Reflections on Colin Kaepernick Colin Kaepernick, former San Francisco 49ers football player, took the nation by storm when he decided to take a kneel during the national anthem in a 2016 pre-season game. Some people may have felt that it was disrespectful that he didn’t acknowledge the National Anthem but, he had a powerful message behind why he decided not to participate in honoring the American flag. Having a platform as big as the NFL allowed Kaepernick to have a voice for persons of color, even if he would be ridiculed about his decision. The following paragraphs will discuss how his brave statement has impacted him and its affects on the world. Neville, Tymes, and Utsey (2009), read “…one can see the psychic struggle to both achieve social progress in ways that do not prove too antagonistic to the broader White community while simultaneously staying true to a legacy of African History and culture…”. This quote directly applies to how people of color have to wear two faces: one for the world to see and the other around family, friends, etc. One may assume that Kaepernick felt the exact same way when chose to take that stand. Imagine being in that head space a few minutes before the National Anthem started. It must have been hard to decide if one wants to take a stand for persons of color and the oppression that is still going on today with police
