Reflection On Cultural Identity In The Classroom

I have sent to Lincoln International High School to observe and report about the students life and how the classrooms sittings reflect on their cultural identities. First and foremost, 98% of the students population in school is mostly immigrant students. Majority of the students come from countries such as Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, DRC Congo, Mexico and other countries in South America. It was a great honor to learn more about how the students social life is reflected and valued in the American school systems. I have attended a regular math classroom since I’m pursuing a career in math education. There was a lot of things that did reflect the students cultural identities. In the classroom, there was different images that represented famous mathematician, pictures that represented different cultural identities and furthermore,I was surprised to see that there was different flags representing different nations. It has come to my attention that the teacher was respectful to students national origin and he has valued what it means be from a particular country. Furthermore, in the teacher's desk I have seen two books, one that is written in Somali and another one written in Spanish. I have ask the teacher if the books belong to students but that was not the case it belonged to the teacher himself. I did have communication on what inspired him to learn these different languages. Indeed, the teachers’ native language was English and one of the things that inspired him
