Here comes the end of this semester, and I really want to reflect on my overall performance through this course and set goals for future. In the past three months, I feel like I have accomplished a lot not only as a student but also as a speaker. From all the speeches I did this semester including Grab Bag Speech, My Path Interview, Career Path Presentation, Rhetorical Analysis Activity, Pitch Speech, Story Podcasts, and two impromptu speeches, I learned a lot of speaking skills and showed a big progress. In addition, Professor Khalil taught me a very important thing which is knowing people well, which allows me to be more confident and relaxed while doing a speech. I think I improved a lot from the beginning to the end, and I am pleased with my overall delivery in the IDEA Speech. However, there is still more space for me to improve, so I am going to do a self-critique based on my performance not only in the IDEA Speech but also throughout the course. First of all, I would like to analyze my results from the PRCA survey. My overall score is 46, which represents a low communication apprehension. Compared to the result of my first survey which was 56, I thought I improved a lot. My anxiety and nervous reduced a lot in the IDEA Speech, and I felt very confidence while speaking. I think these improvements show that I prepared well, know my audience well, and paid attention to the presentation skills. I know that I spent a long time preparing each speech before the real
Out of all the speeches I presented this semester, I considered this speech to be the best one I ever presented in this class. I chose a topic that integrated perfectly in a college setting as well as delivered it with information that was supported with both visual and oral aides. I also kept a steady pace and did not go over my time constraints, allowing the audience to understand the points I was trying to make throughout my entire speech. As for the competencies, I had strengths in all the
If any class I’m taking requires a speech that must be presented in front of others, I immediately dread the due date for that assignment. While the student, whose turn is before mine, is reciting his or her speech, I cannot help but feel my heart race and the palms of my hands begin to sweat. No matter how many times I take a deep breath and tell myself to relax, I still feel anxious. My anxiety towards public speaking has been happening to me since as long as I can remember. I was eager to take the PRPSA questionnaire to determine where on the scale my level of anxiety towards public speaking falls. To my expectations, my results for the questionnaire, a 98, was right where I figured it would be. I found my score to be accurate because yes,
Writing was never a known weakness of mine. However, I could never confidently call it a strength. Throughout the course of this semester, my writing style has evolved and I have rid my writing of many habitual mistakes. I have learned to appreciate writing much more, and enjoy the moments where my mind meets words on a paper. Creativity has always been one of my strong suits, but through this course I catered my creativity to compose a variety of essays and speeches. Likewise, public speaking is something that I did not struggle with in the past, yet the structure of the class required a video speeches which was fairly new to me. All in all, I have been able to identify and modify gaps in my composition of writing and speech as a result of this course.
In the informative speech, I didn’t many things that were admired and distracting during the speech, and I hope to improve on those distracting interrupting acts on my next speech. During the speech, I did some items that were a little distracting through the speech. As I watched my speech I noticed I had some awkward pauses, bad transitions, some um’s, and a little stuttering throughout the speech. If you look at the speech I tend to stutter which is a little distracting. Talking about the festival Diwali I talk about Rangoli and its colored pattern I stutter and forget what I am explaining. Another thing I could improve on is my transitions when hearing the speech, the transitions are a little rough and not as smooth. During the transition when I switch from talking about the celebrations to the language I say, “with all these celebrations it tends to bring many religions and languages together” doesn’t really make sense and could be spoken a little smoother. Stuttering is also a part of the speech I did during the speech which distracting. Throughout the speech, I stutter during different parts and one of those parts being when I am talking about the different traditions when eating Indian food. I say, “some of the traditions when people eat in India are well we all we eat on our hands,” which is a little annoying. During the speech, I also said um’s during the speech. When citing my source on languages I said some ums, repeating the citation from the notecard. During the speech I had a little tough time with stuttering at moments, saying some um’s, bad transitions, and some pauses in the future I tend to improve it for the next speech.
This paper will discuss mine self-evaluation and do into detail about my first speech. My first speech takes place in front of my class and I have to tell a story of an experience that has happened to me. Telling a speech was a new experience for me and I embrace the challenge. A speech can have an impact on a person life and the audience can also relate a topic that is being presented. I will explore and go into the details of ethos, pathos and logos of my speech for my personal assessment.
