Reflection Of The Literature Class

At the beginning of this novel, we were introduced to Sarah Nickerson, a Harvard graduate, with a good paying job as the vice president of Human Resource at Berkeley Consulting, three kids, and a sweet husband. However, she was career-driven and dedicated to her job to afford to live in Welmont and to be able to take care of the family as her husband is trying to survive the second round of lay off at his work. However I noticed that this job put a lot of stress and strain on her and her family, as she didn’t get to spend a lot of times with her kids or husband. In the morning on Friday, she would get her kids ready for school but her and her husband would rock, paper, scissor on who would take the kid to school and when she didn’t have to, she was pretty happy. The day of the accident was when she didn’t have to take her kids. As she was trying to make a phone call, she crashed and ended up in the hospital for eight days. I like how this book go into details of her life before the accident and then illustrates her life afterward.

Critic Roland Barthes has said, “Literature is the question minus the answer.” Choose a novel or play and, or considering Barthes’ observation, write an essay in which you analyze a central question the work raises and the extent to which it offers any answers. Explain how the author’s treatment of this question affects your understanding of the work as a whole.

From grammar jeopardy in English class to researching Túpac Amaru in Spanish, all of my classes at BHMS are extremely alluring and fun, but my Humanities class to stand out within all of my great classes. The Humanities class in BHMS is the perfect combination of hands-on education, creativity and Fun. Mixing those three things is a tough thing to do, but my teacher Launa Schweizer does it every time. She make every single class so fun and engaging, whether it is going outside and polling people or making an imaginary journey to Oregon. Humanities is by far my favorite class and always manages to interest me no matter what.

I learned a lot in this class during the semester. The first project was our learning narrative, it was not what I was expecting from a writing class. I expected we would be writing a many formal essays in MLA format with lots of sources and research. The first essay being a creative writing project was unexpected. At first writing a narrative from my personal experience was difficult for me. I had not written anything besides formal essays since high school. Writing something that was creative and expressive was an adjustment. After a few days of writing I began to really enjoy my learning narrative. I liked being able to express myself and my own experiences and share them with others.

For this final literature project I have decided to write a course reflection. I have choose three readings from this semester to write about and why I like them. The first reading I am going to write about is Washington Irving, Rip Van Winkle. The second reading is Edgar Allan Poe, The Masque of the Red Death. The last story is Harriet Jacobs, from Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. All of these stuck out at me and will remain with me for a long time.

Ernest Hemingway is noted as being one of the greatest authors in American history. His style of writing and the topics he chose were appealing to readers of his time and his works are widely read to this day. Ernest was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Creek, Illinois to Clarence and Grace Hemingway. As a young boy, he spent most of his time outdoors and enjoyed staying at his family's cabin in Michigan. It was here that he discovered his passion for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. During high school, Hemingway wrote for the sports section of his school's newspaper and continued his newspaper career immediately after graduating when he went to work for the Kansas City Star. English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.

When I entered your classroom on the first day of school this year, I was confident that what I had learned in previous years was sufficient enough to call myself an experienced and competent writer. However, I discovered throughout the semester that this confidence hindered my ability to improve in the beginning. The first few days of analyzing essays and literary works was something I had never experienced before, opening up my eyes to a side of literature and the English language that I previously did not pay any attention to. After we finished writing our very first in-class essay, I was extremely surprised to see that the score I earned was a 6. But when I look back on that very first essay, I am even more surprised to see what I could improve using the knowledge and strategies I learned in AP Junior English.

When taking this class, I got to learn how to think critically, ask the right questions and formulate my thoughts into coherent paragraphs. The presentations gave me a lot of information; the assignments helped me remember and better process what I learned. And finally, the discussions gave me the opportunity to express my ideas, as well as an insight into what my classmates

It was my first day in Mr. Howard’s AP Literature Class. There were approximately thirty of us sitting in rows of six in a dim classroom. Low background music was playing and light projectors beamed colorful bright lights that traveled dizzying paths across the room. I sat beside and chatted with my close friend Andrea about our concerns regarding our new English teacher. Based on our English department’s poor reputation, we were afraid that Mr. Howard would contribute to that conception by being another poor instructor. However, many of our friends, who had him as a teacher during middle school, stated that he was an exceptional teacher. This English class has been an amazing learning experience for me. It made me grow as a writer, I am now more convinced when I write and can express myself more effectively, so readers understand what it is exactly that they’re reading about. Although I didn’t get off to a great a start in this course and if I had to do it over again, there are definitely some things that I could have done better. Interacting with my peers on the discussion board, made me learn a few things about working with others and the Smart thinking was helpful as well. Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order.
