As of next year I will be a senior in AP Literature and Composition. Originally I wanted to take this class in my Junior year but felt intimidated by the work load, as well as other reasons. However, this year I look forward to taking this class and I am willing to work hard for it. I have not taken any AP classes prior to this, so I wanted to take some for my senior year. Due to scheduling issues, I had to take regular english for my junior year, and I felt unsatisfied with the slow pace of the class as well as not being able to go more indepth with the english work. By taking AP Literature and Composition, I will be able to challenge myself on my writing skills, and hopefully build upon them.
I am prepared to be a diligent student,
I am really unsure about having to take an English composition course because I am not a writer and the field I am studying for is not one that I would have to write for. I am going to put my all into completing this course to the best of my ability. My plan is to be able to strike a good balance between this class and others that are more in line with my field of study. My hope is that I do not get an apathetic attitude towards the course as the curriculum goes on.
In Freshman Composition I learned what metacognition means, and how it applies to academic writing. Next I learned about textual evidence and backing up your opinions with research. *I expect this class to help develop my writing skills, as well as find my voice in writing, all together I expect this class to be challenging but rewarding. Therefore I have set a few goals for myself, my first goal is to step out of my comfort zone and research topics I have never heard of before. My second goal is to not second-guess myself on my writing topics and/or choices. Furthermore I expect great things to come from this
Coming into junior year and taking an AP English class, I am extremely nervous. Outside of English, I am taking two other AP classes, so I am worried about the work load that I will be responsible for throughout the year. I have heard from my older sister that AP English is a fun, great class. Throughout my eleven years of school, I have always been one to challenge myself and I fell that by taking AP English I will be challenging myself once again. I am looking forward to a good year this year.
One of the challenges high school seniors face is to choose whether to further their education or not. Many students choose to go on to college to get degrees or certificates, but many do not. College certainly is not for everyone. College is important though for people who want to obtain jobs that require getting a degree. I am a person who wants to get a career that requires a quality college education. I will experience many challenges and obstacles throughout my college education. I know taking a Composition and Rhetoric class will be one of these challenges. I am taking English 1101 because I have to in order to get my degree, because I want to get ahead, and because I expect to develop better writing and communication skills.
Advanced Placement classes were something that I have considered and that I continue to consider. A challenge and a college credit is why I would like to take this AP English course. In addition, I would like to take this AP class to ameliorate my weaknesses in grammar and vocabulary. I believe that this class could also benefit in my career, learning harder vocabulary so I can sound more intelligent when I speak. However, considering how nerve racking it is for me to be joining an AP class since the workload maybe overkill, I wish for this class to build up important writing skills.
I enrolled in College Composition 102 because this course was pre-requisite for my Nursing degree. I also look forward to learning and becoming a better academic writer.
Taking an AP English class may sound like a hassle especially if after school activities or jobs take up the majority of the time. It is worth taking a class that will bring rewards in the future. When I was in a normal English class, I felt bored out of my mind. It was not because of the teacher or because of my peers, it was about what I was being taught. Everything was being taught at such a slow pace that it was becoming dull.
To start off, I would like to say that I am interesting in taking AP English Literature and Composition for a variety of reasons. I believe it would be a great class to get me ready for collage, which would be the main reason. I love to read and I want to become better at analyzing my reading and learn strategies to get better at that skill. I want to continue to grow in the areas of analyzing literature and to transcend in that area of expertise. Also, not to mention, it would look good on collage applications. Lastly, I know that there is a lot of reading in the class and I want to explore more novels and read more of the olden classics.
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.
I learned that you are not only writing for your own benefit, your writing for your classmates, teachers and peers as well. It helps you gain common knowledge that you may not have known otherwise, as well as teaching us research skills that we will need later in life due to the rise is technology use. I have learned that research is a part of life and you will need it throughout college. Writing has helped me understand things I was unable to comprehend before, and gives me a feeling of capability. As Frederick Douglas, an African American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman, once wrote, “Thus, after a long, tedious effort for years, I finally succeeded in learning how to write” (McQuade and Atwan). At the beginning of the semester, I would have never guessed that I would finish this course on a positive note; however, I finished, and it was not as difficult as I thought it would
Alves. She mentioned how well I had done on the AP test in her usual Texan boisterous tone that could only be Mrs. Alves, and I folded into myself to admit that I never checked my AP scores because it gave me too much anxiety. Mrs. Alves is the teacher that brought me out of my shell and challenged my writing more than anyone before, so naturally I was pleased to learn that I had earned a 5! Mrs. Alves was a perfect vessel to deliver the news and I felt so happy to make her proud since she made such a positive impression and lasting impact on my high school experience. Going into AP 12 now, I grew a little weary as I saw AP 11 students drop like flies to go into honors this year, but was easily quelled at Mrs. Alves saying to me “I knew you were able to do this” and “your spirit has gotten so much lighter since the beginning of last year.” My goals for AP Lit are to write essays passionately and effectively, and to mature as a writer. My only concern for AP Lit is the difference between the approaches to writing and analyzing between last year and this year; I got very comfortable the way I was writing last year and it may be a little shell-shocking at the beginning. Change is good! Change is challenging! Challenging myself is good! Positive
After being in AP US History for almost a full semester now, I have seen myself developing so many new skills and talents that I didn't even know I had or was capable of accomplishing. For instance, I have always been a terrible writer and have struggled with it throughout my whole life. This class has really pushed me to go out of my comfort zone and write more essays than any of my other classes have done in the past. My English class that I am currently taking right now, AP English Language & Composition, has become easier and less stressful as the year has progressed. I know that this is a result of being in APUSH because I have discovered how to write essays more clearly and quickly and no longer stress about them as much as I used to. The essays we do in English are now a breeze and only take me a few minutes to complete compared to what normally would have taken me a couple of hours to complete. Becoming a faster and better writer has helped me with all of my schooling, not just English and History, and I know that the more I practice with writing, the easier it will become.
AP English Language and Composition is the most challenging class I had ever taken, and I’m grateful that I had you as my teacher. Before your class, English was never a challenge for me, and since I was subpar in other subjects, such as science and math, I viewed English as my only redeeming quality as a student. After your class, I realized that English was not “my” subject either. While I struggled with meeting the standards, I appreciate your patience and willingness to stay after school to review my essays with me. After going through my essays with you, I felt a renewed resolve to improve. Thank you for also being understanding. Thinking about group projects triggers war flashbacks that I do not want to relive. However, I’m grateful that
Of all the writing experience I gained through an AP heavy course load in high school, I look towards the experience I gained in one class more than anything else when it comes to the development of my reading and writing skills as a student and learner. This class was known locally in my high school as Honors Issues in Religions, taught by Mr. Burnett. The reason this class has held such an impact on me is because we were able to develop both reading and writing in a variety of ways, whether it was doing the nightly textbook reading, writing 4 essays in 90 minutes in what is known as a test in the class, the 15 page minimum research paper due at the end of the year, or even the book review done on a book of the student’s choice. All of these different aspects were able to help myself improve my skills as both a reader and writer.
My AP experience this year had been a hard but worthwhile journey. I remember last year I had three AP classes and it was a lot of work. This year I had 6 AP test but I felt I did better than last year as it was easier. I had improved my speed in learning and I am able to manage my time much better. This is likely because I did not have AP united state history or AP chemistry this year, as those two were one of the classes that had the most workload. Without those two, even having more AP classes was less work.
