Reflection #3: Depression
Depression is a category of mental illness that most often appears during the late teens. Often, a psychiatrist or psychologist is necessary to diagnose a person with depression. This is often done using the DSM V. According to this reference, depression is characterized by feelings of sadness and feelings of emptiness, which often leads to a myriad of physical problems. Physical symptoms of depression include unintentional weight loss or gain, sleeping too much or too little, and loss of energy (What is Depression). One’s emotional state has a large effect on the body, many of which can be observed in the physiological symptoms of depression. Without the want to function, individuals suffering from this illness

Suicide is the 9th leading cause of death for Floridians, and is the 3rd leading cause of death for Floridians ages 15-24 (Florida Vital Statistics Reports). Unfortunately, depression is the main clinical cause of suicide, with almost 30% of these individuals showing signs of depression during the months preceding their death. To improve these devastating statistics, Florida has implemented a statewide suicide prevention strategy. The program’s major goals are to decrease the incidence of suicide in Florida by raising awareness, promoting open discussion about depression and suicidal talks, and expand accessibility to substance abuse and mental health treatment (Florida Suicide Prevention Project). My hopes are that Florida will be able to improve statewide access to mental health resources, especially for teenagers and young adults who make up much of suicide rates.
Furthermore, it has been found that socioeconomic status is a major social determinant of health. Those at a lower socioeconomic status are more likely to present with the symptoms of depression. This may be in part due to the added daily stress experienced by someone of a lower class in comparison to upper class individuals, as explained by the social causation hypothesis. Individuals from lower economic status often must worry about how to provide food for their family, how they are going to pay the bills, and have very little time to worry about their health, especially mental health
Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration. Depression can be long-lasting or recurrent, substantially impairing an individual’s ability to function at work or school or cope with daily
Depression is a common and serious mood disorder. It’s more than just feeling down or sad in response to life’s struggles and setbacks, depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can increase the risk of many health problems, and can even be serious enough to lead to suicide. The disease must be given more attention and treated as a global public health priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 7.6 percent of people over the age of 12 have depression in any 2-week period. Depression is also the second most common cause of disability worldwide after back pain, according to a review of research.
Low socioeconomic status is often associated with higher prevalence of depression. Depressive disorders which develop in socioeconomically tight situations have lower rates of remission and higher risks of becoming chronic, hence increasing prevalence (Bramesfeld, Platt & Schwartz, 2006). Mental health problems like depression and anxiety have a higher prevalence in
Depression is mental illnesses characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, despair and worthlessness that interfere with daily functioning and personal relationships. It is an illness caused by an imbalance of the chemicals in the brain. It affects about 19 million people and cost billions in any given year (Ford-Martin). Some of the symptoms of depression are having a hard time focusing, constant crying, and loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary everyday activities, sleep problems, problems with eating and weight (gain or loss). Depression strikes all age groups, and often goes unrecognized or inadequately treated.
Green et al., (2015) also state that socio-economic factors, such as income, crime, social support network and unemployment levels. Considerable amounts of individuals are known to live an unequal life, as their social class may be different due to age and unemployment, this may be interlinked to poverty and social class. According to Naidoo J, Will J (2016) one of the main social determinants of health is unemployment, this can link to mental health issues, which includes depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance and also physical health, which includes developing cardiovascular diseases. This may also link to living with not having a stable income, as this may link to dietary diseases if the family cannot afford to eat because they are unemployed.
Depression is defined as a mood disorder that interferes with how a person is able to perform day-to-day activities. “Depression is characterized by a depressed or sad mood, diminished interest in activities which used to be pleasurable, weight gain or loss, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue, inappropriate guilt, difficulties concentrating, as well as recurrent thoughts of death.”(CDC, Depression) Depression, also known as a “Major Depressive Disorder”, usually affects individuals between the ages of

Depression is a serious illness that is often not taken serious enough.
