Introduction As a student radiographer I have come across many learning situations that required me to put into practice aspects of the mandatory training that I completed within my first few weeks at university. I have chosen to discuss manual handling as my topic as I feel it is something that is encountered daily in the job role of a radiographer. The everyday positioning of patients and moving them, either physically around on a trolley or moving them from the trolley to the x-ray bed highlights the importance of good manual handling practice. Poor moving and handling practice can injure the patient or a staff member, this can lead to a loss of dignity and cause discomfort (HSE, 2017) The process of written reflection is often based upon reflective models. The selection of which reflective model that is used is often based upon clinical need and a personal preference (Leeds Beckett University, 2015). For my written reflective assignment I have chosen to use the Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as shown in figure 1, as it allows me to follow a structure with which I am comfortable enabling me to review retrospective events, consider feelings and formulate an action plan (Jasper, 2013). figure 1 (slideteam.net, 2017) Description On my first week of placement I was working alongside another male member of staff when a bariatric female patient arrived on a hospital bed with a suspected lumbar spine fracture. The situation required that the patient be transferred to
I have decided to use the Gibbs (1998) Reflective cycle for this essay, this framework guides you through a cycle of questions in order to provide guidance and structure when reflecting on an event or situation. The Gibbs cycle
The assignment critically discusses a reflective practice with regards to a clinical placement I undertook. In the following critical incident that I encountered I will utilize the Gibbs Reflective Model. Gibbs reflective model is fairly straightforward and encourage a clear description of the situation. Analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, analysis to make sense of the experience, conclusion and action plan where other options are considered and reflection upon experience to examine what you would do if the situation arose again (Gibbs 1998). Unlike many other models (with the exception of Boud) Gibbs model takes in to account the realm of feelings and emotions, which played a part in a particular event. My rationale for
For the purpose of this essay, I have selected Gibbs (1988) Reflective Learning Cycle to reflect on an aspect of individual professional practice, which requires development in preparation for my role as a Registered Nurse. Gibbs (1988) Model of Reflection provides a clear description of a situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, conclusion, and action plan to make sense of the experience to examine what you would do if the situation happens again.
What is a clinical exemplar? It is a story based on a real patient’s situation and a RN’s practice in clinical setting. Having a clinical experience it is an opportunity for any student nurse not only practicing skills and using theoretical knowledge, but also learning by doing and reflecting on experiences during the placement (Jones, 2013). This experience comes through exploring, developing, questioning, learning and reflecting at the early stage of personal and professional development. Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle is one of the models of reflective writing that will be used in this clinical exemplar.
For the purpose of my Reflective essay. I will use Gibbs Reflective Cycle 1988 to help me analysis my feelings and describe a situation that happened within my role as a Health care worker within a hospital ward setting. It will help me to gain an evaluation of the experience that I gained though a situation if it was to happen again.
Injury in the healthcare workplace may vary in different degrees of seriousness—from a minor slip to a stabbing needle that has been contaminated. Such
Heavy lifting causes an accident in the workplace such as back pain and injury. The health and safety Executive (2004) reported over 15000 manual handling accident in the health care division and, highest number were associated with client handling. Forty per cent illness non-attendance in the NHS is due to manual handling injuries. The Royal college of Nursing (2003) established a code of practice for handling that specifies that two health care staff should lift no more than 50.8kg.
Within different disciplines, what is understood by reflective practice varies considerably (Fook et al, 2006). Despite this, some agreement has been achieved. In general, reflective practice is understood as the process of learning through and from experience towards gaining new insights of self and/or practice (Boud et al 1985;
For my service learning project I worked in Mrs. Evelyn Costa's first grade class at Meadowlane Elementary. Meadowlane is located at 4280 W 8th Avenue in Hialeah, Florida and was constructed in 1957. There are one thousand one hundred and seventy seven students enrolled at Meadowlane Elementary school. Meadowlane has fifty three classrooms and fourteen portables and there are one hundred and seventy nine students per grade level. The school was built on nine acres of land. The student population of meadowlane Elementary is comprised of 97% Hispanic, 2% White, and 1% Asian.
A sidewalk protects one from the dangers of the road when you need to go somewhere. It keeps you going towards the destination and helps to give one’s paths to follow. Even though it does influence one's direction, it still gives options. Some options might have danger like crossing the street but it will continue to have a plan for you.
Stubborn is how my Mom would describe my personality. My Dad, on the other hand, always said I was tenacious. He believed our greatest strength can be found by understanding our weaknesses. As a child, he explained that being stubborn is a negative attribute. According to him, people do not like when they meet an inflexible brick wall. Tenacity, on the other hand, can be a powerful tool. It shows people you are determined and persistent. He wanted me to understand that a strength can sometimes be a weakness made to work in our favor. I have always remembered this advice and have used tenacity to achieve many of my life goals.
Our civilizations relies upon people to develop morals and resilience through family, however, what happens when you grow up in an abusive family? Sure, you develop resilience quickly, unfortunately, you may build your moral foundation over a sinkhole. In addition to family dynamics, by age eleven, I survived being hung by a Mexican gang, three dog attacks and a house fire which left both legs covered in second degree burns. Fortunately, at age twelve, I ran away and a couple discovered me sleeping in their garage. Compassionately, they took me in and allowed me to live in a travel trailer on their property.
I have never been very passionate about writing and as a result, I have never really thought about the true meaning of writing. In high school, I just accepted the fact that I was not good at writing in comparison to my peers. I just assumed that good writing meant that there were no grammar or spelling errors, which is a common misconception most high school students have. Before reading Writing About Writing by Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs, my views on writing were very limited. One of the first ideas that jumped out at me as I was reading was the statement, “Writing is not just something that you do, but it is something that people study”(Wardle and Downs 7). The idea that writing is something we can actually learn more about, had never crossed my mind. As our views and perspectives on writing grow and expand, we can better understand the purpose of writing and know what good writing means.
The Medieval Era was a time dominated by belief. People lived with such great superstition and fear of God. Many people were focused not on their lives her on earth, but rather their life after death. During the Renaissance people became more humanistic and focused more on their lives in the moment rather than their afterlife. We can see these changes of Ideas by studying the works of Saint Anselm of Canterbury, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Thomas a Kempis, and Caesarius of Heisterbach from the Medieval Era and compare it to the works of Marsilio Ficino, Leonardo Da Vinci, Niccolo Machiavelli, and Desiderius Erasmus of the Renaissance period we can see a very particular change in worldviews.
When I was around seven, I learned a valuable lesson of listening to your parents. Even to this day my parents would bring up that time to warm us not to do anything dumb. Whenever I am near the water, it reminds me of the stupid game that my brother and I used to do.
