Reflection Paper: Mercy & Wisdom When a person asks me to describe God, there are always two words that come to mind. God is merciful and God is wise. God showed mankind mercy by sending His only Son to die on the cross. The Lord shows us His wisdom in Bible, allowing us to see His knowledge and reason. Each day mankind should work towards being merciful and wise in order to show we are created in the image of God. Part One: Mercy Theological Definition The definition of the word mercy is, “kind or forgiving treatment of someone who could be treated harshly” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Mercy is shown throughout the world and throughout history. Mercy has been given to murders who should deserve worse for the acts they have committed. It is not just of this world. God showed His people mercy for the sin mankind has created. He could have shown His power by harshly destroying us all, but instead He mercifully loves us, giving mankind a chance when we do not deserve one. Biblical Foundation The word mercy appears “some 341 times in the Bible” (Morris, n.d.). During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (NIV). Jesus is teaching us that if we are merciful, we will be blessed by our Lord showing us mercy as well. Even Mary tells us, “His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation” (Luke 1:50, NIV). If we fear God by not sinning then, once again, His mercy will be extended to us.
