1. Volunteering was a requirement to graduate high school, but in my senior year, I had the opportunity to take part in our ‘internship’ program. We would fill out three careers we were thinking about and if someone in the community was looking for help, a student would be sent to that job to volunteer during ‘class time’. I had been battling with what I wanted to major in ever since my father had an accident in 2011, and thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to finally decide. I wrote down something medical, and it was probably one of the more common requests and I was accepted onto the Orthopedic Floor at UFHealth. My typical day consisted of doing some cleaning, offering patients snacks, restocking gloves and basic medical equipment.
It is still so surreal to reflect back on my first semester as an incoming college student in the ENC1101 course, analyzing at my progression as a reader and writer in literacy. Since the first day of class I set in stone my goals for this class: receive a 4.0 GPA, develop my connecting theories skills in writing, and become more aware of objectives for each Unit throughout the course. All of these goals became achievements that not only make others proud but most importantly give me self pride. In order to earn the grades and achieve these goals, I went after every opportunity that I was given as an incoming college student, such as office hours and extra credit. By taking this course I have gained confidence with the utilization of literacy, and made an addition to my group of impactful literacy sponsors. Once students are finished with high school they assume that there is nothing else to learn beyond the stereotypical five paragraph essay, but they are so wrong. I was able to obtain so much knowledge about numerous course concepts from Writing about Writing, articles, and my professor. These concepts will carry on with me throughout a bright future of writing courses, job interviews, and any other skills that require literacy. The four outcomes listed below will help illuminate how I improved as a writer, by being a driven college student and going out of the way to earn my achievements in this course. In the first outcome I improved comprehending scholar texts,
I have also operated as part of a team, for example AUQA audits, scholarship allocations, and large IT projects. Having spent most of my career working in schools and faculties I am well versed in dealing with students, general and academic staff and central units. These include timetabling, graduation, prizes and scholarships, and student and academic administration. I have also provided support to academic staff as required, for example in invigilating assessment items (including online assessment), developing course and subject proposals, reviewing Turn It In reports for potential plagiarism, and enabling advanced Blackboard
The one idea that drew me to a liberal arts college was the ability to take a wide breadth of classes from all disciplines. I hope to receive not just facts and memorization out of my education, but applications to other subjects and even daily activities. A prominent example of this is my potential major, physics. To prepare for an eventual career in the scientific field, this semester I am pursuing research in physical oceanography. Also, I joined the physics club in order to extend my learning outside the classroom, in addition to using this club as an opportunity to seek out like-minded individuals who also share a passion for science.
In the summer of 2015 I received a full scholarship to attend Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison University, an opportunity that shaped a simply hobby into an enduring passion. As a writer, I am highly critical of my work, however being accepted to the eight-day program merely by my own literary merit definitely served as an example that not only am I capable of writing something worthy, but that I have the power to achieve any goals laid before me. While I attended the program I greeted 35 peers from California all the way to Zimbabwe, South Africa. My core classes consisted of Fiction and Poetry, where I was taught by award winning authors and poets. To be honest, I felt entirely inadequate the first few days. Here I was
During my junior year at Pace University, I volunteered at the New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell, in hopes of gaining more experience in a health care setting. I felt as though my former experience volunteering at Northern Metropolitan helped shape me to have an appropriate understanding of what it meant to assist patients. For a little over a year, I volunteered in the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit. Every Saturday, l dedicated four hours per week to visiting patients
Incoming Freshmen reflecting on my first semester, some things that you might want to think about when coming into the High School. Teachers are one of the main concerns that I had when coming into the High School. Some people are nervous about oh are these good teachers or are these bad teachers. I do have to say there is a very wide variety of teachers here that have different standards. Also the schedule I advise that you try and memorize it as quick as you can. Once you memorize your schedule you are able to navigate the hallways much easier to navigate. It really helps when you want to get from point A to point B without getting a tardy. If your nervous about the work your going to be given wether its harder or if you given a lot more
I received an acceptance from a US MD school during the 2013-2014 cycle. However, as an international student, I was required to deposit all four years’ worth of tuition in an escrow account prior to matriculation, which I was unable to do. While I was aware of the escrow requirement prior to application, I was on track to obtain permanent residency during the application year per my immigration attorney, which would excuse me from this requirement. However, given the uncertain nature of the residency process, this did not, and is yet to, happen. My family and I had recently immigrated from India, and coming up with the escrow amount was impossible at that time. Loans were also only available on a yearly cadence, not for all four years at once.
