Reflection About Myth

What is myth? At first I associated the word myth with more of the definition of a legend or sagas, as analogous to history with the characters of the stories being heroic in the sense of mere mortals experiencing the wondrous powers and abilities of those “out of this world” people, such as gods and actual heroes or divine people. I didn’t believe that myths were created from actual historical events or were the origins of those historical events, including the etiology of everything and how this caused that; but yet I believed it was more of a fictional story compromised to highlight on theoretical reasonings on how something came into being. Myth was characterized in my head as being passed along through history like a fairy tale or folktale, verbally as oral history. Similar to this reasoning, I imagine myths being used as fictional stories to teach a lesson or warn children about something they may encounter in their life because the word “myth” in the Greek language translates to the word “story” and when used in different situations, the word story can have the connotation of something fictional with fairytale-like characteristics before the idea of a historical event pops into your head. On top of being used to teach a lesson or warn, I believed myths were also ways for one to answer a big question that in reality doesn’t have a definite meaning to or yet has a scientifical meaning that some are unwilling to accept.
