Atomic Bomb Essay
On December 7, 1941, the United States was unexpectedly attacked by Japan, now known as the Attack on Pearl Harbor. In retaliation to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, U.S President Harry S. Truman ordered the use of atomic weapons on Japan to help fight the war. In my opinion, the decision to drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified.
One reason that the decision to drop the atomic bombs was justified is because the United States wanted to seek revenge against Japan and to end the war in a quick, easy way. In a 1945 radio report, Truman stated that, “We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor… We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and …show more content…

The document “Major Problems in American Foreign Policy” states that, “Another argument which could be quoted in favor of using atomic bombs as soon as they are available is that so much taxpayers’ money has been invested in those projects that the Congress and the American public will require a return for their money.” This means that the United States had already invested in so much money, that they can’t back out of the project. In addition, the United States had just come out of the Great Depression and the American people would hate to see their taxpayers money be wasted and not used.
With this said, I think that dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified because of three reasons. The first reason is that the United States was seeking revenge on Japan after their attack on Pearl Harbor. The second reason is the fact that the use of the of the atomic bombs saved American lives that might otherwise have died in the invasions. Lastly, the United States had already invested so much in the project that they couldn’t back out of