My interest in writing wasn’t always apparent to me even though I sought out activities that included the skill. I enjoyed English classes growing up, but I never thought I would utilize writing at a heightened capacity for different disciplines and my own creative pursuits. Soon enough, writing became an activity that I did outside of the classroom, especially in public health pursuits during my time in college and creatively post-graduation. It is a part of my constant development as a person who contributes to causes and activities that I care about and a part of the impact I believe I can make in the medical field.
My decision on a major field of study at Western Michigan University was a process that took much thought and reflection. With my high school teachers’ strong leadership, they inspired me to possibly pursue anything as a career. The long process of finding out what I want to do with my life started in the summer when I was trying to figure out what career would best suit me for the future. Im that kind of person where I need entertainment in my life, so I narrowed it down to some jobs I can't do, such as being a business major and sitting in a office my whole life, and accounting, because I despise math. During my thinking process, I utilized what subjects I enjoyed in high school that I’d like to learn more about in college. I came to a

My love for helping others prompted me to explore volunteer opportunities presented by my advisors at my undergraduate college. I provided first aid care at numerous marathons, and Special Olympics events in the central Ohio area. I quickly discovered that through the
I was first inspired in obtaining a career in communications disorders during my second year of college. I enrolled at the University of California, Riverside under the neuroscience major, unaware that it was not the path for me. I did not feel passionate about majoring in neuroscience, so I declared myself undecided. Soon enough, a friend of mine introduced me to the major of ‘Communication Disorders’ and influenced me into taking an introductory course; after some arrangements, I was enrolled. While enrolled in the introductory class, I became further aware of the prevalence and incidence of individuals with speech, language and swallow disorders in the country. As I researched the different options that the discipline of Communication Disorders
Throughout the entirety of my high school career, I have always gravitated towards math and sciences. I enjoyed them predominately due to my proficiency in the subjects, as opposed to a natural interest in the studies. During my senior year, I began to enjoy reading more so than my previous years. I had read all of the Harry Potter books as a small child, but that was the extent of my literary background up until that year. That year, I watched the show Game of Thrones on HBO for the first time. I watched all seasons that were out at the time, and when I wanted more I decided to delve into the books. This opened up my horizons to the world of literature. I began reading more and more, gravitating towards authors like Stephen King and Harlan
For my Senior Seminar Project I explored religion through photojournalism. I did this by attending a Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, Unitarian Universalist, Mormon, and Jewish Service. During the service I would take pictures of my experience but if I was told I was not allowed to take pictures inside in order to respect people's privacy, I would only take them outside. I photographed things that I felt captured the religion as a whole and embodied my time there. While completing my project I have learned various things about all of the six religions. The religions I valued learning most about was Mormonism because it is the religion I was the most unfamiliar with. I have learned the importance of doubt and questioning through looking at the
I have learned various things during my academic career that have been extremely useful in my non-academic career. I honestly feel that I have grown in many different areas especially in my oral communication and media technology. During the summer I volunteered as a Volunteer Youth Coordinator at Northern Illinois Food Bank. I completed various tasks and projects that included, organizing programs and event, creating flyers and advertisements, internal blogging, data tracking, and conducting orientations. I was lucky to be able to do such a good job that they offered me an internship during this current school year as a Volunteer Engagement Intern. This would have not been possible if I did not push myself in school and learn all those different key skills. I am very thankful that I can say I have come a long way from where I was years ago.
