Reflection In English 101

The toilsome component this semester was transitioning from being a high school level writer to a college-level writer. However, English 10 has by far been my best experience in writing. By taking this course I have retrieved many helpful elements, that will help me become a successful writer throughout college. In high school, essays often gave me stress and anxiety, however, when taking English 10, I was able to learn to enjoy the process of writing purposefully and mindfully. Even though, I have taken advanced placement English courses in high school and have taken a practice run of college level English over the summer with Professor Brenda Venezia, I was still able to retrieve a lot more from this course. During the fall semester of 2015, I was enrolled in an English 101 Composition class. At first, I did not think much of the course. I have never had a passion for English classes. I thought it would be a fairly boring class that I would end up loathing. However, I no longer feel the same way toward the course. I learned to like that class. The professor was brilliant. Professor Grefski taught everything with such as ease. It almost became comforting to hear her explain the assignments or lessons. I felt as though I could understand the class better with her teaching. I really learned a lot in the course. The badges themselves were a great help to my college career. I thought I knew how to do all those things before the class, but I now realize

The most appreciated accomplishments in life; come from struggle. As a teenager, I failed to complete college. My failure was not a lack of intellect; rather it was a lack of discipline and commitment. A decade and a half later, I have grown to appreciate the value of putting in effort. Southern New Hampshire University’s English Composition course is my first attempt at redemptive accomplishment.

High school was a major transition when it came to my literary skills. I took the most challenging english courses throughout each year of my high school career. During my sophomore year a new program was introduced, AP Capstone Academy. The introduction of this program allowed our high school to finally be recognized as a magnet school in our county. There were two classes that must be taken to continue enrollment in this program, they were AP Seminar and AP Research. Though I found it a drag to add on a writing class on top of my english class I was not looking forward to it my sophomore year, but little did I know how much it would help prepare me for academic writing in the future. During the last semester of my senior year of high school, I enrolled in Tupelo High School's Advanced Placement Dual Credit English IV course. Ultimately, my time in Advanced English provided me with many challenges, but also helped me recognize high points as well as my strengths. These experiences helped mold me into the writer I am today.

Attending my first day of class I was a little unsure about how valuable it would be. I questioned whether it would be a wasted course. Upon meeting my professor Mr. Wilbert I knew I had interest in this class. I have taken many English classes but never with someone as passionate or as talented as Wilbert. I decided I was going to put my best foot forward and in turn become a better writer.

The beginning of the semester my writing was weak. When I got assignments for grammar, punctuation, and sentence style I was satisfactory when I turned them in. When I write my essays and turned them in they were satisfactory. Then the second eight week started then I knew I had to advance my grammar, punctuation and sentence style. I can now reflect back to the beginning and see how much I have advance in my writing. I notice that my strengths are vocabulary and the structure of my essays, and my only weakness is my grammar that I need to work on a lot.

Wow, today is my last class, and I can’t believe I have made it; eight weeks has gone by with a blink of an eye, and English class 099-800 was my most challenging. This was my first semester of college in almost thirty years, it was hard and I feel I gave 100% focus, although if I would have given 150% focus my grades would have been straight A’s I feel. I am still a work in progress, because I have five more semesters to go and I will obtain my goals one at a time by working at giving 150% focus.

Enrolling in College Composition was a big step toward completing the only part of college I feared. This emotion is brought on by the previous check the block educators I dealt with growing up who didn’t want to educate. Instead, they just wanted to finish the semester completing only the minimum requirements to push students through. As for this course, it’s a fast-paced eight weeks that is instructed with clear and concise instructions with the appropriate educational references required to complete the course work. The course was in the Blackboard format, with assistance to students when needed. Also providing students with formats and examples that assist them with completing the assignments to meet their conventional goal.

“A good school teaches you resilience - that ability to bounce back” - Kate Reardon. This was my first year having an english class in HBU and I was quite surprised. I expected the class to be very tough with at least a million essy’s,but it wasn’t at all that I saw it to be. English class was more of an averaged pace class with a good amount of time to get assignments done. My expectations for english class included a lot of stress and essays almost everyday, but to my surprise the class was a little more lax.

The topic of my English 1101 class this semester was “American Murder” which, to me, is as interesting as an English class gets. The only downside was its integration of forcing students to participate in WOVEN communication. In fact, the whole goal of the course was to turn students into better multimodal communicators; the secondary goal was to enhance our knowledge on murder in America. I hated that, I wanted to learn more about murder in America, not do stuff that triggered my social anxiety. What I absolutely hated the most, however, was the fact that this class was actually useful. Using multimodal communication actually makes sense and could just be that difference between a “meh” performance and an incredibly amazing one. That being said, I do struggle with some of the concepts of multimodal communication. I struggle with all of them but I do struggle with one way more than I struggle with the others because social settings give me anxiety. Given this information, it wouldn’t surprise you to know, that I, Alessandria Holley, am a pretty bad oral communicator.

In my essay there wasn’t a drastic changed throughout my essay. There are small changes that needed to be done. Some of the changes I made were spelling errors and really word choice. I sometimes forget how to spell certain words at times, so I had to made those changes. My word choice is good, but it could be improved and stronger. I had try to use stronger word choice throughout the essay to make it flow better and sound proper. I may have to look up AP words that would help improve my vocabulary and make my essay stronger. The reason I had chosen the adversity paper is because it’s one of the few high scores that I had obtained in the class. Since writing essays are not my strong point, this paper is one of the few that I receive

Hello, I’m Emma Cortina, I go by she, and you can call me Emma. I am very excited to be in your class this year and hope to learn as much as I can about reading and writing.

I truly have enjoyed taking English 22 class. This semester, I have experienced difficulties, challenges, and most importantly, the feeling of accomplishment after completing an assignment or an essay. During high school, I disliked English and really didn’t take any of the information in. This is the first time that I have enjoyed a composition class. I have always found it to be a struggle to write essays but professor Porcha Dela Fuente have taught me to dig deep into the papers that are being written. Her patience and helpfulness has pushed me to excel in my English skills.

Your class has taught me many things. You taught us the correct way to annotate a text and how to be more clear while trying to say/ write something. Also, you have taught me how to write an article reflection. Additionally, I have learned many different facts about Shakespeare when we did the research on him. I have also been taught many new words that I would have never heard from the WODs. Also, you taught me not to use be-verbs to make sentences more interesting. Furthermore, You told me the difference of paraphrasing and explaining something. Making connections to the text or article is another thing that you have taught me this year. I also know how to cite text and provide a concise summary of a text.
