Mary Haydock, now formally known as Mary Reibey was born on the 12th May 1777 (source 1) and was raised by her grandmother after both her parents died when Mary was of a young age. Mary was convicted of horse stealing at the age of 13 and was to be sent to Australia for seven years (source 1). Being sent away from her family and in particular her grandmother, meant that Mary was alone and isolated from the people that she would have felt most comfortable around. This lack of belongingness may have caused Mary Reibey depression which was common for convicts of such a young age.

Rebecca Felton was born Rebecca Ann Latimer on June 10, 1835 to plantation owners Eleanor and Charles Latimer. Her parents quickly recognized the intelligence in their first born and began to hire tutors when she was merely five years old. She would go on to attend school at a private school located in a Presbyterian Church, and then on to college at Madison Female College. Upon her 1852 graduation, she earned three distinct honors in that she was one of few women to receive a classical liberal arts education, she maintained the highest grades, and was the youngest member of her class at only seventeen. She would marry the speaker from her college graduation ceremony, Dr. William H. Felton, in October of 1853.
And for the other half of the assignment, in this part I choose contemporary photographer Sheila Pree Bright. The reason I selected Sheila Pree Bright is largely her work, which not only was amazing but also portraying wide ranges of contemporary society and its flaws. Moreover, she seems to found a way to show what Generation Y’s view on society look like as if it were a documentary kind of like the photos of Dorothea Lange. Therefore, the next paragraph I will talk about, her works and what are my thoughts on them.
Although some say the best art stems from heavy emotions such as pain or strong dedication to a religion, Rebecca’s story sprang up from a loving family and relatively easy life. She was born an only child on September 19, 1972 to poet and author Floyd Skloot
Marier worked for about forty years as a nanny, pursuing photography during her spare time.
Alex Kotlowitz met Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers in 1985 while working as a journalist. He was interviewing them for a photo essay in Chicago magazine on children living in poverty. The violence that occurred every day where the brothers lived in Governor Henry Horner Homes, or Horner, disturbed Kotlowitz. Lafeyette and Pharoah are 12 and 9 years old at the start of the book but have experienced more than many kids their age. The boys did not seem sure of what life held for them. Lafeyette told Kotlowitz, “If I grow up, I’d like to be a bus driver,” Lafeyette was not sure that he would grow up at just 10 years old (x). Kotlowitz wanted to show what it is like for children growing up in urban poverty after seeing the brothers’

For everyday pictures, you can mix things up by telling a story with your photography. Instead of snapping pictures as they happen with no influence on the shots, this style of photography involves planning and executing your vision. The storytelling is completely up to you.
For my second extra credit, I watched a documentary on the life and work on Dorothea Lange, someone who, opposite Ansel Adams, intended her work to be documentary and send a message.
The 1930’s were filled an enormous sense of vulnerability and angst because of the horrifying events of the Great Depression and its impact that it had on the society and economy of the United States of America. People of all classes, races, genders, and heritages were struck by the tragedies of the Great Depression. However, with new advancements in the technology of photography came a new hope and outlook for the future of Americans. The introduction of colored photography along with organized photographic groups and their impact took the World by storm as the realization of normal citizens being impacted by the Great Depression set in.
Another significant photography movement that definitely reveals its image and an artistic moment is Straight Photography. It is a style of art that “aims for excellence in photographic techniques independent of painting” (Martin and Jacobus 286); in other words, it concentrates on the reality of the world instead of using the realistic painting techniques as Pictorialists did. That means Straight Photography is a reaction that extremely against Pictorialism ideas; however, it still needs the subject matter as well. Also, the process of Straight Photography “[strives] to encourage photographers to experiment with the limits of the camera and developing the process to create abstract and unique photographs instead of manipulating the image
My MYP project topic is Photography. I am researching photography because it is a subject that really interests me and that I enjoy. Photography falls under the global context of Personal and Cultural Expression because it is a form of art and a way for people to express their creativity. Throughout this MYP journey I hope to become a better photographer and explore more of Washington D.C. Some questions i’m trying to answer for this project are, What are some restaurants in D.C that are highly favored? What are some cool places I should visit in D.C? How can I become a better photographer?
Annotated Bibliography New technological advancements have allowed for an expansion in the art community, specifically photography. Art has been one of the fundamental aspects of human life since the prehistoric ages. It is a way to express oneself and share creativity with large groups of people. As humans have become more and more intelligent, new technologies have been invented. As technology continues to increase, the possibilities of art also escalate.
One of the editors of a German periodical encouraged Gyula to learn photography himself, instead he decided to select photographs, and often hire photographers. He worked with two female photographers as of 1926. One of the photographers was Ergy Landau and the other is speculated to have been either Germaine Krull or Rogi Andre, who would later marry André Kertesz. Kertesz is largely credited with teaching and inspiring Gyula to photograph by night, writing, “It was looking at his photographs and hearing him talk about them that helped me discover how much this mindless and soulless piece of machinery, this technical phenomenon, had enriched the means of expression at a man’s disposal. That was the end of my prejudices. Photography had me in its grasp. (Aubenas 98)” However Gyula never clearly explains where he learned photography or from whom.
