. As of right now, we have a low
We should be focusing more on voter participation rather than the percentage of population registered to vote. There are many factors that would increase voter turnout in America, but lowering the voting age is not one of them. In 2012 the U.S. Census Bureau reported that only 38% of voters age 18-24 actually voted.
In my position I agree to lower the age of voting to 16-17 years old because it can raise up the percentage of voting. Many people are not voting because they don't believe it can help them and their community also with the support from 16-17 years old, it can show a huge difference on how the votes are increasing little by little. Also it can gives them experience on what's the voting like. Once they get older, they will know what to do because they registered the vote in an
Peter Tucci’s article recommends raising the voting age to 25 years old so that everyone’s frontal lobes are completely mature and they can exhibit proper judgement. However, specific evidence isn’t provided that states the exact age at which our frontal lobes are fully done growing. This is because everyone matures differently, therefore we cannot set a voting age specific to everyone individually. With that, by the time one is well into their twenties they have already been adult for 7 years. That is 7 years full of major decisions that have effected them and they haven’t had a say in the incumbent. Raising the voting age would be a large waste of time. Attempting to get this change passed would be nearly impossible due to the disagreement in how we should alter the age. On top of that, it would have to go through congress which is a hefty task in itself. For 45 years 18 has been the age at which people can vote, enlist in the armed forces, and are considered adults. Altering the voting age would cause an unnecessary uproar that would not result in any
I think that lowering the age to vote would have a bigger turnout then keeping it at 18. The only thing to disprove this argument is, ( younger voters show a lack of civic responsibility). Athough 16 is a young age to vote , it does not mean they dont have a clear openion on how they want to live. If you think about it, two years later their an adult and now living their life with a presadent that they had no say over.
The legal voting age here in the United States, is 18 years old. It's a considerable time for people to start voting around that time, due to the fact that most 18-year-olds will be out of High School and be entering the real world. The problem with lowering it to, "16 years of age" wouldn't be a wise decision. Due to the fact that High Schools at that age would most likely be entering their Junior Year and would have to focus on their own curriculum. Anothering to note: they wouldn't be mentally ready to have that kind of right. Giving them time to know how politics work and how the real world works, gives them the knoledge to who to vote for and what political party preference they would choose based on the canidate.
The legal age to vote should be maintained and not lowered below age of 18. Our government should not be decided by the immature youth they are not capable of such a important dession that will effect the entire country. People below the legal age of 18 are restricted from doing many things because they are still developing and immature. The voting age should not change to attemp to increase voting numbers.
Many reason why I feel voting should be at a lowering age. I feel like it should be lowered because in other countries people under 18 are eligible to participate in voting. Also lowering the age of voting would have good results becuse the percentage of people voting would increase and America ranks at the bottom. Many countries have a high population of voters because they are allowed to vote at ages under 18. If it is lowered to under 18 people may be able to experience certain laws that require you to be 18 before you turn 18. These are my points on why I think voting should be lowered becuse of America's
Another reason is lowering the age for voting would give more people an oprotunity to vote and have a say in what's happening in their country. By doing this, the percentage of participation could increase drastically. Some may argue that teens as
The first reason is the fact that younger voters don't vote at all. As cited in the passage, "...only 38% of voters in the 18-24 age group voted in 2012," and if we lowered the age to 16, we would actually experience a decrease in voter input. By increasing the number of legal voters, we are also decreasing our chances to increase the percentage of people who do actually vote.
