Reflection of the three personal goals
The first goal that I had in preparation for this research course was to learn as much as I possibly could! I feel that I have reached this goal and then some! I definitely have a greater understanding of the different types of research studies that are done quantitative versus qualitative, what the Institutional Review Board (IRB) stands for. That only names a few of the important topics on research that I have learned while learning in this course. All of which have helped help me gain a better understanding of the process to conduct nursing research. One of the important pieces that I learned was gaining a better understanding of the process that is established to ensure the right documents are submitted and followed through. These are all important pieces that are set up to guarantee the information that is collected from the patients stays confidential (different than HIPPA). Additionally, I wanted to learn the whys behind why we do research. I feel after the weekly discussions as well as the different articles that we had to research I met this goal as well, but definitely will continue to investigate and continue to ask questions and ensure that we are using evidence based practice concepts to support our research practices. Nursing research “encourages all levels of nursing personnel to find answers to clinical questions and incorporate the findings into clinical practice (p43 article) My third and final goal was to
The aim of the nursing profession is to investigate and to assess any issue that may impact patient life. This can be done by the research. The nursing research study has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice, thus rendering it an essential component of the educational process. The purpose of a nursing research study is to collect the information where the result may identify a solution to a problem. As a result, the research study would play a vital role in the nursing profession. Basically, there are two main types of research studies: quantitative and qualitative, that a research is able to conduct a research study. Each of this type has their own view in
Gerrish, K. Lathlean, J. (2015). The research process in nursing. West Sussex: John Wiley & Sons. p263.
Target population was pregnant women less than fourteen weeks gestation that had a sedentary lifestyle. The researcher used two data collection instruments to complete this study. The first is The Cornell Protocol Fitness Tool that measured cardiovascular fitness level and peak oxygen consumption. The second data collection instrument used was The Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire assessed energy expenditure and daily physical activity. Candidates were excluded if they had chronic hypertension, gestational diabetes, and any medical condition that will prohibit daily exercise, communication problems, or recommendation of primary care provider not to participate (Yeo 2009).
Nursing is a career which I believe that needs to come from the heart and I have at all times appreciated with respect. My aim in doing my education in nursing was because I always wanted to achieve an extended and successful profession in the health and medical field. I suppose the responsibilities of a nurse can be very demanding and frantic in certain instances but nothing can be equal to the joy and satisfaction it brings. There are many specialized areas in the field of nursing but I was particular interested in the mental health field. I have had a chance to experience mental healths nursing during one of my placements .There are a few goals which I would like to achieve within the next
Evidence-based practice is relied on by professional nurses in order for them to make informed decisions as well as apply critical thinking skills directly to the patient care they provide. The research process allows the nurse to ask and answer questions systematically to ensure the decisions they make are based on sound science. Research provides the evidence needed for nurses to practice based off scientific evidence rather than by tradition (Houser, 2013). Nursing research is fundamental to the practice and is the central principle that defines the nursing profession.
According to Gale and Schaffer (2009) explains that nursing comprises autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, well or sick and in all settings. Nurses promote health, prevent illnesses and care for the sick and disabled people. Other roles of nurses include promotion of a safe environment, participation in shaping health policies, research and system management (Gale & Schaffer, 2009). Research is important in nursing because it validates and refines exiting knowledge and generates new knowledge. According to Newhouse (2007) nursing research helps build an evidence-based practice for nursing. EBP in turn contributes evidence to the effective care of patients. Studies have supported the conclusion that patient outcomes are substantially improved when health care is based on evidence from well-defined studies versus tradition or clinical expertise and opinions alone. The ultimate goal of nursing is therefore an evidence-based practice that promotes quality, cost effective outcomes for patients, families, healthcare providers and the healthcare system (Closson, 2005; Salbach, Jaglal, Korner-Bitensky, Rappolt & Davis, 2007). EBP evolves from the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient needs and values (Aarons, Wells, Zagursky, Fettes & Palinkas,
It has been my long time desire to care for those in need since I was a little girl. This desire led me in to the career choice of nursing. My personal nursing attitude that is centered on compassion and service makes me feel most fulfilled while I?m serving and caring for those in need. My nursing philosophy focuses on empowering each patient through the delivery of holistic nursing care, while combining it
After graduating from Blackhawk Technical College my nursing career will begin at St. Mary's Janesville Hospital as a surgical/pediatric nurse. I am excited to begin this journey within an organization I have been a part of since before the doors opened in January of 2012. St. Mary's Janesville is partnered with several colleges offering ADN to BSN degrees. My future goals include enrolling and completing an ADN to BSN degree program by December of 2020. In addition to earning my BSN by 2020, my goals also include obtaining my ACLS and PALS certificates within four months of hire.
Before I started my graduate nursing degree, I can honestly say that I didn't realize the importance of nurses being involved in research in order to understand research methods. I can clearly see now that I will not fully understand the process and methods involved in research unless I participate in it myself. That being said, I am not comfortable in initiating and working on research or EBP projects at this point. I sincerely hope that at the conclusion of this course, I will have a better understanding or nursing research and how to conduct it. I am continuing to see its importance in nursing and want to be able to promote research effectively as a graduate prepared
Knowing nursing research is quite important in building your knowledge by gathering significant information that you will implement in clinical practice
I am a nursing student. I have a great passion for caring for others. My short term goals are to graduate Riverland Community College with my Associate's Degree in Nursing this December. I plan to work very hard and prepare to take my nursing licensure exam at the beginning of next year to become licensed as a registered nurse. I will then transfer to Metropolitan State University to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
As a graduated nurse with no experience on the field, evidence-based practice is something that I want to learn and apply throughout my future nursing career. This course have increased my knowledge about nursing research and the different aspects of the research process by the use of postings in discussion forums , the appropriate APA style for in-text citations and references, and researching for evidence to support my post. The assignment that I enjoyed the most was the group assignment about level of evidence. The interview to the health care provider helped me to connect with my future coworker at John Peter Smith hospital and I was able to experiment the environment and
Nursing research has been a part of nursing practice for many years, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research; it is essential in guiding nursing practice. Many nurses have a baseline understanding of research in general, but it is important for the researcher to understand their own values and beliefs when determining the type of research they will be performing. By understanding the differences between epistemology, methodology, and methods, the researcher can confidently conduct a valid research project.
The purpose of nurses reading and critiquing research about the nursing field is to gain a better understanding of the research topic and to evaluate if this research will be effective in every day practice. Nursing is always evolving and changing, so it is important to keep up to date research on certain methods and practices used in the healthcare field.
Furthering nursing research is essential, as it forms the basis for evidence-based practice in healthcare today. With this in mind, developing the skills to critically appraise research articles is of the utmost importance in order to determine the relevance of research findings for clinical practice. As I pursue a doctorate degree in nursing practice, I am reminded of the necessity of these skills. Thus, in the following paragraphs, I will reflect on the research goals I developed at the beginning of the Critique and Design of Nursing Research course, and will discuss my views on the role of the graduate nurse in regard to
