Growing up is a hard thing especially in the teenagers period, you don’t know how you shall act in the start, and when you become older you think too much about the way you act. The thing growing up is an important part of the short story “Red from Green”.
The narrator in this story is a third person narrator, and the narrators focus is on the protagonist in the short story Sam. The narrator’s role is to observe. Since it’s an observing narrator it’s hard to get the whole picture of the relationship between Sam and her father.

But the relationship is still a bit complicated, because they didn’t spoke to each other. After the episode when Layton tried to have sex with Sam, her father and hers relationship become worse, because Sam think her father should have protected her.
The short story “Red From Green” made by Maile Meloy takes place in the summertime in July, on a river, in the state Montana, this is the same place they take to every year. Near the river is their some mountains and it’s here Sam and Layton is shooting. They are sleeping in tents and sleeping bags in the nature.
In this short story there are some symbols. The title on the short story could be a symbol of the evolution Sam had in the short story, when she goes from a teenager to a real woman. This is like then the apple ripens, here it also starts as green and here is the apple unripe, and then it’s ripe it become red. Another symbol in the short story is the last float trip with her father. This symbolize that her childhood is near the end, and she soon is a woman. Sam’s teeth is also a symbol, the teeth symbolize that everything is perfect on the outside, but inside she is in despair, example when she shall chooses, to go to the boarding school or
The use of symbolism in short stories enhances the meaning behind the literal meaning that the plot poses. It connects the reader towards visually connecting symbols to particular concepts in the story. In the story, “The Paring Knife” by Michael Oppenheimer, introduces us to two characters whom are lovers yet through the finding of a paring knife under their refrigerator, a past unfortunate event in their relationship begins to unfold. Symbolism is present all through the story, as even the title suggests at first that the paring knife will be symbolic to understand the meaning of the story. Symbolism is prevalent in “The Paring Knife”, to contribute to the overall significance of the short story.
Sam was a responsible kid that helped his mom in ways she really can not do for herself.
So I am going to introduce about some interesting symbols that I found in the book to write about. First of all, George and Lennie's dream farm. This imaginary farm is basically what pushes the whole story line since the whole story is about George and Lennie working while achieving their dream which is
Bertino shows how Sam is induced into fantasizing her relationship with her father and clearly fools herself into thinking her father fulfills the role of a man in her life. Throughout the story, Sam constantly talks to her father, after he insults her as if nothing occurred previously. It is obvious that she desperately wants to have a father-daughter relationship at the beginning while her house is on fire she imagines the following "Two of the angels are a man and his daughter who float by in a car with a shiny hood ornament. He is hunched forward in a gentleman's suit, and she is in a cotton candy coat. His hand reaches behind him to say, in one smooth gesture, do not worry. When we get home, our house will not have a fire in it." (Bertino 1). Here it clearly shows the type of relationship Sam wishes to sustain with her father, and by it being a figment of her imagination one can infer how deep inside she's been longing for this to be a reality. Sam's fantasies express her repressed emotions along with her thoughts resulting in her inability to cope with the reality of the monster standing right in front of her. Bertino does this to make the reader sense a bit of what Sam has carried with her throughout her whole life.

Sam didn’t even need to think about it. Of course his father knew about every single detail that went on in his life. He didn’t even need to tell him himself. Every now and then when his divorced mother would phone his father to demand a couple thousands off him, she would blab Sam’s business.
Samsa and his father no longer have a connection towards one another due to the transformation, and his inability to work causes a more disconnect. Samsa’s father dislikes the idea of having to become a messenger for the family, because of Samsa’s transformation. Samsa knew “From the first day of his new life that his father considered only the strictest treatment called for in dealing with him” (Kafka 36). Out of
The child discussed her relationship with her parents. She indicated that there are times when she became very upset with her mother and father.
Her domestic landscape shapes her. Her connection to her mother makes her a kinder and appreciative person while her disconnectedness to her father makes her rebellious but also more resilient. The tone towards her mum is much more positive and warm while towards her dad it is colder. This shows the difference that the level of connectedness can make on an individual’s identity. I will compare her story to her cousins, whose father being the older brother of the dad grew up the same way. His story is however different, he perceives the disconnectedness as a threat, whereas the girl perceives is a thing that just happens. Even though living with a similar father figure, the ways that two grow up is different. She is more optimistic and laidback while the cousin becomes more timid and afraid of other people. The way she writes about is quite incoherent, writing anything that pops into her head, symbolising the disconnectedness she has with her father. However when she talks about her mothers its smoother and connected. The way she thinks and talk about her father shows the rebellious streak she has developed.
