Reflection On Transcendentalism

"Re-examine all that you have been told... dismiss that which insults your soul", Walt Whitman. The Transcendentalist Challenge featured activities that would challenge the student to move outside of their comfort zones and change their view of the outside world by incorporating Transcendentalist themes. I was forced outside of my comfort zone. My view of the world and our everyday lives have changed because of the Transcendentalist Challenge. I now believe that we should try our best to live minimally and appreciate what luxuries we have in life. We must examine literature and take in what advice it has for us. We must not rely on technology the way we do and learn to experience the world for ourselves.
The first task I completed was making a list of the luxuries and necessities in my life. Deciding where to place certain items was very challenging. I was forced to look deeper into myself. The luxuries in my life heavily outweighed the necessities. I realized that I did not necessarily need these items but would like to have them. The luxuries in my life increase the quality of my life. The necessities in my life are simple things that even human needs to survive, food, water, basic clothing, shelter. At the bottom of this list was my cell phone. Even though I know it should be placed in luxuries, I could not bear put it in that column. I rely on my phone for most things. It contains all of my important information, pictures, and my way of communication among my friends
