Lisa later went on to discuss how her social class affected her social class inside of the classroom with both her teachers and her peers. Lisa considered herself to be talkative and diverse in her friends. She tended to pick on those that were the same but also was able to relate to the struggles that many of them had since they were of the same social class. Her friend group consisted of those of the same race and interests as her. She liked to refer to her as a “social butterfly” and was friends with people on the high end of social class and those that were at the lower end. Her friends that were at the higher end of the social class had an issue talking about certain people never having the latest trends in phones or new backpacks or clothing for school. She responded to them by telling the story of those who could not afford the to keep up with the new trend. She said “Not everyone is aware of the struggles that others go through on a regular basis just to get a new pair of shoes or the newest laptop. I tend to associate myself with people who are similar in their spending and the way they were raised, but those that I were friends with who did not understand that would get a talk from me letting them know not to judge or jump to conclusions.” Lisa also associated herself with people of different races and was not one to exclude someone due to their skin tone. She recalls this one incident where one of her friends was being picked on because he was wearing dirty clothing and had rips and holes in his shoes. Lisa decided to sit back and do nothing even though it was her friends making fun of him. Looking back Lisa would have said something to stick up for him. He had a hard home life where money was tight and buying new clothing and shoes was the last of his family's concerns.
Since I come from a middle class family and associate with being caucasian, Lisa and I’s educational experience almost complete opposites. After deep reflection on my schooling experience, I can say that I had many different experiences compared to that of Lisa’s. When it came time to go back to school, shopping was high on the priority list. If my teacher had a list of what was needed for class my family and I were buying
There is much debate about the issue of social class in the United States. There are arguments about whether social classes are distinctly separate or fluid, dependent upon one’s community or society as a whole, and if they are subjective or objective (Hughes and Jenkins). However, despite the debate surrounding social classes, it is still important to try to define them and analyze their effects, as they are such an important part of our identity and our opportunities in society. Although our society has tried to appear as though we have no classes, and it is becoming harder to tell what class someone is in by material goods, classes do still exist today (Scott and Leonhardt). The trend has been to divide the U.S. into four major
Social class is a “tag” to define your status in a community. One of the main requirements you must have to be in the Upper class, is to have wealth and power. That is basically it, and obviously the absence of those characteristics could mean you are in a Middle or even in the Lower class. Sports are an activity that people do for pleasure that requires physical activity and sometimes has rules for the players to follow in order to play the game. It is most commonly played outdoors. It can improve your cardio, health, and physical condition. For example, it can prevent things like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer or even mental illnesses like depression.
America is a complex and diverse web of individuals marked by social stratification, a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy (Macionis, 2011, p.204). The film People Like Us: Social Class in America discusses the class system, social stratification based on both birth and individual achievement, which the American people use to define others (Macionis, 2011, p.206). It explores the many variables that contribute to the determination of a person’s class; such as, ancestry, education, and money. Ancestry will be a main focus because it has such a strong influence on the class system of today. The film provided an informative and entertaining

In this course, we have learned about different social classes and how they developed over time. In fact, the idea of social classes has been around before what we know it as to today. The concept has not changed. The “higher” classes usually have land, money, and jewels. The “lower” classes are broke, servants, and no valuable possessions. Prior to this course, I only knew of the upper class, middle class, and lower class. In today’s society, the separation between classes is not as bad as it use to be. School is an example of this. I grew up in Cobb County, Smyrna- Vinings area and I went to school with people who parents are CEOs of companies, successful entrepreneurs or even music artist. I would consider my family middle class but we did have students who were also lower class families. Some higher-class families enroll their children in private school. Private schools charges tuition whereas public schools are free of cost. The upbringing up children can determine their social status in schools. In this essay, I will discuss “cliques” and their differences in high schools.
America is seen as the land of opportunity across the world, but many people wonder if it is true. The truth is America does have opportunities and with dedication anything is possible though the opportunities are limited. Usually limited for those who belong to a lower social class. The main reason opportunities are limited are because of America’s social inequality. The social class of America is separated into multiple groups that struggle with each other due to the inequality of power and wealth on the daily basis.
This essay will explore the notion of social class and whether it is still relevant within today’s society. The Oxford Dictionary defines social class as ‘a division of a society based on social and economic status’ and is measurable in terms of stratification and inequality. Stratification suggests people are ranked hierarchically according to their attributes such as income, wealth, power, age, gender and status, whereas, inequality explains the difference between people in terms of their abilities and rewards
During my research, I have found that depending on where you look there are a variety of Social Classes in the United States. The most obvious and probably the best known are the six social classes primarily used in the United States today. Below, I have compiled some facts that help describe and support each class.
One of the experiences from this class that has increased my multicultural competence within socioeconomic status was attending Richard Wolff’s event. He received his PhD from Yale University in Economics and explained why we as Americans hold on to our capitalistic economy even though it has collapsed twice before and is known for being unstable. I realized that I have also never before been presented alternative ways of economics. The capitalist economy, for me, was a given, and I was glad to be made aware of other solutions and ways other people have used other forms of economy and the ways they were benefited by their way of doing organizing society.
According to most, even though American Dream is possible to attain, it is significantly more difficult to achieve than it is made out to be. It relies as much on luck as it does on hard work, if not more. Though there are occasions where people move up and down the social ladder, certain qualities such as race, social class, and social status can determine the opportunities that allow for social mobility.
Social class has developed over the centuries into an obstacle we cannot ignore. I believe that social class exists and proves itself in stereotypes as well as in our government. Our world divides social class into three sections: upper, middle, and lower class. However, many also think that there could be multiple classes. The problems that we face with social class display themselves in the lack of opportunities for lower class children, the abuse of power by ghettoizing, and the addiction of money instead of longing for Jesus. We need to awaken to the world around us that daily struggles with the uncompromising chaos of their circumstances.
As long as it has been in existence, society has always been fractured into social classes, the very rich and the very poor. I see within our society the chasm growing by the year. The proletariat, boxed into cramped houses, while the bourgeoisie reside in mansions that jut up towards the sky touching the clouds. The rich, who control mostly everything in todays age, capitalize on those less fortunate than themselves and bask in the ignorance of the lower class. It is painful for myself to see the common worker, the average person, being taken advantage of and not even knowing his rights against such things.
This essay will be discussing the extent to which social class and poverty affects health and illness. Firstly, what is social class? Each person’s perception of social class can be different; is social class defined by a person’s accent, the area they live in, or something as simple as their income? Project Britain describes social class as “The grouping of people by occupations and lifestyle”. (Cress, 2014). To find social class Sociologists group people according to common factors, they compare people and various criteria can be conveniently used to place people in social groups or classes. Next we ask the question what determines a person’s health, the NHS defines health as “Physical and mental, it is the absence of disease”. (NHS 2017).
