Reasons Why College Tuition Should Be Free

If college was free students would have to want to continue their education and get a degree. While free would make college affordable, those receiving the benefit would need to have stipulations for the free classes they are attending. Michael J. Petrilli is the president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Petrilli states, “… just 40 percent of 12th graders are college-ready, even though nearly 70 percent already head straight into college.” He is correct that many high school graduates are not prepared to transition to college. Many don’t have the attention span to sit in longer classes. Students are used not study over a time period, but rather cram the night before the due assignment. Some stipulations would be; you have to finish and get a degree, you have to keep your GPA up, and if you drop out without a good reason you have to pay back the money you used.

Two quick questions: How many of you in this class like free stuff? How many of you in this class wish college was free? That’s what thought almost all of you think that way, I thought that way myself until I realized that doesn’t make sense. Growing up my mother always told me the story of her graduation and I can’t quite remember the year she graduated, but she graduated from Troy State University in Montgomery, Alabama. She always told me about the feeling of receiving that diploma as for her being the first one of her family to have a college diploma. With tears in her eyes she told me “Brock I can’t wait for the day you have that feeling”. So when I think about college tuition becoming free two question pose in my head: 1. Could this be even possible for our government to pay off every 4 year institution? and 2. Why would any high school graduate find going to college appealing if it was free.

I personally don't think that college should be free. Students who pay for their college are more motivated, hard working and independent. Many students would have poor motivation to finish school, because they can always come back. As a matter of fact students with ambitions to get university degree are learning much harder in high school than other, who thinks they don’t need an extra paper. There are many students that are so smart, and they will find the way to get money for school. With extra work and help from family students will be able to afford college tuitions. Students need to depend on themselves; otherwise every taxpayer will have to cover their education expenses. There are several reasons why

Imagine a world where college was completely free. Tuition is completely paid for, no book fees, housing fees, everything is one-hundred percent paid for by the government. Unfortunately, the only downfall to that is that the people fund the government. Taxpayers, which should be almost all of America, are the ones who give the government the money to do every day necessities. The government will not be able to afford to pay for every student to have free college on their own, all of that money will have to come from us, the people. This means that college really isn't free. The government should not pay for everyone's college because it is unfair to those who can easily afford it, taxes will go through the roof, and will inhibit a lesser education if it is free for everyone.

The prospect of attending college can be both exciting and disconcerting, particularly given the current cost of tuition. “Free college programs that cover students' tuition are a step toward addressing issues of the cost of higher education, but leave questions of quality unanswered” (Bayer). Which means free tuition for a student that doesn’t have financial aid assisting them. I believe college should be free within the United States. Although there are states with “free”college or some kind of program to assists students in ; I believe all the states should provide free college for students. This being said, college should be free for students; no matter their race, religion, or sex. They would only be responsible for utilities and whatever else they chose to buy. Tution would essentially be paid by taxpayers within the state. Students can’t afford tuition and expenses due to them not making enough money at their part time job while going to school full-time. Even if a student could afford the tuition they still would not have enough to cover their other expenses.

For several years, legislators have debated the cost of college tuition. Some opinions state that college should be free because education is important to individuals and the economy and the debt after college can be crippling. Differing opinions state that college tuition should not be free due to the devaluation and the valuableness of education. College tuition should not free because of the issues that would later follow the decision and because a college degree does not promise a more successful life than one would have without one.

One of the many problems with making college free is that college, in time, needs to be paid for by someone or something. With the government having the idea that college should be free, these same people wouldn’t be taking the hard payment; You would, through government taxes. As Alex Groves says in his article, “Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a free ride. Every program requires a source of funding, and free education is no different.” (para 5). In the fall of 2017 about 3.6 million students were expected to graduate from high school in the United States. In the same year, 20.4 million adults in the United States were expected to attend an american college or university (NCES fast facts tool). Almost five times the amount of students expected to graduate high school were attending a source of higher education. From these statistics I came to the understanding that there are many people who don’t go to college right after high school or who are going back to college after a break. A big reason behind taking some time between highschool to college or not going at all can be due to the high price for higher education, “For the 2015–16 academic year, the average annual price for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and board was $16,757 at public institutions, $43,065 at private nonprofit institutions” (NCES fast facts tool). For some this may not be difficult to afford, however the national average income for Americans was $43,642.15 in that same year (2016)(Sue Kunkel). Consider a family of five who makes the national average of $48,640, trying to put three kids through college at the same time. It would be difficult to successfully put all three kids through unless they were given scholarships or financial aid. I think that it is misguiding to reward only successful high schoolers with higher education opportunities because then we aren’t making education a priority

All colleges in the United States should be free for college students. Free tuition would be able to benefit students everywhere because they would be able to obtain their degrees and continue to get a sufficient job to support themselves. This advancement would equal to millions of students not having to go their whole lives owing money because of large student loans that is hard to pay back. The United States Government should provide free tuition for all college students.

Free tuition will allow students to concentrate on their studies, instead of their jobs. While going to school a majority of students have part time jobs. These jobs help pay for many things such as car payments, phone payments, and even school. Many students face a daily struggle of not only having to pay bills, but trying to also pay for school. These jobs take time away from the student’s study time If free college tuition was given, students would have more time to educate themselves, plus be well rested instead of being tired from time consuming jobs.(Helena G) Students would be able to focus more on their studies rather than worrying about how to scrape together enough funds for each upcoming school term. As a result, more of them might graduate on time, ready to take on important jobs in their communities. (Drake et al. )

¨Up to twenty percent of the population does not attend college because it is to expensive”(The Huffington Post). This means that there is a percent of the population that does not attend college because it is too expensive. There is two sides to this topic. The first side is that college tuition should not be free because “someone will have to pay for it”(The Huffington Post ). The other side is that college tuition should be free. There are many benefits to if college was free more so than if it costed money. If college tuition was free “students might have more freedom to choose a major they enjoy”(College Raptor Blog). If people choose their major they would be more likely to stay in school. Unlike how student that do not like their major are more likely to dropout of college. The reason being is because it is both expensive, and something they do not enjoy doing. Therefore more people would be doing what they love and not having to worry about paying tuition

The author includes basic facts about college as a way to give background information about how paying for college has changed over the years.

First, free college should be given to students because it will help students concentrate more on their academics. Most college students are full-time students also working part-time jobs in order to pay for the expenses of books and classes that they are required to take. If college tuition was free, students would be more prepared for their classes and not stressing about their financial difficulties. Students that are working part-time

College Education should be free. Initially, my first reason will be about how it manages to help poor students get an education. Furthermore, my second reason will be about how more people would be able to venture onto college. To sum up, my last reason will be that students will have more freedom to choose a major they enjoy. Here is my information to prove this.