What is depression? Depression is an illness that can take over a person’s life---it can take their happiness and their will to live. This illness can effect adults, teenagers, and even kids. “Depression is an equal opportunity disorder---- it can affect anyone of any group, any background, any race, any gender, and any age. It is the great leveler of all groups and can take the greatest and the smallest of us all and reduce us to the pain and nothingness that is depression (Nydegger 1)”. Depression is an emotion most people may feel they have experienced, but little do they know it’s just the basic emotions we feel. It is important to identify the symptoms of depression, the types of depression, who can get them and how they manifest, in
Socioeconomic status is a major determinate of health even more than race or gender. (Umberson 150) For example, when the middle class families have to work two jobs and living in a community that not safe would decrease the risk of illness. The biological reaction is a stress and this is happening “when we feel threatened or do not have control in our lives” ( 24) When individual have chronical stress all the time as the one in the people in the poor communities, the high risk of illness would be dangerous. “The accumulation of stressors or the
“It’s more than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply ‘snap out of it’” (Mayo Clinic Staff 1). One of the most common mental disorders in the United States is Major Depression. It typically ends up with significant impairments that can interfere with one’s daily activities (“Major Depression” 1). Depression is a mental disorder that drastically can change the affected person’s outlook on life and how they handle the world around them. Depression rates have consistently increased worldwide, but, luckily, there are methods to help with the symptoms. This disorder has been made more well known over the years, leading to an increase in preventative measures. The following paper will discuss the rising rates,
Studies that evaluate universal school-based programs, have been known to provide effectiveness in determining proper treatments (Tomyn, Tyszkiewicz, Richardson, and Colla, 2016). Up to 50% of all depression cases had signs in their adolescence. (Kessler et al.,2007 as cited in Tomyn et al., 2016) Depression is a problem world-wide. In many cases people are not treated for depression until adulthood making it more difficult (Gladstone and Beardslee 2009). The purpose of universal interventions is to gain knowledge to strengthen protective factors and reduce risk factors (Tomyn et. al.,2016). In this study, they are trying to measure how the program will positively or negatively affect adolescents. As well as to see the effectiveness of the program for adolescents already experiencing symptoms of depression (Tomyn et al.,2016).
Have you ever wondered what really causes depression? Or how people are even depressed and not just sad? The reason I chose this topic is because I have depression. Not only that but I only know a limited amount of this disorder, and also considering the fact that depression runs along side both of my mom’s and dad’s side of the family. My curiosity grows as I wonder, what does this really mean? Why was i diagnosed with depression? Is depression permanent or can it be cured? How? Where does depression come from? On this journey as i take you into the world of mental health knowledge, you will also get to know a little bit about depression, and maybe answer some of your questions.
Stress and situational depression are seen as just a part of life. As people grow and experience life they encounter events that trigger stress and signs of depression. These events can include changes in the professional world, death, and academics. Changes in mood such as these are temporary, and are pretty common. Aside from these normal occurrences actual depression, or clinical depression, is seen in 1 in 10 Americans. Clinical depression is a mental illness that that can prohibit normal daily functioning. In this assignment I will examine two forms of clinical depression, unipolar, and bipolar depression.
Depression have become a major problem in our society today. People who haven’t experience depression will not understand how it feel and what it can do to a person. Many people also doesn’t understand what depression is, or how it can related to suicidal ideation. In fact, studies have documented that the majority of young suicide victims had depression at the time of death and most suicide survivors were diagnosed with symptoms of clinical depression at the time of their attempt (Mojs, Biederman, Głowacka, Strzelecki, Ziemska, Samborski 2015). It can affect anyone, from young adolescents to college students to the elderly people. There are many reasons that can make someone have major depression. Such as financial problems, family problems, social problems, school, work, etc. These stressors in our daily life can cause anxiety which can increase our stress level significantly, which then can lead to depression. A research said that anxiety disorder have a high comorbidity with depression and that anxiety occur prior to the onset of depressive disorders in many individuals (Batterham, Christensen, Calear 2013). People who experience depression must find way to cope with depression and know how to get help in order to prevent suicidal ideation. The people surroundings, friends and family, must also find ways to recognize the symptoms of depression, and show understandings in order to help those suffering. This research project will help people understand more about
