According to my scores, I am someone who is more likely to lead with an emphasis on relationship, rather than on task. The result of this assessment surprised me, because I tend to be a perfectionist in regards to deliverables. However, I have never enjoyed delegating to tasks to others because of the control factor. My preference is to complete a task alone, because it is difficult to deal with personalities and politics within a group. If I am forced to work with a group, I am much more likely to make suggestions to my group members, rather than telling them what to do. This behavior stems from my desire to work in harmonious groups, which may explain my inclination to lead by relationship. Further, I believe that followers are humans, who have a life beyond accomplishing group tasks. For example, when I was queen of the DRYL, one of the princesses, Cheyenne, relinquished her title due to school and cheerleading pressures. Although some members of the DRYL thought I should convince Cheyenne to stay on as a princess, I did not want one of my followers to be stressed out. Even though the other princesses and I could have used Cheyenne’s help for fundraisers, I put her individual needs above the group. How could you change your style to shift the emphasis you give to task and relationships? What would that require? Considering that the Lebow College of Business emphasizes group work to prepare students for the business environment, I think that I am well versed in why the majority of my group projects fail. However, there are the rare occurrences where all group members participate equally, and that the project becomes a piece of quality work. Even though I believe that some college students slack in these types of group situations, I cannot label myself as completely blameless. Often times, I think that I am too “nice” to some of these group members by fostering peace within the group. However, increasing some of my task behaviors, such as defining role responsibilities and organizing due dates for deliverables, may increase the productivity of the group. When a group refuses to share leadership or defer it to one individual, there is no clear set of quality standards for the project. As a result, I must
I believe our group work is going well. We haven’t had many meetings concerning bringing all the work together, but people have been working had individually as noted in the annotated bibliography. One complaint is that in the agreement we said that the annotated bibliography would be completed by the Sunday before the due date, when in actuality two members did not add their work to the group until the day the assignment was due. However, this is minor in the larger scheme since it was completed and submitted on time. We have made plans to come together next week to work on the project together and how and where everyone’s contribution will be placed. Overall I don’t have much to complain about as communication and work ethic are good. I
To further understand Belbin Team Role Theory, I, together with four students formed a team and simulated as being authorized by the Songjiang Government Bureau to investigate into the current situation and the prospect of the higher education industry in Songjiang District. Through unremitting team efforts, we successfully demonstrated our findings and recommended several ideas via a formal presentation. Reviewing the three-months-long process of cooperation, I really found this experience of learning meaningful and fruitful. This reflective essay is a conclusion of my sympathetic introspection of the
As a college student, I don’t enjoy group work. I am the student that dominates the group and does almost all of the work, establishing group times to talk about what needs to be done, and making sure that attendance is mandatory
In this paper I will describe and analyze my experience working in a group situation, writing a paper on the movie 12 Angry Men. I will address therapeutic communication techniques used in our group situation. I will address any conflicts that arose in our group. Utilizing Tuckman’s group process theory, I will also address the effectiveness of our group process.

Group work is an important part of work. In many jobs, group work is a function that is required. Therefore it’s important to develop the skills and practices at University. In this essay I critically analyse my own experiences against the literature.
Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). Christine’s group from the Case Study the Forgotten Group Member is in between the Storming and Norming Stages. The Storming Stage “is dealing with tensions and defining group tasks,” while the Norming Stage is dealing with high emotionality and tension among the group members” (John & Wiley pg. 166). Christine and her group could have had better
Group work has been a cornerstone of the social work profession and requires a variety of facilitator skills and awareness of group processes. The SSLDTM Group Program for People with Difficulties in Social Situations (Socialwork1914, 2017) provides an excellent example of a psycho-educational group co-facilitated by two female social workers, Jane and Karen. After viewing the 6th session of this 8-week program, I began to understand how the concepts of group formation/development, interpersonal dynamics, and leadership styles contribute to successful group work outcomes.
In this essay I am going to reflect on my experience working as part of a team and the preparation on an oral presentation I had to do in class with people from different courses, as part of the Foundations for Practice in Health and Social Care module. Reflection is educational and is used as a means of self-knowledge and to develop using a process of feeling and learning by thinking about what happened and what could have been done differently. (Rolfe, 2011, p.8-12) I will be using the Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle to do this. In this model there are 6 different stages to look at to help structure reflection, the description of the event, your feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan. There is more than one model
In my undergraduate work, almost all of my classes that were directly related to my major required at the least one group project. In the beginning this was not something I was very fond of mostly because I had some bad experiences when it came to working with others on projects. Usually it was the problem of people not pulling their own weight, and doing their parts to help with the tasks. When it came time to have the assignment complete it was even harder to give a grade to those people. I did not want to be the guy who caused someone to throw someone under the bus. However, after I thought about it, I did want to be that guy because in the real world on a work project if there was someone who did not pull their weight in the job projects would not be successful. So, when it came time for grades, I was always honest, and usually if a person did not do their part I told it how it was.
1- What role did you play in team meetings or discussions (online or face-to-face)? What ideas or. work did you contribute? Consider your verbal (vocal or written tone, etc.) and nonverbal communication (body language, facial expressions, etc).
Teamwork can be complex and challenging given task and interpersonal issues, level of group motivation and expected performance standards. The concrete experience spoken about in this reflection piece is in reference to the effectiveness of myself as a group member and the group, working to write a report outlining the organisation and structure of Volkswagen. Dennison (2009) applies Kolb’s learning cycle (1981, 1984) which suggests that learning moves through a continuous cycle, between having an experience, and then reflecting on that action. This cycle has been developed from Lewin’s (1951) model for experiential learning. Reflection termed by Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) ‘is a forum of response to the learner to experience’(p. 18). On reflection, the early set group dynamics was a defining factor in the experience, and how the team conducted themselves throughout the task. Meyerson, Wick and Kramer (1996) note that ‘such rapidly converging groups require methods for developing “swift trust”’ (p. 8), which can explain why initial group dynamics are so important. I took on multiple team roles, including group leader, which could be translated into the team not performing collectively on a high level, however, I could view this as a personal ineffectiveness of my leadership style.
Overall, our group dynamic was good. We were able to collaborate and critique openly, without any real arguing or tension. Everyone’s opinions were heard and when there were disagreements they were resolved by civil discussion. The only conflicts that we experienced, which were fairly minor, were due to lack of communication or the presence of miscommunications, which were easily resolved with further conversations and clarifications. The workload during the pre-production phase of our film was most evenly distributed. We assigned duties during class and we all did our fair share. Originally our workload during production was broken down into our shooting schedule, which organized who would film what and when. However, we did not stick to the schedule as much as I wish we had, especially since I spent a lot of time creating the schedule. Instead we divided the workload based on our original sequences, which Liam outlined and emailed to us, with each of us filming an equal share of the planned shots. As our film evolved, we maintained this workload distribution, in which we all filmed even shares of certain portions of the films, even as we restructured the film into three acts instead of episodes. Each of us also took on a specific focus in the production as well. Liam and I collected interviews, while Brielle, picked up the exterior shots that became a larger focus of our film. Brielle and Liam, also picked up specific shots of students working, while I focused on getting
“Group work is a form of voluntary association of members benefiting from cooperative learning that enhances the total output of the activity than when done individually”.
