Opening Statement - Julia Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen and Mrs. Chairlady. Today we are debating the resolution - “Reasons school uniforms should be required and worn in all schools”. We, on the affirmative team, strongly support this resolution. And we have three reasons why this should be: 1. Uniforms give students a sense of belonging to a school and create an identity for the school in the community. 2. School uniforms can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically. 3. And a uniform means student doesn’t have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. Point 1 - Toyosi My first point is that uniforms give students a sense of belonging to a school and create an identity for the school in the community. This means that by having students dress the same way, it promotes the idea that they are all part of something bigger than themselves individually. What's often overlooked is that uniforms transform a school, from simply a place that students attend to something they are part of. Uniforms allow students give schools a visible identity, something physical and real which students can look to and be proud of. Uniforms create a ultimate idea of 'us' as opposed to them - them being students from other schools. Even though many students may outwardly hate wearing their uniform, they often take pride in it secretly, especially
First, school uniforms would enhance school pride, unity, and community spirit by making everyone feel like they belong and fit in with their school. Throughout the school, teachers would increase their level of caring, respect, and trust of students. Additionally students would feel important and as if they are a part of a team by wearing a uniform.
First, uniforms help improve students focus on their education. It disciplines students to take their attention away from outward appearance such as clothing and places it on actual school work. Uniforms create guidelines for the student to follow which is an aspect of life that a student needs to learn. A study of a Long Beach school found that their was a 28% drop in suspensions, 51% drop in school fights, and a 34% drop in assaults after the
To begin, school uniforms are economic. Parents have an easier time buying a few sets of uniforms for their children rather than buying a new wardrobe every school year. Students do not have to worry about deciding what to wear every day. Checking their closet and grabbing the uniform is all it takes. For example, back in my sister’s middle school days, she was required to
To begin with, school uniforms promote positive behavior. They cut out bullying over trendy clothes. It can also lower the wall between the more wealthy students and the poorer students. Uniforms will cut out dress code problems by female students wearing inappropriate clothing. Therefore, saving class time for instruction. Uniforms will give a more professional feel to the school, thus creating a more professional student body.
School is a place for education and not looks. This is relevant to my topic because school uniforms help a student focus on education and not how they look in the classroom. Today students need to focus on getting good grades and their attendance before worrying about how they can impress other students. One thing it helps is school work and focus in the classroom. It has led to students having better behavior and improving attendance. Uniforms are also cost effective for parents that can't afford name brand clothes.
Since everyone is similar no one is better than someone else. Uniforms allow everyone to be identical making no one person more superior than their peer. Having everyone dress the same gives people the sense of equality. Seeing everyone dressed the same as you gives you the sense of similarity and allows students to focus on schoolwork. 81% of teachers said that school uniforms have improved the learning environment (Statistics Brain). This uniformity gives students a sense of community, acceptance, and allows them to focus more on higher priorities.
School uniforms is the key to a bigger, better future. The basic clothing procedure phases out many types of harassment and creates a safe learning environment. Uniforms take away harsh borders that separate classmates and create school spirit. The positive impact school uniform have on students is an overlooked opportunity we must be informed about to create the next successful generation.
School uniforms help keep students focused on their School work and not their clothes. With school uniforms students are more concentrated on their work and not their clothes. Students are working on classes rather than trying to fit in.
The idea of uniforms being required for public school students has been a widely controversial topic in the recent past. In the 2003-2004 school year, only one in eight public schools required students to wear uniforms (ProConorg Headlines). In the 2013-2014 school year, one in five public schools required students to wear uniforms (ProConorg Headlines). This essay will discuss the reasons that uniforms restrict the individuality of students, burdens families that cannot afford two sets of clothes for each of their children (Farrell), and serve little to none purpose in benefitting the education of students. Uniforms are meant for the workforce, not school children.
School uniforms are also beneficial in preventing visual distraction amongst the student body within the classroom, because with an effective school uniform policy there are much less dress code violations from both genders that can be seen as provocative attire. .
There are several reasons public schools should require uniforms. “School uniforms are one of several strategies being used by this nation’s public schools to restore order in the classroom and safety in the schools” (Stanley, 2). “In addition to encouraging students to concentrate on learning, rather than on what to wear, uniforms can be social equalizers that promote peer acceptances, as well as school spirit and school pride” (Stanley, 2).
Thirdly, uniforms enforce discipline towards learning and enhance education. Students have to wear a particular set of clothes throughout their high school careers. This results in building up of self-discipline for each student, which is beneficial to the long-term process of learning. For example, students’ attention is not diverted towards the latest designs and hence, can spend more time concentrating on academic goals. Uniforms improve a person’s attitude towards success too. Students generally act the way they are dressed and with fewer distractions, they are able to focus on their goals and obtain better results. Hence, uniforms result in better learning at high schools for students through the development of self-discipline and positive point of view towards success.
School uniforms create school pride. When people in the same school, look similar, they feel more together. According to French Toast, a website that sells school uniforms, “Helping to build a sense of community within the school, uniforms create an atmosphere of belonging” (Benefits of School Uniforms n.d.). This shows that uniforms create unity in the school and people feel that they belong. No student will feel left out just because of their clothes. When students feel the bond between them and school, the passion can push them to work harder. According to French Toast, “This essence of unity can positively affect a child's attitude toward school and can lead to better learning and improved attendance” (Benefits of School Uniforms n.d.). This means that school uniforms can make a child more passionate about going to school, which can improve a child’s grades. They will also be more eager to do their work and succeed. School uniforms can unite students, and they can do better.
Schools, parents and students have debated over school uniforms since the past decade. School uniforms can make the school better in many ways. It can improve graduation and attendance rates. Lessen gang violence and economic differences between the students. School uniforms can even improve students discipline and behavior for the better. It can also show a great sense of school spirit.
Uniform encourages students to have a sense of belonging and of being part of a community. Every morning students wear their uniform, it evokes them to think of their school
