Hey Mr. B,
Thanks for being my first writing instructor when I enrolled into college. Yes, there were bumps here and there for me but after your encouragment and advices on how to revise my writing, I can tell that I have improved from day one. Now I will continue to improve my writing and use what I learned in this course to better improve in my next course. Once again, Thank You Mr.
I have been a student at San Jose States University for second years, English 1A was my first regular English class, and over the course of my stay I have grown and learned a lot. As Hospitality major, I do not know whether need my writing skills for future job, but I know the great experience in English 1A class would help me to improve all my writing weakness.
At the start of this course, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had a goal for myself to improve and learn skills that would make writing less daunting for me. I have learned so many things about my writing that I didn’t think much about before. Another goal I had was to break the cookie-cutter mold that was set upon me throughout high school. During the process of revision, I discovered many things about myself as a writer and techniques that have been effective for me in the writing process.
This course offers numerous opportunities to improve our writing. In this class, I not only enhanced the skills I already had, but also learned new writing concepts. Before I took this class, I knew that my writing is poor, and I have always wanted to improve it; however, I did not know how and what aspects of writing to improve. So, I came into this class with the ambition to improve my writing, and I have accomplished my goal although there is still room for improvement. At this point of this course, I have learned the elements that successful writing is composed of, and I am now able to categorize the various techniques that can work together to define strong
Over the course of this semester, my confidence in writing has improved greatly. In high school, I didn’t really know how to write effectively. I wasn’t really sure what was considered to be “good writing” until I took AP* English. However, even while I was taking this “Advanced Placement” class, I was still trying to figure out how to really create “good writing”. I feel as if this had something to do with the fact that I never really had to work with the rules of grammar intensively. After taking this course, however, I now have a much better understanding of how to correctly use proper grammar. I also improved on using transitional phrases in my writing. I have implemented my understanding of proper grammar and transitional phrases in both my writing inside and outside of this class as a result.
I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.
Hello Brevin, I have to agree with your statement about the intimidating task of writing based courses. I, too, felt that I would excel in the writing-based course due to experience with creating narratives for reports and writing city ordinances for legal review. I have found that the experience of a writing-based course is focused on forcing one to learn.
Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned so much about writing. I used to think writing was my best skill in terms of school, but after taking this course, I realized I have a lot to learn still. In high school English was always my highest grade because of my writing, my writing in my SAT scores was always the highest, and last semester in ENGL 1301, I got a high A in the course. But this course has challenged me as a writer to think outside of the box and be more academically smarter in terms of writing. The journals have helped me write about things that we like more than the other assignments because it gives us more freedom and flexibility about what we can write about. These journals are being used as a tool as practice
In my opinion my writing ability before I arrived in this course at the University of Dubuque was fair, it wasn’t outstanding, but it wasn’t horrible. My biggest obstacles I faced in this course was coming up with a good topic to write about. Coming up with a topic you care about and can expand on your ideas can be a challenge. When learning to write in a more cohesive manner, I think the chapters we took notes on were very beneficial to improving my writing. It showed me the proper way to write a thesis and how to compose my papers. I also believe practicing our writing by journaling helped me learn to write what is going through my mind and it helped me to just learn to get my thoughts and ideas down on paper.
Working a full-time job, raising children, and attending college are all not easy tasks, as many would agree. As a parent, I have difficulties in managing and prioritizing my time. Hence, I am forced to sacrifice many things, including my social life and spending quality time with my family. This semester I had to cope with many personal issues, including focusing on my English 1100 class. Amidst all that I am very grateful to my instructor McCaughey. Not only has he been super supportive but also definitely helped me grow as a writer. With his style of teaching and as well as a motivator, I tackled my writing issues. Through this class, I gained confidence and was able to learn about how to develop my ideas in a writing process .I learned
“What is the item that holds the most value for you?” That was the first topic for the essay that I have to write for my writing class. I value a lot of things that people give me, but the item that I value the most is the necklace my mom gave me. It was a necklace that has two pendant on it: a cross and my birthstone. I love this necklace so much, so I decided to write about it and why I value it is so important to me. I wrote my essay and thought that it would be great and I will definitely get a high grade on it. However, the grade that I got was lower than what I expected and I was so upset with myself because I had a great expectation about it. I decided to talk to my teacher and asked why did he give me a low grade. He told
Coming into this class I did not know what to expect. Also, I did not know I would learn so much about myself by just reading deeper into literature. This class has definitely opened my eyes to a new style of reading. I wouldn't say I focus on every word when reading books now, but I would say I think deeper about the meaning of a few lines. I do this because of the specific words that are used and the order that they are placed in. I’ve definitely taken what we have learned it class about reading in a different manner and applied it to my everyday reading.
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class, particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Some of my strength include being extremely organized and tidy. I am able to interact with my fellow piers in a respectful manner and I am a team player. In order to succeed in today’s society, you must be willing to work not by yourself, but, with a group. Working as a group would ensure that you, and everybody else in your team are successful in completing the task that was given to you by a superior power. I have a couple of weaknesses that are constantly affecting who I am as a person. I am the type of person that does not like arguments. I always try to distance myself from any conflict that arises. One of the reason why I who I am I because I am un-able to process the conflict that is occurring to me quickly enough for me to take any sort of action. I must be given certain time for me to be able to process what just occurred in front of me.
After completing the writing course, I came to realize not only did I need this course, but students here at Walden should enroll in this class. There are professional writers whom do not always write correctly; and there is room for improvement (Walden Writing Center, 2015). At the onset of this course I identified a couple of writing areas I could use help in; however, as the course went on, I also found helpful tips which enabled me to further my academic writing. Consequently, each week I learned different writing techniques and implement them into my assignments. After taking the graduate writing course, I am confident my academic writing will meet the standards for Walden’s dissertation.
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
