Palo Verde Unified School District held three Local Control Accountability Plan meetings on March 20, 22 and 23. The purpose of the community wide meeting opened a portal for parents, students and the school’s superintendent to discuss plans and actions for the next school year. Giving an overview of student achievement or the lack thereof in previous years, Lois Shaffer, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, along with Superintendent Charles Bush created a cooperative ambience to compile a mission and goals’ list to better student achievement, student engagement, parental involvement and course access. As reported by Shaffer in the school’s report, the district is seeing chronic problems in suspension, low mathematical scores, supplemented by reading levels, lower than they should be. By having this meeting, Bush said this was just another chance for the district to build a working relationship with the community. “We can only do that by listening to people and really trying to hear what they have to say. When I came here last August, I was told that one of biggest issues was parent involvement and that the community didn't really value education. The conversations I have had with people over the last few months has shown me the exact opposite, and our LCAP meetings have proven that this community cares deeply about education. The district just needs to start listening and empowering the community and parents to be involved in a meaningful way. The first time, I spoke to PVVT, I said that I wanted to improve communication and get people talking to one another and working together. The LCAP meetings have shown me that people want to work together and be involved, and that if you ask, people will tell you what they think. It really could not have gone
The Wilson School District Board of Directors meets on the first and third Monday of each month to guide the operations of the district through six strategic vision planks. These planks seek to: improve upon or expand Wilson’s portfolio, grow Wilson regionally and nationally, increase organizational agility and capacity, engage in creative development of new and existing infrastructure, create a flatter organizational structure, and control for fiscal accountability. The following is a summary of the meeting which occurred on September 18, 2017, along with observations and conclusions from the perspective of a future district administrator.
Walker-Davidson announced, “I am thrilled to serve the district and the community in this new capacity. For the past four years I have served as the ABC district middle school principal and I feel that has provided me with a great foundation for moving forward. I am excited to work with the administrative team and staff in order to continue the academic growth within our school district. It is my personal goal to increase the graduation rate, test scores, and the availability of career readiness programs, as well as obtaining and training expert staff members.” Dr. Walker-Davidson went on to explain her mission for the school district to be: success driven, education focused, and student centered. I plan on carrying out this mission with expert educators, dedicated staff members, and community involvement.”
Once the team’s vision had been established, we became very honest about our personal and professional strengths and our target areas of growth. From this conversation, the team was able to clearly define the focus and responsibilities of the PLC Leader and individual team members. The meeting was successful and everyone is excited about working together. Our vision will remain in the forefront of our meetings, reminding us to always provide a climate in our classrooms that fosters thoughtful and respectful consideration of all viewpoints.
The principal conducted several meetings with stakeholders during the summer months to collect data and feedback to assess needs of the school. Our professional learning community team and principal participated in district training throughout the year over the summer.
In addition, the past several years have seen recent changes to administration at both schools. Three years ago the long-time middle school principal retired and a new principal was hired from outside the district. This principal was surprised at the lack of collaboration between the schools and would like there to be more. Last spring, the long-time principal of the high school passed away after a battle with cancer that brought the entire community together. The high school’s assistant principal, who was acting principal during the principal’s medical leave, was hired as the principal. He, too, seems ready to build better collaboration between the schools. Now seems to be a great time to begin the collaboration that is needed between the two schools.

These goals show our commitment to provide the highest possible standards of education for all students in our district and to ensure the fair and equitable treatment of all members of our community. We consider understanding individual differences in each student and teacher so that we can adopt the appropriate programs of study for them of the utmost importance.

As the director of Largo Learning Academy my first priority is the safety and well-being of our children. With this in mind, there will be a few changes made for the upcoming fall

At Havering, the common shared value between the Local Authority and the Schools allows us to plan long term and short term goals that benefits students and staff. By communicating with the schools we can understand what their needs are and how collaborating can mutually benefit both parties and can live up to or exceed their expectations.
The 2016-2017 school year has been one with mixed emotions. Public education has been faced with its biggest challenges and most tumultuous times. It is by God’s grace as an educational leader that we have been able to stay true to ourselves and remain on course in fulfilling our vision to better serve and meet the needs of our most important asset, the students in our respective district.
I acted as the audience here and just sat back to observe. I noticed that there weren’t many people in attendance. Then once the meeting started, it was very fast paced and difficult for any “random” to walk in and understand. This meeting really is only meant for people who have a part in this. I learned that school board meetings are a whole lot more boring than the movies make them seem. The construction program did seem to gain the additional funds they requested. The public are permitted to speak and ask questions, however the window of time is quite small and unless one has investment in a matter, you might not have too much to say
The Superintendent has an obligation to create and evaluate a comprehensive, rigorous, and coherent curricular and instructional district program, even in the current financial situation. The curriculum development and instructional delivery theories being used should be appropriate and up-to-date. Teacher performance must still be assessed. And district technology and information systems should be used to support and monitor student learning. In this case, it is easy to document the new technology put into place with the new referendum. The issue now is with the wiring. Efforts must be made to see what can be done immediately as well as in the long-run.
