Redemption In The Kite Runner

As is true in society, individuals must often struggle between two choices, which is also shown through literature. This is especially true in Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, in which the main protagonist, Amir, is torn between making the morally correct choice and making the selfish choice. After choosing a selfish route in his childhood, Amir is haunted by regret until he receives the chance to repent for his sins. Through Amir’s internal conflicts, Hosseini reveals the theme of redemption throughout the novel, as well as in society. As a young child, Amir blamed himself for his mother’s death during his birth, striving to win his father’s acceptance. The guilt became unbearable for a child of his age, so he then proceeded to eliminate the source of guilt from his life. Amir accused Hassan of stealing his watch, which prompted Hassan and his father to leave, feeling wrongfully accused and betrayed by the ones closest to them. Assuming that his troubles would pass, Amir carried on with his life, and when war struck, he and his father fled Afghanistan and headed to America. In America, the two created new lives, until an old friend of Amir’s father, Rahim Khan, called upon Amir. Still consumed by his bottled up guilt from years ago, and looking for redemption, Amir headed back to his home, Afghanistan, in hopes of saving Hassan’s son from the same man who had raped his father. In the scene where Amir confronts Assef, a Taliban soldier now, he attacks him for hurting Hassan, and for hurting his son Sohrab. Although Amir had not been able to save Hassan from an assault, he took on the responsibility of Sohrab by adopting him. By committing this good deed, Amir was able to repent for his betrayal towards Hassan. Amir began as a child, selfish for his father’s love, but he found that his father’s affection came with a price -- his morality.
