Due to an ongoing conflict between teachers at the Reynoldsburg City school and the school board, many teachers have decided to strike. When the strikers experienced a lack of support from the board, and even from the community, Emily Dillon, one of the strikers, decided to write an explanation. The primary source that she created was published on educationvotes.nea.org. Her piece is titled ‘“WHY I CHOSE TO STRIKE”: Reynoldsburg, OH, teacher shares her story.’ Throughout this primary source, Emily Dillon, an elementary school teacher and employee of the Reynoldsburg City Schools, goes into a considerable amount of detail about a day in the life of being on strike. In doing so, she explains to readers the main reasons they are striking and expresses her frustrations towards these issues. Dillon makes it very obvious that she does not enjoy striking and in fact misses her job very much, even if some of her arguments about class sizes, are flawed and or poorly written.

There are several things that happened within this story that I believe many children have to deal with. Poverty and food insecurity is something that I saw in this movie that I know my students struggle with. Moving around from place to place is also something that many families face that can be harmful to a student. What I learned in the documentary called “The First Year” is the aspects of each teacher’s way they deal a classroom with students as first-timers. Especially when coming across to many challenges and the struggle they had during their first time ever as educators. Watching what lengths they will go to for the benefit of the students is admirable. The teachers who are into five separate schools in the Los Angeles area are known to be George Acosta who teaches English as a second language, Joy Kraft-Watts teaches high school history, Genevieve Debose teaches middle school language arts and social studies, Maurice Rabb teaches kindergarten, Nate Monley teaches fifth-grade bilingual education, and Andrew Glass teaches elementary special education.

The teacher demonstrated her patience by helping the student with his presentation and not hurrying him or making it seem like she was just ready to get it over with. I also learned that students respond to positive emotions sent their way. Another one of the things that I thought she did that was important was changing her lesson so that the students that were not interacting with other students on their own could feel included. I believe that may be the most important of all the aspects of the emotional regulation she chose to use. I know I will definitely be using her “student artwork” idea throughout my classroom as well as having a calendar to celebrate student birthdays so as to not make any feel left out. Overall I enjoyed this observation because I related to it some with my past and I know if I had a teacher like her in my life, I may have developed differently in a more positive light. I learned quickly that being an effective teacher is an art that takes time and devotion. Many times, teachers are not provided with the necessary materials in order to maintain the various learning styles in a classroom. It is up to the teacher to create an environment where students can succeed. This is a full time job, meaning that a teacher’s work is not done once they leave the school. A teacher must contribute a significant amount of time and effort in order to see positive results in the school and in his or her own classroom. After observing my cooperating teacher’s strategies and learning more about the profession, I knew that I was going in the right direction with my life. I took a significant amount of knowledge away from this experience and have continued to strive to be the type of educator that I was blessed to work with during this experience. .

The twenty-five stories that are contained in the book, My First Year As A Teacher, are about real teachers and their experiences during the first year of teaching. Each story is different. Some are about memorable students while other stories are about some of the hardships that are encountered as a novice teacher. The diverse sampling of stories in this book gives insight of what kind of problems one might encounter as a teacher, yet they also describe how rewarding the profession can be. I found it rather difficult to choose only ten stories as my favorite but after much consideration and rereading I decided on the following stories because in many ways I could relate to the students as well as the teachers that are given life in these stories.

Some negative parts about being a teacher is seeing the children you have bonded with move on in their growth in development. Being a teacher, you will see many kids come and go and she explains it as seeing your own kids move on in life and not being in their life the remainder of their development.

“The Ron Clark Story” is such an inspirational movie in my opinion. I feel that this movie shows what dedication in teaching is all about. It shows that teachers care and have chosen their career in order to make a difference. Ron Clark was an outstanding teacher who was said to be able to raise test scores in any school he taught at. However, instead of choosing a simple, private school that already has high test scores, he chose to teach in an area where students were really struggling. He chose to help those that really needed it. The Ron Clark Story, in my opinion, is all about how much of a difference teachers can really make.

To say that "I am extremely passionate about working with children" would be an enormous understatement in regards to my personal experiences, ideologies and self-proclaimed purposes in respects to working in public schools. Being passionate about ones every day line of work is a huge deciding factor for most of us when it comes to “what we want to be when we grow up.” Conversely, it was quite simple for me, you see the rewards of teaching truly lie in the outcomes of one’s teaching. Knowing that from the first day of school, what I do and how I do it will have a domino effect on hundreds of lives throughout my career as an educator. In hopes to not only work in a field that I both admire and aspire to be a part of, I am also driven to one day be that teacher in which my students can look back and say “Miss. Chadwick really motivated me to be a better learner, artist, writer” and hopefully “a better person.”

I decided to interview a friend of mine who just started her second year of teaching. She works for a Middle School in Westchester County, teaching 6th and 7th grade math. I asked her a series of questions about her whole experience on becoming a teacher. I was relieved to hear what her first few days were like being a new teacher, because that could be nerve racking for any new teacher. She explained to me that she was shocked on her first few days, and overwhelmed with the respect she immediately received from her students. They greet her in the hallway, and thank her as they leave class. I could just imagine how good that would feel to get that reaction from your students. When I asked her why she decided to teach the grade that she is in, she explained to me that she chose to do middle school because it is a crucial time for development in an adolescents life, and also a challenging time.

This past semesters has been an eye opening experience that has changed my views on teacher. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a fourth grade teacher. However after being placed in a second grade classroom my views have changed. I liked the idea of teaching fourth grade because my fourth grade teacher was my inspiration in life. When I was in Ms. Petro’s class I enjoyed being able to watch the students progress over time. Being able to see the drastic improvements in little children is very rewarding and that is why I want to continue to teach lower grades. I have learned that being a teacher requires a special someone, a person who knows that sometimes you will have to deal with tough situations leaving you exhausted and feeling like you are not able to help more. But at the same time, being a teacher allows one to be a visionary for the world and those who surround you.

As children, we absorb information and learn from experiences that mold us into who we are. Many individuals impact a child’s life, but the most powerful and influential role lies in a devoted teacher, a teacher provides growth to students as a gardener would to a garden of flowers. Each child can bloom into a thriving flower so long as you water their garden with optimism, love, patience, and guidance. Throughout my educational experiences I was lucky enough to have educators who poured their knowledge and optimism into me, and now I would like to reciprocate that back to students who are in the position I was once in. Balancing life and school is hard enough for a student, but a powerful and caring teacher can steer you in the right direction. In this autobiography you will read about my educational background, experiences that influenced my decision to become a teacher, and what I believe the role of a teacher should be in a student’s life.

I am attending Concord College to further my education. After graduating with an Elementary Education Degree, I would like to teach in an elementary school in Southern West Virginia. Preferably, I would like to teach in a kindergarten environment. While teaching I plan to further my career with a Master’s degree. I would like to be able to reach those children that aren’t as fortunate as others. As a teacher I will not only teach the children, but they in turn, will teach me. Education is one of the most important aspects to the success of the country. It is important for everyone to feel a part of that success; therefore, I feel strongly about teaching students to succeed.
