The first time I visited Venice, it stole my heart. Recently, I was able to visit for the second time and loved it even more.

Here are a few reasons to visit Venice, the city known as the Queen of the Adriatic:

1. To see the canals, including the Grand Canal and bridges. See both the majestic Grand Canal with famous Rialto Bridge, as well as smaller canals in the more intimate residential neighborhoods, to get a feel for this remarkable city.

2. For the atmosphere of beauty and romance. The architecture and grandeur of Venice is striking, and the city is picturesque at any time of day.

The main sights, including St. Mark’s Square, get crowded during the day. We experienced a calmer Venice in the early morning and evening hours when the cruise ships weren’t in port. We were told that Venice is a city of about 60,000, with millions of visitors each year. Of course, many tourist cities are packed with sightseers, so I just expect crowds.

Another complaint I’ve heard focuses on the lovely canals themselves; the reality is that the water can have an unpleasant smell. My visits have been during late October and mid-June. In both cases, I noticed it a couple of times, but it did not detract from my experience. There are disagreeable smells in other big cities.

On my first visit to Venice about two years ago, I also thought at first that many buildings needed some paint and repairs. The city can look a little rough around the edges. But that could be seen as part of its charm. It is not perfectly polished. It is an ancient city, built improbably on 118 small islands in a lagoon and sieged daily by sea tides.