Secondly, I think I need to improve on my transition. This is important, because it helps tie my speech together. Thirdly, I need to use more positive visualization. Before starting my speech, instead of thinking "I'm going to be terrible out there" I need to imagine myself getting tons of laughs while presenting with the
This class aims to address public speaking and I definitely feel more confident when speaking in front of audiences, especially since I now know the #1 rule of public speaking - KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. I learned about topics in writing and speaking that I did not even know existed even though i saw and heard them everyday. Rhetorical Devices such as Anaphora and Chiasmus are perfect examples of this. Incorporating story into speaking and writing is something that is crucial and I really realized this throughout the semester. This helped me improve my speaking and writing abilities. Even though I despised waking up early for this class, I definitely feel like I gained vast knowledge on speaking and writing. I learned the importance of giving readers a roadmap for them to follow. I noticed a big difference which was also reflected in my grade from my informative speech to my persuasive speech. I was definitely more clear and confident by my second speech. I learned how to make eye contact with my audience while speaking. This class helped me gain valuable insight into my topic - Poverty In India. I found that there was so much more to my topic than just plain facts. In terms of the learning outcomes for this class, I feel i managed to achieve the vast majority of
Overall the process leading up to the speech was a great experience. Even though our group was close this speech was able to help us learn more about each other. This speech was able to help us understand each other and grow as a group. We learned how to work with each other and adjust work to fit everyone’s schedule. This was a great opportunity for us to show responsibility, teamwork, and leadership. We are satisfied with the grade we got on the speech because we put a lot of time into
However, I recall that the minute I began the first few lines of my real performance, my heart pounded fast and my voice wavered. I have heard that this anxiety is quite usual, especially when one is a novice speaker. However, I managed to stabilize after a second or so, and was able to gain control of my emotions. One of my peers also observed my gesture of putting my hands in my pockets quite often during the presentation. My friend, Joshua, noticed I slurred a couple of my words in my poem. Although these mistakes were completely sub-conscious, it is important for me to correct them as they could be potential sources of distraction for the audience and can steal their attention away from the actual performance. Some of my friends advised me to memorize my poem by thinking about some analogies, but I refused to do so as I wanted to actually know the symbolic meaning of my poem. I believe that the key to delivering a good performance is practice, confidence and knowledge of matter, not performing from pure memorization! My opinion on spoken word this year has still not changed, and I still believe it is essential to include into this year's curriculum. I have reflected on my weaknesses, and am ready to perform better in the near
I have shown huge improvements on delivering speeches. This process helped me to understand different kinds of speech and their expectations. The only way I can think of improving is that to get myself be confortable and to do more preparations. Therefore, the mistakes I made in this will help me to improve on the next
For the process and informative speeches you will view the video of your presentation and critique yourself. Your responses to the questions below will be submitted to the D2L dropbox as a MS Word file by the date designated on the syllabus for each speech. You will use the same questions for your peer critique. When answering questions, answer in complete sentence form, check spelling/grammar, and use punctuation.
I will discuss my performance and progress based on two areas of writing in the class. The two areas I will reflect on are my essay writing and following the MEAL plan in my writing. I believe that I improved with my essays over the semester with this class. My first couple of essays were horrible, but my last few essays turned out to be great because I finally got help and more feedback from others. Here is a screenshot of my first rhetorical analysis essay. It was about if everyone should go to college. I did a poor job on this because I just summarized what the author did. Now the
After preparing for this speech, I believe that it was a speech that was developed. The speech was very appropriate for the audience and occasion. This speech was appropriate because I discussed the reasons why higher education should receive higher funds for school. I created a clear specific purpose that I could accomplish in the allotted time. I believe I did a great job with the timing because the time required was six to seven minutes and I finished in six minutes and nineteen seconds. I believe the speech was well organized because I have used Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. This sequence showed me how to organize my speech into a sequential order. I have fulfilled the major functions of the speech introduction. I have tried my best to create a great opening to get the audience’s attention. I
Initially, when I first registered to enroll for this online Speech class, I did not know what to expect. I thought that we would only meet in order to present the required speeches and then I thought that we would have a virtual classroom to give speeches were we were all online at once. Now I know that both of my guesses were wrong. For our speeches, we either record them online and invite classmates as audience members to watch, or have a live audience of family and/or friends that record you giving your speech in your living room or somewhere similar. When I found out that these were the ways I would be giving my speeches, I was so surprised. When I am speaking in front of a live audience in a classroom, I get so nervous, so I thought that this method of giving presentations might be less anxious for me.
During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better
